A new sprite of April O’Neil in her Shredder’s Revenge fight stance has been added to the TMNT Custom Sprites gallery and the the main Image Generator

Of course this is in honor of the long-awaited release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, bringing the Green Machine (and friends) back to the pixelart-based beat ’em up format for some arcady good times. Just got it as a gift from a friend before I could even buy it myself (thanks, Z!) and I’ll be digging into it this weekend!

There’s a new killer-looking 2.5D platformer on the horizon, and the name of the game is Slave Zero X. Yes, it’s connected to the Dreamcast game, and here’s the first taste of the action:
Slave Zero X – Announcement Trailer
Look at that crisp, beautiful pixel art and animation. No surprise that I wishlisted this as fast as I could. Here’s the Steam page for it if you’re in the mood to do the same:

Reminder: the Ninja Baseball Spirits comic book Kickstarter campaign, officially based on the Ninja Baseball Bat Man beat ’em up, is still going on with 16 days to go! Both physical and digital versions of the comic (as well as the BPM comic) are available in the campaign, so please check it out and pledge if you dig it and can afford to do so!

I’m still working on the Yo Joe June update, stay tuned!

This update has new and updated Capcom sprites, some fixes and additions to earlier updates, and a new video!

Mega Man – Roll (Classic)
Street Fighter – Chun-Li (in her brand-new Street Fighter 6 outfit), Street Fighter 2010’s Kevin Straker
Final Fight – Mike Haggar Final Fight 2
G.I.JOE – updated Cover-Girl, Doc, Quick Kick (made taller). Also added some section links at the top of the gallery so you can get to the sections more quickly.

Mini-Logos:
Capcom: Street Fighter 2010
DC Comics: Wonder Twins

As usual, all these new things have been added to the main Image Generator, where you can make (and right-click save) your own images like the one at the top of this news post!

I also made a video that recaps what I’ve posted and made during the first half of 2022. This includes some things I haven’t shown until now, including animations and video project previews (though I’m still holding back a bit here). This just might turn out to be a yearly thing, so I gave it the name of HalfTime.

BTW: the video uses the SMB regular reconstructed font by TheWolfBunny. It’s mad solid and has a lot of characters other pixel art-based fonts lack. Here’s where you can get it for yourself:

Those G.I. Joe sprite updates and that G.I.JOE HQ clip you saw in the HalfTime video’s “lab” are prep work for the “Yo Joe June” update later this month, which will include a few more G.I. JOE sprites! Currently working on more replacements of the old Capcom sprite edits and more “Original 13” (the original 13 members of the G.I.JOE line-up). Stay tuned!

There’s currently a Kickstarter campaign for a Ninja Baseball Spirits comic book! Yes, the Ninja Baseball Bat Man beat ’em up legend is fighting get it’s due right now, but the campaign still needs help to reach its goal. The comic has an all-star line-up of people who appreciate beat ’em ups, including Drew Maniscalco (the original creator of Ninja Baseball Bat Man), writer Dave Cook (“Go Straight: The Ultimate Guide to Side-Scrolling Beat ‘Em Ups”), and artist Steve Gregson (BPM: Beatdowns Per Minute). The comic will be available in digital and physical forms and there’s a wide array of extras for higher tiers, some including the beat ’em up-based BPM comic as a bonus. There are sample pages and artwork on the Kickstarter page, so check it out and give ’em a pledge if you’re interested (yes, I’ve got my pledge in already)!

Finally, a day when Batman gets more attention than other characters! I dropped some Batman-related sprites in the Revenge of 1989 update, but I’ve got a couple more AND a sprite that finally finishes a beat ’em up crew!

DC Comics: Improved the “Blue and Gray” sprites of Batman, added a Dick Grayson teen Robin
Ninja Baseball Bat Man – Roger finally steps up to the plate and completes the playable team!

These sprites have been added to the fighting game-scale GFX Generator and Batman now has extra palettes.

One more thing: here’s a quick little animation of Batman I was working on. Still rough (esp. the cape), but far enough to show where it is now:

Bonus:

Here’s a video from the excellent Superhero VG Channel about what things were like when the Batman 1989 hit:

In the year 2000 AD, the first version of this website was cobbled together with a some brief game reviews, a few tips and some sprites. Now it’s pretty much just a lot of sprites. But how many sprites are really enough? There’s never enough! So here we go with the 19th Anniversary Update!

Final Fight: Maki (scratch-made FF2 fight stance)
IREM: Ryno (Ninja Baseball Bat Man)
Metroid: Ridley (classic)
NuChallenger: Lisa Santiago (new pose, better style than my 2014 sprite)
RAK Graphics(new page): Chakan the Forever Man
Marvel: The Kingpin, Nick Fury (scratch-made “Punisher” Capcom fight stance in three versions)
(added July 20th)

Denjin Makai: Amazoness, Silf, Valkyrie

Ryno was done for EddieMountainGoat, one of the main people I know who want to see the NBBM team finished! The female acrobats from Denjin Makai were added for SKB, another friend of the site!

By the way: I’ve had a chance to meet Robert A. Kraus, the creator of Chakan, a few times at events in the area this year and I was able to give him a printout of the Chakan sprite (and mini-logo) at the Youngstown Comic-Con a few weeks ago. Not only is he a great indy comic creator, writer and artist, but he’s a toy customizer and just a really cool person to talk to if you find him at a convention. If you’re like me and always wondered what the Chakan comics are like, check out the RAK Graphics site for a look at the Forever Man and more. There’s a mix of horror with sword & sorcery/fantasy and I’m glad I’m finally getting to read it.

Mini-logos: the Kingpin (Marvel gallery), Chakan (RAK Graphics gallery), Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (Midway/Williams gallery and DC gallery)

GFX Generators: Various improvements and bug fixes were made to the main engine, including allowing you to change text and font on the Picture Modification screen. I added that part a few days ago, but needed to make a few more fixes to it. Please let me know if you run into any problems with this.

the new sprites, mini-logos and more have been added, along with…
– other updated characters: Mega Man, Cammy, Chun-Li, Sakura, Vega, Apocalypse, Iceman, Rogue
– idle/fight stance added: Adon, Balrog, Blanka, Sagat, Blackheart, Captain America, Colossus, Gambit, Magneto, Juggernaut, Omega Red, Sentinel, Silver Samurai, Spider-Man, Shuma-Gorath, Storm (Marvel), Thanos
– fighter-sized screenstyles: Marvel Legends updated with X-Men Sauron-series box.

Here’s possibly the biggest part of the site update: Marvel vs. Capcom 1 endings have been added to the Fighter sprite generator (edit 2019-07-23: or just go to this separate generator page I just added that’s specifically Marvel vs. Capcom)!

Choose up to five characters, pick a background (65 so far), sprite layout (mostly based on actual endings) and frame, add your own text.
edit 2019-07-21: added MSHvsSF and SFA/Z3 looks (still MvC1 layout and character limits) and over a dozen SFA3 backgrounds to MvC 1 ending

ScrollBoss Shop: All prints are on sale for the rest of July! 8×10 and 8×11 prints are $4.00 each!
11 x 17/11 x 14 prints $8.00 each! Sale prices are also in effect for the main Illmosis print page, which has more than game or pixel-related prints.

I may add more to the update through the weekend, so don’t be surprised if this post changes. There’s one more thing I’ve got, but I may not have it ready before the day is over, but I’ll add it here once it’s done. It’s about 95%, but I’m waiting on a gift from a guest contributor you should recognize.

Whether you’ve been here before or this is your first visit, thank you for stopping and I hope you enjoy this mess of a site!

To everyone who has checked out the site back in the days of Vs. Mode fights and Minus World madness (the site section, not the completely different website), those who just visited for the first time today and every party person who falls somewhere in between, thank you for stopping by and making these sixteen pixel-packed years fly by. Get ready for multiple days of anniversary updates, starting with a seven-sprite kickoff!

Custom Sprites:
Capcom: Protoman (with variant)
Konami: Sledge (Vendetta/Crime Fighters 2)
– – Castlevania: Trevor Belmont, Sypha (SotN Cape up variant of the earlier sprite)
IREM: Straw from Ninja Baseball Bat Man
Taito: Sayo-chan (a.k.a. Pocky) from Kiki Kai Kai, Zeke from Zoo Keeper (both in-game and cabinet art styles)
Sega: Sonic the Hedgehog… decided to start running right as I clicked on the GFX Generator screenshot maker. See, that’s just rude. Maybe someone told him Protoman was the coolest person in the pic or perhaps he was scared off by the Zoo Keeper. Don’t worry, this isn’t the only update this week, so let’s see if I can get him to slow down for another sprite before the anniversary updates are done.

All sprites were added to the aforementioned GFX Generators (the old GroupShot and Vs generators).

The site will be going on a short pause for a while, but this update is here to give you a taste of what you’ll be seeing this year.

More games and game series will get their own custom sprite gallery pages, like Streets of Rage did in this update. Axel, Blaze, Max and Electra have new sprites to kick off that new gallery page. Meanwhile, Kung-Fu Master’s Thomas’ new scratch-made sprite and Jose from Ninja Baseball Bat Man hit the IREM gallery. I doubt that I’ll be able to have ALL the old sprite edits replaced with scratch-made work this year, but I plan to come close to it. These things, along with two IREM-related minilogos, have been added to the GFX Generators.

I have a lot of things to work on during the site pause. I have a commission assignment I’ve been working on, a new version of the GFX Generators (see this Tumblr post for details), and more things like this:

I plan to finally knock the dust off of the ScrollBoss YouTube channel this year and part of my January has been spent working on material.

Zweifuss, sprite ripper and creator of that massive Street Fighter III: Third Strike site, needs help renewing the site for another year. Please donate to the cause if you can, especially if the site has helped you. Any SFIII stuff you see on my site, including sprite edits that started as SFIII sprites, come from his rips

Shout out to Jessica for the feedback https://quitday.org/ and http://www.ffsonline.org for the link help!
(edit: links deactivated, don’t seem to be what they used to be anymore)

I’ll still be active on Tumblr and Twitter, posting stuff like this:

To quote Guru, “Peace out. We’ll be back. Stay tuned.”

edit: I was going to save this clip until later, but, as ol’ Jack Burton says, what the hell…
