Eleven years ago, Halloween fell on a Friday and I made that the theme of the update. Now I’m bringing that energy back in more than just the sprites in this final HorrorThon 2025 update!
Custom Sprites:
– Friday the 13th : Jason Voorhees (walking) and unnamed running counselor.
– Halloween: Michael Myers/The Shape – 1978 top of the stairs pose
– Splatterhouse: Terror Mask boss (giant mask version)
part 1: Remains of the Night
Custom Sprites:
– Mega Man : Skullman
– Castlevania: Dhuron
– Splatterhouse: Splatterhouse 2 Zombie
part 2: Creature Features
Custom Sprites:
– Darkstalkers: Demitri (scratch-made idle pose)
– Castlevania: Medusa
– Horror – Critters: The Crites (just the small ones, for now)
All new custom sprites and mini-logos were added to the fake screenshot makers/image generators that I used to make the group shot at the top of this post. Dhuron is in the “Castlevania skeletons” character slot.
One more day of horror left!
Arcade Quartermaster has the new shrines up, with one for Smash TV and Sky Destroyer!
part 1
– Horror – The Craft: completely redone Nancy Downs hovering (“Surprise”) sprite.
– Marvel Comics: New Scarlet Witch spellcasting pose
– Illmosis/ScrollBoss: An updated version of the new ‘cos-ladies’ Witch sprite I added last week and a second version in a slightly more traditional-looking witch outfit.
Stay tuned, there’ll be a second themed part of this update added later today. The title: On Leather Wings. Pretty sure some comic and cartoon fans can guess at least one of the sprites in that batch!
All new custom sprites were added to the fake screenshot makers/image generators that I used to make the group shot at the top of this post. The cos-lady witches now have more palette separation for their outfits.
Can’t have a HorrorThon without a teaser video, can we?
Over a dozen new static sprites for the site (that’s not even counting alternate versions of them) and more new animation than usual will be in the main video.
The HorrorThon kicks off next week, but here’s a little something to get you
GFX Generator: The new 2025 theater lobby with posters chosen by site visitors has been added to the Screenstyles with multiple background choices: Group, Vs., Marvel vs. Capcom ending, Box 160 x 192 pixels, and Comic 88 pixel. In the Box and Comic settings, I made an extra version that crops to the two movies that got the most votes: Dawn of the Dead and Evil Dead 2.
As a bonus surprise, I’ve put an early version of a new sprite into the “ScrollBoss – Cos-ladies” character: a witch! For now all you can do is change the color of her skin, hair, eyes, and laces while she wears an all-black outfit. She’ll have more extra palette powers (and possibly other surprises) when she’s updated during next week’s HorrorThon! Speaking of which, here’s a taste of the new pixel art that will stalk this site during the marathon:
The HorrorThon will start later this month, but you can help out right now!
Maddie Tenay has a problem… she wants to put up a new set of posters, but can’t decide which to use. So now it’s YOUR turn! Leave a reply with up to four choices out of the posters below and that new line-up will be added to the image generators when the HorrorThon starts later this month. Voting will end on October 15th!
edit October 18, 2025: Thank you to everyone who voted here, on Bluesky, and on Instagram! There will be a small site update next week that adds the new background with the winning posters. Here’s the what won, arranged in the order of votes (click thumbnail below to see a bigger version of this CRT_VIEW filtered preview):
Here’s the breakdown of the top 4:
Dawn of the Dead – votes 9
Evil Dead 2 – votes 8
Halloween, votes 6
Nightmare on Elm votes 5
This background will be added to the Group, Vs., Marvel vs. Capcom ending, Box 160 x 192 pixels, and Comic 88 pixel screenstyles in the generator. Don’t worry, I’ve already set up a cropped version for Box and Comic that focus on the two posters with the most votes: Dawn of the Dead and Evil Dead 2. So tune in next week for a tiny update with that and then get ready for the HorrorThon in the last week of October!
