I’d noticed some issues in the image generators while working on May 22nd’s Pac-Man Anniversary update and started working on a few the next day. That led to working on a few random things and this is the result.

Custom Portraits – there are now two separate galleries for the custom portraits I’ve made/converted, with credits for as many things as I could find for the converted official art.
Street Fighter Alpha/Zero 3: same as the portraits page, but with an improved Billy Lee (Double Dragon)
Marvel Super Heroes – Capcom: finally, all the custom MSH-style portraits seen in the site’s image generators are in a gallery. The X-men CotA portraits will get a gallery soon.

A gallery for the X-Men: Children of the Atom custom portraits will be added soon.

Mini-logos:
Capcom: Rose (Street Fighter), Bishamon (Darkstalkers), Felicia (Darkstalkers)
Nintendo: Pokémon (redone), Pikachu (“Hey you, Pikachu” style)

BTW: Feel free to use these custom portraits and minilgos in your fan projects, just give me a credit somewhere.

These things were added to the graphics generators. Additional fixes include:
Marvel Super Heroes: fixes to the character list (originally copied from the SFA3 Vs. lists and using old temporary versions of characters made when I re-wrote the generator scripts).
– Fixed Firebrand’s Darkstalkers 3 portrait, made MSH vs versions of Arthur and Firebrand’s custom portraits.

For the first time in the year 2020, THE NEWNESS IS ON!

Custom Sprites:
Sonic series: Tails
Shinobi series: Karasu (the Revenge of Shinobi)
Spawn: Spawn (original outfit)
Marvel Comics: Spider-Woman
DC Comics: Starfire

BTW: the last three galleries are linked in the looong-overdue Comic Books Custom Sprite gallery hub.

Mini-logos: McFarlane: Spawn, Sega: Tails

All new sprites and mini-logos were added to the image generator, along with two Image Comics covers added to the 88×136 pixel option (even though the Spawn sprite is way too tall to fit in the cover).

Finally, here’s a short video teaser for some of the things I’ve been working on for the site, future videos, and more.

What the things in the video mean will be explained as I get to them, because it’ll be a hell of a lot easier to show you than explain. In the words of Guru, “Peace out, we’ll be back, stay tuned.”

The slow crawl of converting old parts of the site to the new format continues with the Tips section, something that’s been part of the site since the beginning. It’s now part of the “Info Center” group on the site. Some tips were fixed, rewritten, or had screenshots added. It mostly looks the same for now, but I still have the goal of consolidating the coding and look of the site.

Game Index: Alisia Dragoon (Genesis), Street Fighter Alpha 3 (arcade), Undercover Cops (arcade)

Sprites: Alisia Dragoon (just the Stage start graphic

GFX Generators: added Street Fighter Alpha 3 stages (Cammy, Dan, Dhalsim, Rose) to the main fighter-size generators, X-Men:CotA-style added to Marvel vs. Capcom ending, and some other stuff I forgot that was in the mix of what I uploaded.

About a month ago, after “the Revenge of 1989” update in August, I had a bit of pain in my hand. Part of it is due to my day job, but I’ll bet that all the pixel art I’ve been doing (including the unseen stuff for unfinished projects) hasn’t helped. I slowed down a bit and started stretching my hands more, which helped, but my drawing hand still gets a little sore if I spend too much time spriting. I’m going keep taking it a bit easier for a while, but don’t think that means you’ll be safe in late October.

In the year 2000 AD, the first version of this website was cobbled together with a some brief game reviews, a few tips and some sprites. Now it’s pretty much just a lot of sprites. But how many sprites are really enough? There’s never enough! So here we go with the 19th Anniversary Update!

Final Fight: Maki (scratch-made FF2 fight stance)
IREM: Ryno (Ninja Baseball Bat Man)
Metroid: Ridley (classic)
NuChallenger: Lisa Santiago (new pose, better style than my 2014 sprite)
RAK Graphics(new page): Chakan the Forever Man
Marvel: The Kingpin, Nick Fury (scratch-made “Punisher” Capcom fight stance in three versions)
(added July 20th)

Denjin Makai: Amazoness, Silf, Valkyrie

Ryno was done for EddieMountainGoat, one of the main people I know who want to see the NBBM team finished! The female acrobats from Denjin Makai were added for SKB, another friend of the site!

By the way: I’ve had a chance to meet Robert A. Kraus, the creator of Chakan, a few times at events in the area this year and I was able to give him a printout of the Chakan sprite (and mini-logo) at the Youngstown Comic-Con a few weeks ago. Not only is he a great indy comic creator, writer and artist, but he’s a toy customizer and just a really cool person to talk to if you find him at a convention. If you’re like me and always wondered what the Chakan comics are like, check out the RAK Graphics site for a look at the Forever Man and more. There’s a mix of horror with sword & sorcery/fantasy and I’m glad I’m finally getting to read it.

Mini-logos: the Kingpin (Marvel gallery), Chakan (RAK Graphics gallery), Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (Midway/Williams gallery and DC gallery)

GFX Generators: Various improvements and bug fixes were made to the main engine, including allowing you to change text and font on the Picture Modification screen. I added that part a few days ago, but needed to make a few more fixes to it. Please let me know if you run into any problems with this.

the new sprites, mini-logos and more have been added, along with…
– other updated characters: Mega Man, Cammy, Chun-Li, Sakura, Vega, Apocalypse, Iceman, Rogue
– idle/fight stance added: Adon, Balrog, Blanka, Sagat, Blackheart, Captain America, Colossus, Gambit, Magneto, Juggernaut, Omega Red, Sentinel, Silver Samurai, Spider-Man, Shuma-Gorath, Storm (Marvel), Thanos
– fighter-sized screenstyles: Marvel Legends updated with X-Men Sauron-series box.

Here’s possibly the biggest part of the site update: Marvel vs. Capcom 1 endings have been added to the Fighter sprite generator (edit 2019-07-23: or just go to this separate generator page I just added that’s specifically Marvel vs. Capcom)!

Choose up to five characters, pick a background (65 so far), sprite layout (mostly based on actual endings) and frame, add your own text.
edit 2019-07-21: added MSHvsSF and SFA/Z3 looks (still MvC1 layout and character limits) and over a dozen SFA3 backgrounds to MvC 1 ending

ScrollBoss Shop: All prints are on sale for the rest of July! 8×10 and 8×11 prints are $4.00 each!
11 x 17/11 x 14 prints $8.00 each! Sale prices are also in effect for the main Illmosis print page, which has more than game or pixel-related prints.

I may add more to the update through the weekend, so don’t be surprised if this post changes. There’s one more thing I’ve got, but I may not have it ready before the day is over, but I’ll add it here once it’s done. It’s about 95%, but I’m waiting on a gift from a guest contributor you should recognize.

Whether you’ve been here before or this is your first visit, thank you for stopping and I hope you enjoy this mess of a site!

Most of what I’ve been working on lately isn’t ready to show yet, but you’ll get a preview later in the post. I still have some new things done for the site:

Info Center: more small additions, fixes and improvements were made here and there to the new items system
S-Files: new profiles for Akira, Gil, Glen and Mark from Karate Blazers
Vernacula-X: new separate pages for pro wrestler and power-up, new images for boss and ninja.

Custom Sprites:
Growl: new scratch-made sprites of the Rangers (Gen, Burn, Khan, Jack) and the Dolls.
Rolling Thunder: new scratch-made sprites of Albatross and Leila from Rolling Thunder 2

GFX Generators:
– Dan Hibiki: thanks to a site visitor who wanted Dan’s CvS sprites and told me that Kong’s rips fit the same size as other sprites, Dan has CvS sprites now!
– the Marvel Legends box now has the Spider-Man box style. It’s easy to get pics of the outside of the box, but I have to get and scan my own box inserts, and getting classic Beetle (yes, I know who the Beetle is) let me do that. I still need to get a classic Taskmaster Marvel Legend to do the new Avengers box, though.

Work on the sequel to the “Horror vs.” print (with Freddy vs. Jason) is on the way and here’s a preview:

Even if you saw the preview I posted on Twitter and Instagram a few days ago, this one has a few changes, including some changed characters. I’m still not 100% sure about the “roster,” but I’ll talk more about that at a later date.

I’ll be at the Youngstown Comic Con at the Covelli Center this year, but only on Sunday, July 8th (I’m still working part of the weekend at my day job). It’s mostly a comic convention, but you’ll be sure to find video games and game-related stuff there, too. I finally got Gauntlet IV for Genesis at last year’s con. I’ll have both line art and pixel art prints, along with sketch cards and mini-prints that I don’t have on the site yet. If you can make it to NE Ohio on July 7th and or 8th, please check out the Youngstown Comic Con!

Happy 30th anniversary to the original Street Fighter game

New sprites of Street Fighter 1’s Geki (an often-requested sprite) and SSF4’s Juri (a few people asked for her, too) help to kick off the new Street Fighter Custom Sprites page. There isn’t a lot there yet, but I figured today would be a great day to set up the gallery. Of course, they’re also in the main image generator that I used to make the graphic at the top of the post.

No promises, but I might make a few more Street Fighter sprites to add to this update, even after the anniversary day is over.

edit (2017-09-01): Now that I’ve gotten some rest, here comes a new challenger sprite:

Always wanted to do a tribute to that Super Street Fighter II intro and this seems like a good time to do it!

I would’ve had more done, but I spent most of my free time yesterday working on one of the dozens of sprite video ideas I’ve had in my head for almost as long as I’ve had this site. I just decided it was time to stop doing the bit-by-bit work on it while chasing themes and anniversaries. Oddly enough, there will be a lot of Street Fighters in it. Here’s a sneak peek:

The new GFX Generator engine has been upgraded to the point that it can replicate the Street Fighter Alpha 3 Vs. screen, though the ISM is stuck at X-ISM for now. I’ve added upgraded versions of every (I think) character from the old generator that had SFA3 portraits, and a few now have alternate palettes. Two new SFA3 portraits have been added: Cammy (a Delta Red edit of her Shadowloo pic) and Double Dragon’s Lee Brothers. The Lee Brothers pic was sketched out last year, but decided to wait until I got the portrait palette feature working.

Some of the older SFA3 portraits now have alternate palettes, but you’ll have to look around to see who has them. There will eventually be separate pages for certain generators where you’ll only see characters that work 100% with that specific screen, but things will be a bit jumbled until then.

Breakin’ News:

The always-productive Zvitor just released his long-awaited “Justice League vs. Street Fighter” crossover fan game!

Don’t worry, Gotham-related characters don’t dominate the DC side and some Final Fight mainstays in the Street Fighter side. You’ll also find a few surprise characters in the mix. You can download it from this page on Zvitor’s site.

edit (2016 04 16): This update hit the site in the wee hours of the morning, before I knew it was the birthday of artist Rusty Shackles. Happy birthday to him and both the site and site creator of VGJunk, who celebrated with a look at Final Fight!

This is just a small update with a few odds and ends added to the site, including a few things that I forgot to add in the last update.

Custom Sprites:
– Technos: Kunio-Kun (NES-like fighting stance)
– Tecmo: the new Ryu Hayabusa sprite was improved and another variation was added.

Mini-logos:
– Marvel: Marrow, Omega Red
– Movies: Do the Right Thing
– Nintendo: Super Smash Bros. (2014)

GFX Generators: The new items mentioned above were added to their respective characters along with the following things:
– GroupShot Generator: A Tecmo NES (Ninja Gaiden) setup was added to the 160×192 game boxes.
– Capcom: Chun-Li (added CvS sprites, tweaked palettes), Dudley (SF3-to-CvS converted sprite)
– Tecmo: Ryu Hayabusa (new and improved sprites and palettes)

Heads-up: Double Dragon Trilogy, a collection of the three original arcade Double Dragon games on Steam right now. It’s on sale for $4.79 until January 22! I haven’t bought and tried it yet, but I will before the sale is over.

There will be a themed update for both ScrollBoss and the main Illmosis site next week on January 20th. What’s the theme? Well, it’s on the 20th for a specific reason and I’ll have to upload it before 8 PM. While it isn’t specifically game-related, the theme’s name allows me to slip in some game stuff, including a boss I missed in the 1989 updates. That’s all I’m giving you for now.

The moving is done, I’m hooked up to the internet again and I finally have a chance to rest this weekend. This is partially an “I’m back and I’m still alive” post, but there are a few small fixes and clean-up work. Besides, with this being the 8th month and the 9th day of a year in which I’m pushing 1989 awareness, I had to put up some sort of update, right?

GFX Generator – The Doppelganger boss’ final form from the Revenge of Shinobi was added to the “Zeed/Neo Zeed” character slot. Ryu’s SFA-style palettes were increased (with fixes to a few older ones) while Rolento got two new poses and many more new palettes (redone with separate pants colors for USF4 palettes). The “Mego WGSH 176×192” style in the GroupShot generator has two new groups of bubbles, and I’ll let you discover who’s in them.

Nico-waz-here was kind enough to send some Tiny Toons portrait rips from a GBA game I hadn’t even heard about, so check out that beautiful art here.

There is now a ScrollBoss YouTube channel, though it only has a re-post the short Revenge of 1989 video for now.

Check out this interview with Rob “Dire” Strangman about the Memoirs of a Virtual Caveman book! It’s great to see that book get more attention. My name pops up for an unexpected reason. Be sure to check out that book, too!

Well, it’s time for me to collapse and attempt to get some rest. I’m all moved in now, so expect a real site update soon with more 1989-related goodness. Until then, here’s a preview of some shaky sprite line work.

edit (2014 August 10th)

GFX Generator addition: Kirby has 3 new palettes and that Mego WGSH has a new custom face circle set with Nintendo characters.

GFX Generators – Now that the sprites and palette selections are on different pages, I’ll be adding more of both to a few characters in this and future small updates. As a back-up to the Bravoman update, the full “Bravoman X Wonder Momo” cover set-up and logo was added to the “Comics 88×136 pixels” style.
Capcom: Cammy (sprite and SFA3 palettes), Chun-Li (3 SFA-Classic sprites, 14 redone palettes), Dhalsim (sprite and SFA3 & MSHvsSF palettes), Ken (2 SFA-set sprites and palettes), M.Bison (6 SFA-set sprites added, palettes expanded)
Namco: Bravoman (Bravo Black palette added), Chomp Chomp added
Marvel: Gambit (new palette), Psylocke (sprites & palettes), Super-Skrull (4 new sprites)

Custom Sprites – Four new Super-Skrull variations (Thing fist, Fantastic fist, Torch arms and 4 powers at the same time) were added to the Marvel page. Chomp Chomp, Pac-Man’s dog, was added to the Namco page.

I’m going to be at the All AmeriCon convention in Warren, Ohio on July 7th. I made a Tumblr post about it here with more info and the Facebook (sorry) page for the event is here. Updates will be small until then because I need to get ready for this along with getting another website up and running. The next big update will be on July 19th, this website’s birthday. This site also has its own Twitter account now and you can keep up with updates from that, this site’s WP RSS feed or the site’s Tumblr that I linked to earlier.
