The horror print (available on the shop page) made a cameo in a Destructoid article about some spooky Nintendo Switch games! Mad thanks to Jonathan Holmes for both buying a print and spreading the word! By the way, if you think the reshading job I did for the Laurie sprite looks like the horror print, well, we’ll have to save that conversation for a later date.

Hardcore Gaming 101 just released a new digest called The Guide to Retro Horror. The book includes material by Rob Strangman, creator of the legendary West Mansion Splatterhouse fan site and artwork by the always-fresh Rusty Shackles.

VGJunk has been on a roll with a wide variety of horror and monster game reviews throughout October, including Splatterhouse 3!

Arcade Quartermaster added new shrines, including Konami’s Haunted Castle, a game that’s considered scary for all the wrong reasons, and, to kick off Karnovember in the right way, the original arcade version of Karnov!

The movie became an instant favorite of mine when I saw it on Shudder long ago and I’m proud to own it on DVD (no VHS version for me… yet). There’s currently a GoFundMe campaign to get a sequel made! Consider helping out and supporting independent filmmaking if you can afford it!

Eddie in the City is having a sale on some cute, horror-themed miniatures, including a few game characters you’ll recognize if you’ve been following the HorrorThon!

This shmuplations.com translation of a 1988 interview with the Splatterhouse arcade team is right on time for the spooky season and full of interesting tidbits about the game’s creation.

Yesterday’s HorrorThon update was a haul of assorted candies, but this update moves with a sinister purpose.

30 years ago, arcades around the world were haunted by the twin horrors of Sega’s Altered Beast and Namco’s Splatterhouse. Both games come from the single-plane branch of the beat ’em up family tree, making this even more fitting for a double feature. Not only that, but these brawlers allow you to become the monster instead of just fighting them.

Altered Beast: Werewolf (new pose), Neff, Aggar (flying head and whole Aggar), Chicken Stinger
Splatterhouse: Rick Taylor (new pose), Jennifer Willis, Evil Cross & Nightmare, Biggy Man, Nobu

All of these things were added to the GFX Generator, even though Aggar is too tall for everything.

In case you haven’t heard, Hardcore Gaming 101 just released a new digest called The Guide to Retro Horror. The book includes material by Rob Strangman, creator of the legendary West Mansion Splatterhouse fan site (seriously, which other writer would you get to talk about Splatterhouse?) and artwork by the always-fresh Rusty Shackles (who ALWAYS gets characters of different tones and official art styles to work just right in his own drawing style).

Once again, VGJunk has been on a roll with a wide variety of horror and monster game reviews throughout October. You’ll find new games to try and others to probably avoid. VGJunk suffers the bad games for the people.

Arcade Quartermaster added new shrines, including Konami’s Haunted Castle, a game that’s considered scary for all the wrong reasons.

The DangerTerrorHorrorThon and Halloween. What could go wrong? Find out tomorrow!

Halloween is here and it’s time to wrap up the HorrorThon!

Sunday is that day of the week when many people go out there to get themselves a little religion. With a site update like this, they may need it.

GFX Generators: A new standalone version of the Darkstalkers 3 (Vampire Savior) Vs. Screen is now ready and only has characters with all necessary elements. All of the standard Darkstalkers are there, but so are over a dozen guest stars. I’ve also made DS3-ish portraits for Splatterhouse’s Rick Taylor and Biggy Man.

While I planned to do a mini-DangerTerrorHorrorThon for this Friday the 13th, I’m a bit too tired from the day job to pull that off this time. Guess I’ll just have to save the horror for October…

Halloween is here and there’s a bonus surprise in the Halloween DangerTerrorHorrorThon wrap-up! Let’s see all the new things that appeared this week…

Custom Sprites:
Capcom: Zombie (Ghosts ‘n Goblins, Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts versions)
Castlevania: Simon Belmont (new CV1 NES stance from last year’s Trevor sprite & improved taunt), Grant Danasty, Carmilla (Rondo of Blood)
– – Konami: Silent Hill Nurse
Namco: Biggy Man (Splatterhouse)
Nintendo: Medusa (classic, big)
Wayforward: Rottytops

DC Comics: Solomon Grundy (uploaded on a Monday)

NES-like 32×16 and 32×3: Altered Beast werewolf

Mini-logos:
Capcom: Ghosts ‘n Goblins
Konami: Silent Hill (movie)
LucasArts: Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Movies: Chucky, Leatherface, Scream, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (thanks to Christopher B. for the Atari 2600 idea)

All fighting size custom sprites and mini-logos have been added to the GFX Generators so you can use them to make your own spooky fake screenshots and pixel graphics!

Don’t forget that I still have that Horror legend vs. screen print in the ScrollBoss Shop for $6 + S&H!

BTW: The Chucky sprite and his portrait in that print come from the same linework, but at different sizes.

I was a bit cryptic in Friday’s update on whether the theme was over. Well, I had one more sprite to make. Ladies, gentlemen and screwheads, meet Ash Williams.

Be sure to check out VGJunk’s Halloween Spooktacular reviews, including today’s review of Capcom’s Vampire Savior! You’ll find a lot of far more obscure games lurking in his Halloween tag, so roll through it to find new picks for your own Halloween game list.

JustinGameDesign made a fun group of 8-bit sprites for the spooky season, with characters from a wide array of sources. He even put them into a nice deviantART gallery so you can see them all in the same spot!

NOW I’m done with the Halloween updates. Happy Halloween!

The DangerTerrorHorrorThon ends with something created by devious minds long ago to end as many lives as possible. That’s right, I’m talking about Boss Rush Mode. Let the slaughter begin!

Custom Sprites:
Castlevania: Carmilla (Rondo of Blood)
Namco: Biggy Man
Nintendo: Medusa (classic, big)
Sega: Zamza (Streets of Rage/Bare Knuckle)
Games (other): the Pumpkin boss from Monster Party. Please don’t pick on him.

Mini-logos:
Konami: Silent Hill (movie)
LucasArts: Zombies Ate My Neighbors

Movies: Chucky, Leatherface, Scream, Texas Chainsaw Massacre

As usual, all new items have been added to the GFX Generators so you can use them to make your own fake screenshots. Also, Leatherface was updated with an Atari 2600 palette, thanks to a suggestion from Christopher B. Thanks!

Well, that’s all for this Halloween’s DangerTerrorHorrorThon!

… or is it?

We’ve been having a lot of fun with the DangerTerrorHorrorThon (see updates 1 and 2), but I’m a bit worn out right now. That means it’s time for a break… a werewolf break.

Custom Sprites: a Castlevania II version of Simon Belmont, and the Castlevania gallery finally gets a graphic tag.

Sprites: new sprites and animated .gifs were added to the Altered Beast gallery.

One special thing I’ve been saving for this update event is a couple of commission sprites I made earlier this year for a special event. Rob “Dire” Strangman (creator of the OPCFG and the West Mansion sites) and Karry Blank asked me to make these sprites for some of their wedding cards and gave me permission to post the sprites:

Look at the smiles on those faces! I was proud that a couple would want me to make sprites for their wedding, and I still smile like a goof when seeing these. Congratulations again, you two!

So I made my first pixel print earlier this year, the Horror vs. Horror (I still don’t have a good name for that yet) title screen, which can be ordered here for $6 + S&H, nudge nudge, wink wink.

It used a mix of sprites I made for earlier horror-themed site updates along with some new stuff. I’m not sure how this happened, but Dread Central and Bloody Disgusting reported on it and it led to some sales! That was one of the few good things to happen during a pretty bad time (short version: I was kinda broke and injured), so everyone involved still has my thanks for making things better!

Did you enjoy your Werewolf Break? If you managed to read this far, you deserve a werewolf.

That lil’ Altered Beast is in the NES-like 32×16 and 32×32 sprite gallery.

Here are a few clips from the final installments of this week’s DangerTerrorHorrorThon…

Stay tuned.

I claimed that there wouldn’t be a DangerTerrorHorrorThon two months in a row, but that doesn’t mean I can’t have a small horror-centric update!

I drew a new pic of Splatterhouse’s Rick Taylor and converted it into pixel art portraits he can use in the GFX Generators. They’re in MSH Vs. and Vampire Hunter/Savior/whatever sizes. I also added a few Splatterhouse arcade sprites to the Splatterhouse sprite gallery.

I’ve finally started working on pixel art prints and here’s a preview of the first one I’ll be selling:

Everything in this print is scratch-made, including the background, and you’ll notice some new contestants in the selection grid and a few improvements in the older Jason and Freddy pixel art. I’ve ordered a test print of this for myself and will have it available for sale if it looks good. It will be on both the Illmosis prints page and a prints page that I’ll have on this site in the next update.

Get ready for two days of the sort of horror-based pixel nonsense that rarely happens here outside of October!

Pamela Voorhees returns to physical (well, pixel) realm in search of her son only to find look-a-likes, doppelgangers and pretenders. Why, these men aren’t her son! What should be done about this mockery? Unfortunately, her answer is the only answer she’s known since Jason drowned all those years ago: “Kill them, mommy! Kill them!”

Custom Sprites
Movies: Pamela Voorhees
Namco: Rick Taylor (Splatterhouse, new pose)
Sega: Kid Chameleon as Manaix
Taito: Booster (Growl/Runark)
Tecmo: Hockey-masked thug (new to replace the 2013 sprite)

The GFX Generators were updated with the new items.

Here’s a few links to some cool stuff to keep that horror groove going:
Anyone disappointed that the real Jason didn’t show up here today should check out Rusty Shackle’s artwork of Jason Voorhees.

The Xiamat Tumblr has a very cool, low-color .GIF of Freddy Krueger that looks like he’s glitching his own NES game from the inside.

Seriously, just follow both of those Tumblrs if you want more of that goodness.
