Street Fighter Alpha/Zero 3 portraits: Andore/Hugo (Final Fight/SF), Captain Commando, Harley Quinn (DC Comics), Spider-Man (Marvel), Black Widow (Marvel Comics)

Four of these were requests that I already wanted to make, but for various reasons (I had a Hugo/Andore sketched years ago, but didn’t like it) didn’t get done until now. Harley Quinn is just one I just had an itch to make.

Seeing my custom portraits in fake screenshots is one thing, but did you ever wonder how they’d look in the game? Using a new rendering technique, I made a short video using some of the older portraits I made from scratch:

What’s that rendering technique? I’ll tell you at the end of this post.

GFX Generator: The engine itself got some minor fixes, including a fix to some reflection effects. Also
– a “ScrollTech pattern background (added by request) added to the main generator

– The new portraits were added to the GFX Generators, mainly the SFA3 generator

Happy New Year and Happy Year of the Rabbit! I’ve spent most January 2023 working on a line art commission that you’ll see some time this year (it was teased by the author last year, but I can’t show it yet), so this update is a bit lighter than the usual First Update of the Year, but at least it has variety.

Custom Sprites:
Street Fighter: new Cammy SSF2 win pose, updated her other win pose sprite to match better with the others.
Marvel Comics: the Enchantress
DC Comics: the Rabbit enemy from Taito’s Superman arcade game
Illmosis Network – ScrollBoss: Vonetta “Vernacula” Paige gets a new sprite, a slightly modified outfit, a satchel and a last name in an all-new sprite!

All of these sprites are tied to things I plan to work on throughout the year, including a rabbit theme to celebrate the year.

Vernacula-X Glossary: Vonetta, mascot of the Info Center area of the site, threatened suggested I also work a bit on that part of the site, so I updated amazon (updated the main pic), Beat ‘Em Up (added info, main pic borrows the main menu “Brawlstreet” banner for now), Versus Mode (added more info and main pic) and minor updates to other entries.

Image Generators: All new custom sprites were added, and the following screen styles were updated…
– Vs 3v3 scene 384×224: 12 more Vs. graphics from different games were added.

My newest game-related action figure is the Marvel Legends Capcom-style War Machine (not that they mention Capcom, but we know the deal). The Iron Man sculpt it’s based on was already proven solid twice in the standard red and gold release and the special flat red and yellow PROTON CANNON edition from last year. The spark effects, also used in that Proton Cannon IM, are still great, but you’ll probably have to heat up the rubbery plastic of the biggest spark to bend it back into shape. What makes this version really sing is the use of metallic paints and plastics to mimic the sprite’s look. I’m not a fan of factory-done painted-on cel shading for action figures, 97 times out of 100 it just works against the sculpt work and only looks good if you have light coming from a specific direction (if it ever looks right). But this figure looks really close to the sprite when it’s hit with enough light, mimicking the car paint finish found in the sprites.

Ever wonder what would happen if Captain N: the Game Master had its own Netflix monkey paw-grasped revival? Friend of the site Channel 905 a take on that (and a few other things) in this video!

The lavishly animated 2.5 pixel art platformer Slave Zero X has a demo on Steam now!

Okay… I’m going to try and take a break again. A real one this time. Besides getting rest, I’ve got some new programs to learn, and maybe I’ll even take enough time to play a game again. I’ll be back at some point between late February and early March, but there may be some small updates before that.

I’m still on “break” but I had to add a little something to the site to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Capcom’s Street Fighter series:

GFX Generators
Street Fighter Alpha 3: SFA3 Max portraits added to Maki, Yun, Eagle, made from PPSSPP VRAM rips, as perfect as I could get them. “Where’s Ingrid?” I’ll get hers eventually. Characters who were mistakenly left off the “guest characters” list have been added: Geese Howard, Mai Shiranui, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

edit 2022 August 31st: HERE COMES A NEW CHALLENGER!

Ingrid from Street Fighter 3 Max & Capcom Fighting Evolution/Jam (and the sadly canceled Capcom Fighting All-Stars) is added to the SFA3 and fighter-scale generator.

I’m getting ready to work on some paid projects, but I also made some progress on the Guy vs. Mad Gear video.

guy-vs-madgear_postwave2preview_fullsize.pngguy-vs-madgear_postwave2preview_fullsize.png

This update has new and updated Capcom sprites, some fixes and additions to earlier updates, and a new video!

Mega Man – Roll (Classic)
Street Fighter – Chun-Li (in her brand-new Street Fighter 6 outfit), Street Fighter 2010’s Kevin Straker
Final Fight – Mike Haggar Final Fight 2
G.I.JOE – updated Cover-Girl, Doc, Quick Kick (made taller). Also added some section links at the top of the gallery so you can get to the sections more quickly.

Mini-Logos:
Capcom: Street Fighter 2010
DC Comics: Wonder Twins

As usual, all these new things have been added to the main Image Generator, where you can make (and right-click save) your own images like the one at the top of this news post!

I also made a video that recaps what I’ve posted and made during the first half of 2022. This includes some things I haven’t shown until now, including animations and video project previews (though I’m still holding back a bit here). This just might turn out to be a yearly thing, so I gave it the name of HalfTime.

BTW: the video uses the SMB regular reconstructed font by TheWolfBunny. It’s mad solid and has a lot of characters other pixel art-based fonts lack. Here’s where you can get it for yourself:

Those G.I. Joe sprite updates and that G.I.JOE HQ clip you saw in the HalfTime video’s “lab” are prep work for the “Yo Joe June” update later this month, which will include a few more G.I. JOE sprites! Currently working on more replacements of the old Capcom sprite edits and more “Original 13” (the original 13 members of the G.I.JOE line-up). Stay tuned!

There’s currently a Kickstarter campaign for a Ninja Baseball Spirits comic book! Yes, the Ninja Baseball Bat Man beat ’em up legend is fighting get it’s due right now, but the campaign still needs help to reach its goal. The comic has an all-star line-up of people who appreciate beat ’em ups, including Drew Maniscalco (the original creator of Ninja Baseball Bat Man), writer Dave Cook (“Go Straight: The Ultimate Guide to Side-Scrolling Beat ‘Em Ups”), and artist Steve Gregson (BPM: Beatdowns Per Minute). The comic will be available in digital and physical forms and there’s a wide array of extras for higher tiers, some including the beat ’em up-based BPM comic as a bonus. There are sample pages and artwork on the Kickstarter page, so check it out and give ’em a pledge if you’re interested (yes, I’ve got my pledge in already)!

There’s going to be a lot of twos February 2022 (02/2022), so I thought the 2nd would be a perfect day to lay out this site’s plans for the month and demonstrate with a few sprites.

Custom Sprites
Double Dragon: Billy and Jimmy Lee nunchaku stance (Super Double Dragon pose)
Street Fighter: all-new scratch-made Balrog (Boxer) in Street Fighter V and G.I.JOE outfits

Those sprites have been added to the GFX Generator, where you can make shots just like the one at the top of this post! The Lee Brothers’ sprites have far more extra palettes there than in the gallery.

Plans for the month:
1.) It’s Black History Month, which is when I make more sprites of Black characters, and that starts here with Balrog.
2.) February 22nd: Double or Nothing day – twos everywhere. Expect twins and Double Dragon-related things. More info soon.
3.) Expect a G.I.JOE update to drop sometime this month to celebrate the anniversary, including some sprites to replace the old sprite edits.

I’d noticed some issues in the image generators while working on May 22nd’s Pac-Man Anniversary update and started working on a few the next day. That led to working on a few random things and this is the result.

Custom Portraits – there are now two separate galleries for the custom portraits I’ve made/converted, with credits for as many things as I could find for the converted official art.
Street Fighter Alpha/Zero 3: same as the portraits page, but with an improved Billy Lee (Double Dragon)
Marvel Super Heroes – Capcom: finally, all the custom MSH-style portraits seen in the site’s image generators are in a gallery. The X-men CotA portraits will get a gallery soon.

A gallery for the X-Men: Children of the Atom custom portraits will be added soon.

Mini-logos:
Capcom: Rose (Street Fighter), Bishamon (Darkstalkers), Felicia (Darkstalkers)
Nintendo: Pokémon (redone), Pikachu (“Hey you, Pikachu” style)

BTW: Feel free to use these custom portraits and minilgos in your fan projects, just give me a credit somewhere.

These things were added to the graphics generators. Additional fixes include:
Marvel Super Heroes: fixes to the character list (originally copied from the SFA3 Vs. lists and using old temporary versions of characters made when I re-wrote the generator scripts).
– Fixed Firebrand’s Darkstalkers 3 portrait, made MSH vs versions of Arthur and Firebrand’s custom portraits.

For the first time in the year 2020, THE NEWNESS IS ON!

Custom Sprites:
Sonic series: Tails
Shinobi series: Karasu (the Revenge of Shinobi)
Spawn: Spawn (original outfit)
Marvel Comics: Spider-Woman
DC Comics: Starfire

BTW: the last three galleries are linked in the looong-overdue Comic Books Custom Sprite gallery hub.

Mini-logos: McFarlane: Spawn, Sega: Tails

All new sprites and mini-logos were added to the image generator, along with two Image Comics covers added to the 88×136 pixel option (even though the Spawn sprite is way too tall to fit in the cover).

Finally, here’s a short video teaser for some of the things I’ve been working on for the site, future videos, and more.

What the things in the video mean will be explained as I get to them, because it’ll be a hell of a lot easier to show you than explain. In the words of Guru, “Peace out, we’ll be back, stay tuned.”

The slow crawl of converting old parts of the site to the new format continues with the Tips section, something that’s been part of the site since the beginning. It’s now part of the “Info Center” group on the site. Some tips were fixed, rewritten, or had screenshots added. It mostly looks the same for now, but I still have the goal of consolidating the coding and look of the site.

Game Index: Alisia Dragoon (Genesis), Street Fighter Alpha 3 (arcade), Undercover Cops (arcade)

Sprites: Alisia Dragoon (just the Stage start graphic

GFX Generators: added Street Fighter Alpha 3 stages (Cammy, Dan, Dhalsim, Rose) to the main fighter-size generators, X-Men:CotA-style added to Marvel vs. Capcom ending, and some other stuff I forgot that was in the mix of what I uploaded.

About a month ago, after “the Revenge of 1989” update in August, I had a bit of pain in my hand. Part of it is due to my day job, but I’ll bet that all the pixel art I’ve been doing (including the unseen stuff for unfinished projects) hasn’t helped. I slowed down a bit and started stretching my hands more, which helped, but my drawing hand still gets a little sore if I spend too much time spriting. I’m going keep taking it a bit easier for a while, but don’t think that means you’ll be safe in late October.

In the year 2000 AD, the first version of this website was cobbled together with a some brief game reviews, a few tips and some sprites. Now it’s pretty much just a lot of sprites. But how many sprites are really enough? There’s never enough! So here we go with the 19th Anniversary Update!

Final Fight: Maki (scratch-made FF2 fight stance)
IREM: Ryno (Ninja Baseball Bat Man)
Metroid: Ridley (classic)
NuChallenger: Lisa Santiago (new pose, better style than my 2014 sprite)
RAK Graphics(new page): Chakan the Forever Man
Marvel: The Kingpin, Nick Fury (scratch-made “Punisher” Capcom fight stance in three versions)
(added July 20th)

Denjin Makai: Amazoness, Silf, Valkyrie

Ryno was done for EddieMountainGoat, one of the main people I know who want to see the NBBM team finished! The female acrobats from Denjin Makai were added for SKB, another friend of the site!

By the way: I’ve had a chance to meet Robert A. Kraus, the creator of Chakan, a few times at events in the area this year and I was able to give him a printout of the Chakan sprite (and mini-logo) at the Youngstown Comic-Con a few weeks ago. Not only is he a great indy comic creator, writer and artist, but he’s a toy customizer and just a really cool person to talk to if you find him at a convention. If you’re like me and always wondered what the Chakan comics are like, check out the RAK Graphics site for a look at the Forever Man and more. There’s a mix of horror with sword & sorcery/fantasy and I’m glad I’m finally getting to read it.

Mini-logos: the Kingpin (Marvel gallery), Chakan (RAK Graphics gallery), Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (Midway/Williams gallery and DC gallery)

GFX Generators: Various improvements and bug fixes were made to the main engine, including allowing you to change text and font on the Picture Modification screen. I added that part a few days ago, but needed to make a few more fixes to it. Please let me know if you run into any problems with this.

the new sprites, mini-logos and more have been added, along with…
– other updated characters: Mega Man, Cammy, Chun-Li, Sakura, Vega, Apocalypse, Iceman, Rogue
– idle/fight stance added: Adon, Balrog, Blanka, Sagat, Blackheart, Captain America, Colossus, Gambit, Magneto, Juggernaut, Omega Red, Sentinel, Silver Samurai, Spider-Man, Shuma-Gorath, Storm (Marvel), Thanos
– fighter-sized screenstyles: Marvel Legends updated with X-Men Sauron-series box.

Here’s possibly the biggest part of the site update: Marvel vs. Capcom 1 endings have been added to the Fighter sprite generator (edit 2019-07-23: or just go to this separate generator page I just added that’s specifically Marvel vs. Capcom)!

Choose up to five characters, pick a background (65 so far), sprite layout (mostly based on actual endings) and frame, add your own text.
edit 2019-07-21: added MSHvsSF and SFA/Z3 looks (still MvC1 layout and character limits) and over a dozen SFA3 backgrounds to MvC 1 ending

ScrollBoss Shop: All prints are on sale for the rest of July! 8×10 and 8×11 prints are $4.00 each!
11 x 17/11 x 14 prints $8.00 each! Sale prices are also in effect for the main Illmosis print page, which has more than game or pixel-related prints.

I may add more to the update through the weekend, so don’t be surprised if this post changes. There’s one more thing I’ve got, but I may not have it ready before the day is over, but I’ll add it here once it’s done. It’s about 95%, but I’m waiting on a gift from a guest contributor you should recognize.

Whether you’ve been here before or this is your first visit, thank you for stopping and I hope you enjoy this mess of a site!

Most of what I’ve been working on lately isn’t ready to show yet, but you’ll get a preview later in the post. I still have some new things done for the site:

Info Center: more small additions, fixes and improvements were made here and there to the new items system
S-Files: new profiles for Akira, Gil, Glen and Mark from Karate Blazers
Vernacula-X: new separate pages for pro wrestler and power-up, new images for boss and ninja.

Custom Sprites:
Growl: new scratch-made sprites of the Rangers (Gen, Burn, Khan, Jack) and the Dolls.
Rolling Thunder: new scratch-made sprites of Albatross and Leila from Rolling Thunder 2

GFX Generators:
– Dan Hibiki: thanks to a site visitor who wanted Dan’s CvS sprites and told me that Kong’s rips fit the same size as other sprites, Dan has CvS sprites now!
– the Marvel Legends box now has the Spider-Man box style. It’s easy to get pics of the outside of the box, but I have to get and scan my own box inserts, and getting classic Beetle (yes, I know who the Beetle is) let me do that. I still need to get a classic Taskmaster Marvel Legend to do the new Avengers box, though.

Work on the sequel to the “Horror vs.” print (with Freddy vs. Jason) is on the way and here’s a preview:

Even if you saw the preview I posted on Twitter and Instagram a few days ago, this one has a few changes, including some changed characters. I’m still not 100% sure about the “roster,” but I’ll talk more about that at a later date.

I’ll be at the Youngstown Comic Con at the Covelli Center this year, but only on Sunday, July 8th (I’m still working part of the weekend at my day job). It’s mostly a comic convention, but you’ll be sure to find video games and game-related stuff there, too. I finally got Gauntlet IV for Genesis at last year’s con. I’ll have both line art and pixel art prints, along with sketch cards and mini-prints that I don’t have on the site yet. If you can make it to NE Ohio on July 7th and or 8th, please check out the Youngstown Comic Con!
