The fear is here once again! Here’s the first update:

Custom Sprites:
Monster Party: new separate gallery with a redrawn Mark
Ghosts ‘n Goblins series: PrinPrin and Unicorn
Horror: Rosemary (Demoni/Demons)
Golden Axe: improved the 2019 Skeleton sprites and gave them their own gallery. You’ll see why later.

The Dire and Bette channel recently had a live roundtable about the Ghosts ‘N Goblins series hosted by Dire and featuring Sotenga, ArcnarenthJim, and Dain

Next time, on the horror thon…

I’d noticed some issues in the image generators while working on May 22nd’s Pac-Man Anniversary update and started working on a few the next day. That led to working on a few random things and this is the result.

Custom Portraits – there are now two separate galleries for the custom portraits I’ve made/converted, with credits for as many things as I could find for the converted official art.
Street Fighter Alpha/Zero 3: same as the portraits page, but with an improved Billy Lee (Double Dragon)
Marvel Super Heroes – Capcom: finally, all the custom MSH-style portraits seen in the site’s image generators are in a gallery. The X-men CotA portraits will get a gallery soon.

A gallery for the X-Men: Children of the Atom custom portraits will be added soon.

Mini-logos:
Capcom: Rose (Street Fighter), Bishamon (Darkstalkers), Felicia (Darkstalkers)
Nintendo: Pokémon (redone), Pikachu (“Hey you, Pikachu” style)

BTW: Feel free to use these custom portraits and minilgos in your fan projects, just give me a credit somewhere.

These things were added to the graphics generators. Additional fixes include:
Marvel Super Heroes: fixes to the character list (originally copied from the SFA3 Vs. lists and using old temporary versions of characters made when I re-wrote the generator scripts).
– Fixed Firebrand’s Darkstalkers 3 portrait, made MSH vs versions of Arthur and Firebrand’s custom portraits.

The DangerTerrorHorrorThon is finally done, and it’s time for the wrap-up post (and a few extras):

Custom Sprites

Altered Beast: Werewolf (new pose), Neff, Aggar (flying head and whole Aggar), Chicken Stinger
Splatterhouse: Rick Taylor (new pose), Jennifer Willis, Evil Cross & Nightmare, Biggy Man, Nobu
Castlevania: Alucard, Queen Medusa, Sonia Belmont
Gauntlet: Demon
Ghosts ‘n Goblins series: Red Arremer/Firebrand
Mario Series: Boo
Zombies Ate My Neighbors: Stanley Decker
Illmosis/ScrollBoss: Ghost
the Horror gallery:
– Halloween: Michael Myers/The Shape (sheet disguise), Dr. Loomis, Jamie Lloyd, and, added today, an improved version of my 2016 Laurie Strode sprite
– Phantasm: the Tall Man (new version of blade-bearing spheres), Mike
– WNUF: Frank Stewart

Mini-logos: Sonia (Castlevania) added to Konami gallery, Carrie and Phantasm (Remastered) added to movie gallery.

All of these things were added to the GFX Generator, along with that new ominous arcade background.

The horror print (available on the shop page) made a cameo in a Destructoid article about some spooky Nintendo Switch games! Mad thanks to Jonathan Holmes for both buying a print and spreading the word! By the way, if you think the reshading job I did for the Laurie sprite looks like the horror print, well, we’ll have to save that conversation for a later date.

Hardcore Gaming 101 just released a new digest called The Guide to Retro Horror. The book includes material by Rob Strangman, creator of the legendary West Mansion Splatterhouse fan site and artwork by the always-fresh Rusty Shackles.

VGJunk has been on a roll with a wide variety of horror and monster game reviews throughout October, including Splatterhouse 3!

Arcade Quartermaster added new shrines, including Konami’s Haunted Castle, a game that’s considered scary for all the wrong reasons, and, to kick off Karnovember in the right way, the original arcade version of Karnov!

The movie became an instant favorite of mine when I saw it on Shudder long ago and I’m proud to own it on DVD (no VHS version for me… yet). There’s currently a GoFundMe campaign to get a sequel made! Consider helping out and supporting independent filmmaking if you can afford it!

Eddie in the City is having a sale on some cute, horror-themed miniatures, including a few game characters you’ll recognize if you’ve been following the HorrorThon!

This shmuplations.com translation of a 1988 interview with the Splatterhouse arcade team is right on time for the spooky season and full of interesting tidbits about the game’s creation.

In tomorrow’s installment of the Horrorthon, we celebrate 30 years of two gross, monster-filled arcade classics. When you rise from your grave tomorrow, put on your terror mask and come back for more gore than you bargained for. One of the new sprites is so large that it can’t fit in the GFX Generator screenshots!

First of all, just in case you didn’t come in through the front door, check out the new and improved index page. That new index pic is YEARS in the making, because I wanted the new version to have 0% sprite edits. That’s all scratch-made, including a sprite done for the new group shot and can’t be found in the galleries yet. I’ll let you find him for yourself. That external link icon set is new, too. Like a lot of the things in this update, it’s long overdue, so let’s get to the rest of it.

Info Center: After years of neglect, the Game Index, Company Index, S-Files/Character profiles and Definition/Vernacula-X sections have been recoded and the main page itself has a new pic with site character Vonetta (a.k.a. Vernacula). She’s in charge of the Info Center and likes the place to be quiet, so keep the noise down while you’re in there.. The pages mostly look the same, but there were a lot of little fixes and improvements to a lot of entries, and the new system I’m using for all of them makes it easy to make changes in the future. Unfortunately, since I’ve been working on this here-and-there since mid-2017, I don’t remember all the brand new pages, so this is a partial list:
– Definitions: Doppelgänger, fighting game, fixed screen, frankensprite, head swap, tile
– S-Files: Billy Lee, Jimmy Lee

Custom Sprites: there are now separate galleries for Alex Kidd, Ghosts ‘n Goblins, Ninja Gaiden, the Zelda series
Ghosts ‘n Goblins: a new scratch-made Arthur sprite.
Mega Man: a new scratch-made MvC1-style Mega Man sprite.
Data East: Santos (Trio the Punch)
Konami: Solid Snake (MGS)
Sega: Mary (Quartet)
Marvel: Black Cat (Spider-Man arcade fighting stance)
Illmosis: a new sprite of Vonetta (a.k.a. Vernacula)

Sprites: lots of behind-the-scenes work was done on nearly all the galleries, mostly switching to the new image display format. There are a few new things, though.
Golden Axe: the Duel: all arcade big portraits are now there (and separate) and an new .GIF of the final boss.
P.O.W.: new gallery with sprites of the player characters.

Mini-logos:
Konami: Metal Gear Solid

GFX Generators: All of the new custom sprites and mini-logo have been added to the main generator, where The Mego WGSH set-up gets a better set of Konami face circles.

**wipes brow** That’s all for now. Please let me know if you run into any errors or broken parts of the site, because this update changed at least 40% of the site!

The return of the most turd-curdling time of the year also means that it’s time for another DangerTerrorHorrorThon!

This Halloween’s DangerTerrorHorrorThon kicks off with an invasion of the living dead! Zombies are really played out right now now, so I’m dipping back into the past for inspiration, including one of the only universally-loved fast-moving zombies.

That’s right, we party on Monday.

Custom Sprites:
Capcom: Zombie (Ghosts ‘n Goblins, Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts versions)
Sega: Grave Master (Altered Beast)
Wayforward: Rottytops
DC Comics: Solomon Grundy (uploaded on a Monday)
Movies: Tarman (Return of the Living Dead)

Mini-logos:
Capcom: Ghosts ‘n Goblins

All new items have been added to the GFX Generators, where the G’nG Zombies and Grave Master (in the Altered Beast enemies char slot) have alternate palettes.

The marathon continues tomorrow!

The next real site update will be next week but I’m throwing some extra stuff out there for the funk of it. Here’s what’s cracklin’ today:

GFX Generators – The “name graphic display” part of the second menu has been cleaned up, more Vampire Savior/Hunter 2 name graphics were added (Arthur, Dracula, R.Taylor) and Arthur just got a custom portrait:

Game List – I forgot to mention that I got the best early Christmas present last week. Why should you give a crap? Because the game that I got with it has just been added to the Game List. What game is that? Little Big Planet. I finally have a so-called current gaming console so I’ll be able to work in more content about certain game re-releases and revivals.
