Today is the eighth month’s ninth day, which mean this site celebrates 1989, the greatest year in video game history*!

This site even has a sub-section dedicated to the year for reasons you’ll see mentioned there. Then again, you’ll probably figure out why once you see all the stuff I’m celebrating (and there’s still a lot left out). Everything in this update is linked to that magical year when many of this site’s favorite games, series, consoles and more debuted. Unfortunately, there’s so much stuff that I couldn’t even fit it into 3 screenshots, so, as a first, the sprite preview is a video!

Custom Sprites:
Capcom: Quick Man added to Mega Man section.
– – Final Fight: two new scratch-made Cody sprites!
– – Strider (new separate section): (a new Tom Pooh sprite (and redone colors on the hand-up pose) in the Strider section

Nintendo: Tatanga (Super Mario Land)

Sega: scratch-made E-SWAT’s police ICE armor and enemy unknown/File 96 enemies
– – Golden Axe: resprited Tyris Flare fight stance
– – Shinobi: new scratch-made Pink Dragon and redone Kasumi sprites

Sunsoft: Tuff Turf’s heroes and lady added.

Technos: new standing sprites for Kunio, Riki, Hasebe, Alex and Ryan

Games(other): Prince of Persia (original) added.

DC Comics: the Joker in the 1989 NES Batman stance
Music: new gallery starts with new Chuck D (Public Enemy) sprite and older sprites and sprite edits.
Toys ‘n Toons: Marge, Lisa and Bart Simpson. The Simpsons cartoon started in 1989!
G.I. JOE: Snake-Eyes in his version 3 (1989) outfit
TMNT: Krang (in his standing pose from the 1989 beat ’em up)

Mini-Logos: Prince of Persia (Jordan Mechner), Public Enemy (Music) and the Simpsons (Television) added.

The new custom sprites and mini-logos have been added to the GFX Generators.

My apologies to any fans of 1989 games who were left out, like Mendel Palace/Quinty, Double Dragon 2(NES), Astyanax, Crime City, and dozens more. There are too many good 1989 games to celebrate and many of my older sprites needed to be redone. Let me know about your favorite 1989 games and characters in the comment section!

* – 1989 being the greatest game year is hyperbole mostly for fun, but also designed to drive disagreement-induced hits, but at least this website admits it.

The first anniversary update was all gaming characters, but now it’s time give a few comic and toy license characters some love!

Custom Sprites:
DC Comics: Black Canary (an early version was seen in the site promo videos)
Marvel Comics: a new Wasp sprite. Don’t worry, I’ll make more outfits for her later!
TMNT: Shredder (same pose as the 2013 sprite, but redrawn & resprited to look much better)
G.I.JOE: Snake-Eyes and Scarlett. BTW: an early version of Scarlett’s sprite was in the unannounced new banner displayed only on July 4th this year.

All sprites were added to the aforementioned GFX Generators (the old GroupShot and Vs generators). Wasp’s new sprite has slightly different colors than her 2011-2012 sprites, but I remade all her old palettes, because Jan’s gotta switch things up. Snake-Eyes’ new sprite also has multiple palettes.

Also: that Chun-Li pic I drew last month is now in the prints section of the site’s Shop page!

So we saw video game heroes yesterday and 80s nostalgia today, but things take a turn for the sinister tomorrow with an all-villain update!

Seeing as how it’s Christmas Eve, I thought it’d be a great time for an update with toy sprites!

New sprites of Evil-Lyn, Scarlett, He-Man, Jem, Lion-O, Grunt, and Faker have been added to the Toys and Cartoon and G.I.JOE galleries, along with the GFX Generators (where you’ll see even more palettes for Scarlett and Grunt). I also fixed the sprite of G.I.JOE’s “Flash” Gambello, because he was far too short.

BTW: Steelheart and Cyborg were going to be part of this, repping SilverHawks and Super Powers respectively, but I used them in the Cyber Week updates so the site wouldn’t be going so long without updates. Don’t worry, you won’t have to wait until next Christmas to get more toy-related sprites here…

the Night City Assault beat ’em up Kickstarter only has a few days and is halfway to its goal, so check out the campaign, try out the playable demo and help it out if you can!

Merry Christmas!

Today marks 15 years of this site’s existence on the outskirts of the internet! Most of today’s update centers on sprites that I wanted to redo from scratch, but there’s also a new ScrollBoss character (you’ll see more from her in future updates) and sprites based on the games of late, great Iwata-san.

Custom Sprites
HAL Laboratory: Lolo and Lala (Eggerland series) kick off the new gallery.
Nintendo: Balloon Fighter added.
Sega: a new scratch-made Shiva (Streets of Rage series) sprite added.
DC: Green Lantern Hal Jordan
G.I.JOE: the Baroness
Illmosis Network: The new gallery starts with “V” but my other characters will be added later.

Mini-logos
Nintendo: Balloon Fight

All of those sprites were added to the GFX Generators

I’m still a bit worn out from the past few weeks and the yesterday’s great convention, so I couldn’t write the big, detailed “Thank You” post that I wanted to make yet, but will get that together this week. For now, I’d just like to thank everyone who visits the site. You’re one of the biggest factors that kept me going through that whole time. ScrollBoss has been here since the days when these older games were looked down upon by a lot of people and I’ve tried to let this place be a lighthouse for anyone looking for place to appreciate older action games and pixel art. I still have a lot of new things on the way for this site, so I hope you keep visiting every once in a while!

A new sprite of Flash from G.I.JOE, JL-JLU Wally West, Jay Garrick from the cover of Flash Comics #1 and Trickster with the yellow/orange/blue outfit were added to the G.I.JOE and DC Galleries. A Grandmaster Flash mini-logo was added to the new Music mini-logo gallery. All of these things were added to the GFX Generators, along with a new Superfriends palette for Captain Cold.

G.I.JOE: Retaliation has hit theaters and the early word I’ve heard about it so far is positive. The movie looked far more G.I.JOE-like than the first movie (which wasn’t bad, but mismanaged a few characters) from the get-go, so here’s a small Joe-themed update to celebrate that.

Custom Sprites – Beach-Head, Firefly, Jinx (masked, unmasked and blindfolded), Zartan added to the G.I.JOE page.

Mini-Logos – G.I.JOE ARAH (with tiny tagline under the main logo), The early Japanese ARAH-style logo, Cobra (IDW), Action Force (yellow stencil, and ARAH-looking versions) and Dreadnok (from the 7 pack of figures) added to the G.I.JOE section.

GFX Generators – The following things were updated:

GroupShot: 88×136 Comic now has some of the Marvel G.I.JOE comic set-ups.
Characters: Cobra (IDW logo added), Dreadnoks (Zartan sprite added), Firefly (new, 1 sprite, 3 palettes), G.I.JOE (Beach-head v1 sprite added), Jinx (new, 3 sprites), Snake-Eyes (Marvel logo)

Sprites – G.I.JOE page added with the playable characters from the first NES game and some cinema gifs from the arcade game.

Game Index – Konami’s G.I.JOE arcade game was added to the index.

GFX Generators – I added a few new backgrounds to the 384×224 scene styles and added an early fix for the text feature to prevent certain symbols from gumming up the works.

Character Updates:
SNK – Duck King and Eiji Kisaragi added. Kim Kaphwan gets some KoF 2000 sprites added.
Toys ‘n Toons – Baroness (separate from Cobra character, new sprites & SFA 3 items. Storm Shadow gets a new SFA3 Vs. Name Graphic.
Illmosis – Passion Tanaka (with mini-logo) added.

Rich Girls Laughin' title=

Custom Sprites: Passion Tanaka was added to the PrimeOp gallery page and more Baroness sprites were added to the G.I.JOE page. Speaking of Baroness sprites…

Custom Sprite Downloads – I added the VERY incomplete Baroness sprite set from the long-dead project. I also added some of the sprites from this project to the G.I.JOE Custom Sprite Page and now has her own character slot in the GFX image Generators.

There will be another small update soon to make up for having to rush this one out.

BTW: Elevator Action Deluxe fans, don’t forget that the free DLC Time Gal character is now available along with Sayo-Chan and an extra level.

Here’s the final update for the tenth anniversary year:

Games Index – Black Tiger and Magic Sword (Arcade) were added. Final Fight (Arcade) and Golden Axe (Arcade) were modified.

Sprites – Black Tiger sprites and cinema scenes added.

Custom Sprites – Storm Shadow added to the G.I.JOE page.

Game Logos – Black Dragon, Black Tiger, Magic Sword added.

Mini Logos – The G.I. JOE, Cobra, He-Man and Thundercat mini-logos from last week’s GFX Generator updates from Christmas are now in this gallery.

MugenBoss – There’s no new content but I added List Index pages for Magic Sword and Kirby.

That’s it for 2010’s updates and I hope you liked some of the new stuff and changes that the 10th anniversary brought. I’d like to thank everyone who gave me feedback about it because you helped make things better here. I hope this place brings back memories about games you forgot about, introduced some new games to those who are just getting into the scene or let you know that you weren’t the only fan of that one game your friends scream on you for liking. It’s even more important now that many of these games can be downloaded and played again for just for the first time ever on a console like Konami’s X-Men. The updates in 2011 will be a bit farther apart but I still plan to bring the love of these games to the table and maybe finish one of those long-term projects I’ve been working on in bits and pieces. No promises on that. See you next year!

Surprise, ninjas! I’m playing Santa Claus by leaving a little toy-related update:

Yo Joe!Yo Joe!

It’s Christmas time so I’ve added a Toy and Cartoon character section to the Graphic Generators. It starts off with He-Man from Masters of the Universe, Lion-O from the Thundercats and various G.I.JOEs and Cobras. The Cobras and Joes have been collected into team-based character choices except for Snake-Eyes and Scarlett who get solo slots since they already had minilogos. I disliked the old Storm Shadow sprite so much that I threw a new one together and it appears in the Generators. Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow have optional palettes. There will be an update next week and you’ll see the new things from the generator added to the galleries. There is also a theme based on the early G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero figure card in the Group Maker. I know how crazy it is to have single character themes in the Group Maker but they’re just hanging out there until I have enough themes and fix a few things to create the Avatar maker.

Also: There’s a new sprite pack from the Sailor Moon game by Banpresto. These were ripped by Makron (thank you for giving me permission to host them) and it includes some recognizable characters that didn’t make it into the game. It’s not easy to compile things like that so please give Makron credit if you use them in a fan game.

Also, check out Illmosis to see a quick full-color Christmas pic I drew. It’s not game-related this year but you may like it. I’ll be back next week with another small update to wrap up the 10th Anniversary year.
