My internet connection has been faulty since last week and it’s too unpredictable to upload the next update. It randomly blinks out and causes me to be disconnected for seconds, minutes or even hours. The Graphic Generators upgrade is something that will completely screw things up if my connection decides to stop working in the middle of uploading it. The new features aren’t that major but I need to be sure they’ll all get on site or they won’t work until I’m back online. I apologize for the delay and I’ll keep working on things to make the update even bigger to make up for lost time.

I’m still building up enough content to have a decent update. Beside that preview I posted in the weblog last week, I have some other things done for the generator including minor adjustments to the engine itself. I also have two new GroupShot themes nearly done. Here’s the one I’m 100% done with:

Super Powers by Kenner

This was something I wanted to do for the big Superhero update last year but I decided to go with the Mego package since it could work for both Marvel and DC. The other is ready to go now but I want to add some more optional graphics before I show you. I’ll have this and more ready in the next update.

Breakin’ News

LittleBigPlanet 2 is out now and word on the street is that it’s amazing. It’ll be a while before I can get it but I will get it. Here’s something that a lot of people are missing: the Spacesuit costume is back. It’s only available in special instances so get it now. Go to the PSN store and it’s add-ons section but go to the LittleBigPlanet2 add-ons instead of the regular LBP section. The completely free Spacesuit is in there and works with both LBP 1 and 2.

Wizzy has been on an unstoppable rampage of fine, fine CPS2-style music and this one is just filled with magic:

That cool-looking X sprite is by Camo. Great job on that, too! Check out Wizzy’s YouTube page and subscribe if you like what you hear.

The image generators on this site work but the interface looks uglier than a wet food stamp on a bowling shoe. I know this and I’m working on that. Here’s a preview:

Gfx Generator redesign

Both generators share the same engine to make pictures but the layouts were unique to each one. That meant I had to fix one then copy and paste the new code from one to the other. This didn’t always work. This new version uses a template so I can improve all the generator designs at once. There will be more generators added this year so this will save me a lot of time. There’s still a bit of work to do to make the size more adaptable to different resolutions but it’s mostly done now. This new version will hit the site some time this later month.

Here is a quick update with a cool sprite donation and some news.

Sprite Rips – Makron’s giant pack of Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon (arcade) sprites has been updated. This pack includes things that don’t even appear when you play the game so it’s worth the download if you plan to make a fan game or are just a fan of the Sailor Scouts.

Game Index – Streets of Rage 3 was added. Minor adjustments were made to the Sega company page. One minor goal I have for early 2011 is to have Game Index pages for certain series that I really like (Final Fight, SoR, Golden Axe) and those that don’t get much attention on English-speaking sites (Rushing Beat, Crime Fighters) before I start the Series Index (a new version of the old Saga section) later in the year. I’ll try to get at add at least one game to the index in every mini-update.

Breakin’ News

Item 1: Bionic Commando: Re-Armed is on sale for only $4.99 on Playstation Network. I gladly paid that much at K-Mart for my replacement copy of the NES cart over ten years ago so I’d say that getting an incredibly solid remake on a current-gen system is a steal. It’s more than a remake… it’s an adventure. If you’re even thinking about getting it, just get it now.

It was also announced that Hudson’s Turbografx-16 games will finally start hitting North American Playstation store. Check out the Destructoid story right here. New Adventure Island, Bonk’s Adventure and Bomberman ’94 will be in the first batch. It’s good to see some more old-school games hitting the network.

Item 2: Just in case you haven’t heard the good news…

… Mike Haggar is back.

Item 3: I just found out about the following man thanks to the creative double-threat known as Dynamowolf. I’m only learning about him now because I’m a shut-in even on the internet. Most of you will know his work already:

YouTube: WizzyWhipitWonderful

Yes, that’s a remix in the glorious style of a mid-90’s CPS-2 arcade game and it’s the work of Wizzy. He’s back on YouTube with new material that’s specifically designed to give eargasms to anyone who misses that raw sound you miss from X-Men:CotA and Marvel Super Heroes before Capcom’s BGM’s started getting all lounge-jazzy on us. Nothing against that but it doesn’t mix with fighting for most of us. He has a ton of work posted already so go through the catalog to hear some great remixes of various Capcom tracks including a few surprises. Be sure to subscribe and drop a note to let him know that you like what he’s layin’ down.

That’s enough for today. Have a good weekend!

Here’s the final update for the tenth anniversary year:

Games Index – Black Tiger and Magic Sword (Arcade) were added. Final Fight (Arcade) and Golden Axe (Arcade) were modified.

Sprites – Black Tiger sprites and cinema scenes added.

Custom Sprites – Storm Shadow added to the G.I.JOE page.

Game Logos – Black Dragon, Black Tiger, Magic Sword added.

Mini Logos – The G.I. JOE, Cobra, He-Man and Thundercat mini-logos from last week’s GFX Generator updates from Christmas are now in this gallery.

MugenBoss – There’s no new content but I added List Index pages for Magic Sword and Kirby.

That’s it for 2010’s updates and I hope you liked some of the new stuff and changes that the 10th anniversary brought. I’d like to thank everyone who gave me feedback about it because you helped make things better here. I hope this place brings back memories about games you forgot about, introduced some new games to those who are just getting into the scene or let you know that you weren’t the only fan of that one game your friends scream on you for liking. It’s even more important now that many of these games can be downloaded and played again for just for the first time ever on a console like Konami’s X-Men. The updates in 2011 will be a bit farther apart but I still plan to bring the love of these games to the table and maybe finish one of those long-term projects I’ve been working on in bits and pieces. No promises on that. See you next year!

Surprise, ninjas! I’m playing Santa Claus by leaving a little toy-related update:

Yo Joe!Yo Joe!

It’s Christmas time so I’ve added a Toy and Cartoon character section to the Graphic Generators. It starts off with He-Man from Masters of the Universe, Lion-O from the Thundercats and various G.I.JOEs and Cobras. The Cobras and Joes have been collected into team-based character choices except for Snake-Eyes and Scarlett who get solo slots since they already had minilogos. I disliked the old Storm Shadow sprite so much that I threw a new one together and it appears in the Generators. Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow have optional palettes. There will be an update next week and you’ll see the new things from the generator added to the galleries. There is also a theme based on the early G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero figure card in the Group Maker. I know how crazy it is to have single character themes in the Group Maker but they’re just hanging out there until I have enough themes and fix a few things to create the Avatar maker.

Also: There’s a new sprite pack from the Sailor Moon game by Banpresto. These were ripped by Makron (thank you for giving me permission to host them) and it includes some recognizable characters that didn’t make it into the game. It’s not easy to compile things like that so please give Makron credit if you use them in a fan game.

Also, check out Illmosis to see a quick full-color Christmas pic I drew. It’s not game-related this year but you may like it. I’ll be back next week with another small update to wrap up the 10th Anniversary year.

This is just a small update

GFX Generators – The last update added the ability to pick options for certain backgrounds and I said something about future updates taking crazy advantage of that. I’m using the Slam Masters rings as a demonstration for that again. Having different backgrounds and Vs. fonts for the Slam Masters rings was just practice.

Vs. Maker screens:
Slam Masters series rings – Rings and crowds/bgs can now be mixed and more background parts from whole series were added.
X-Men: CotA Vs – Added a few stage preview options.

GroupShot screens:
X-Men: CotA “Moon Night” – with a few bg options.

Custom Sprites – Ken (known as Kevin in the Japanese version) from Street Fighter 2010 has been added to the Capcom page. I just couldn’t let this year slip by without making a sprite edit of him. I also updated the “Then and Now” page to compare the Johnny Storm and Superman sprites along with a more detailed progress chart for street-clothes Cody.

I also made a commissioned from-scratch sprite of a legendary comic book advertising hero and you can see that on the deviantART page in this link. Be sure to check out the work by man who commissioned the sprite!

Good news, everyone: Quartermaster is back with a new URL and highly-updated Capcom and SNK shrines! Shadi has done a ton of work on the shrines and they’re as informative as they are attractive. He doesn’t play favorites and put as much effort into the Black Tiger and Magic Sword shrines as he gives into pages of more well-known games. Please give the place a visit! I apologize that all of my links from here to the new URL aren’t fixed in this update but I’ll get that done as soon as I can.

GFX Generators – I figured that a superhero-related update for the generator needed one new style that both Marvel and DC could use and there was only one obvious choice.

Okay, it’s only obvious to other toy geezers like me. Most of you are too young to remember Mego’s World’s Greatest Super-Heroes toyline (see the Mego Museum site for details) but you may have seen the various tribute lines by Toy Biz, Kenner, Hasbro. Mattel is currently making DC figures with blister cards that mirror the old Mego packages that the new GroupShot screenstyle pays respect to. This lead to two new features for the generator engine. One simple addition is that the minilogos can now appear behind the sprite in some styles. The most important change is that screenstyles now have their own options on the second menu page under the sprite and palette options. The Mego style lets you choose a card color and whether you want the DC or Marvel head portraits on the side. This also let me combine a few older screenstyles that were just palette swaps like Apocalypse Now from X-Men vs. Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter or the two versions of SFA’s China stage. The Slammasters Ring now has a few different Ring and Vs. options from both games that you can mix and match parts like this:

Expect to see many more backgrounds take crazy advantage of this in future updates.

New characters: the Atom, Blue Beetle, Captain Cold, Deathstroke, Green Arrow, Robin, Power Girl, Supergirl, Human Torch, Invisible Woman, Mr. Fantastic, the Thing
Character updates: Batman, the Belmonts, Catwoman, Hulk, Iron Man, Joker, Rick Taylor (Splatterhouse), Spider-Man, Superman

GroupShot New screenstyles: Mego – World’s Greatest Super-Heroes
Vs.Maker Updated screenstyes: Slammasters rings (options with multiple ring backgrounds and Vs. graphic)

Custom Sprites
DC: Atoms Ray Palmer and Ryan Choi, Blue Beetle (Ted Kord), Deathstroke, Robin (Tim Drake), Supergirl, Superman
Marvel: the Human Torch (in both flame on and off modes), Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, Iron Man (two poses in the fan-favorite 4th armor) and the Thing
Konami: Simon Belmont – CV2 outfit
Namco: Rick Taylor – a slight variation to the Splatterhouse 3 sprite.

Minilogo – the Atom (1960s and ‘All-New’), Batman (1970), Captain Cold, Captain Marvel, Deathstroke, Green Arrow (’70s), Riddler (’70s) and Robin (’70s blocky), Supergirl (modern curved) logos added to the DC section. The Falcon, Hulk (’70s-80s angle logo), Human Torch, Invisible Woman added to the Marvel section. New color variants of Aquaman, Shazam and Superman logos added. These were added to the GFX Generator character files as well.

I planned to have more than this but I was worn out from Black Friday comic convention and lack of sleep. I hope this makes up for the lack of comic-related content in the 10th Anniversary update.

edit: Deathstroke was accidentally left out of both the Sprite Gallery and Graphic Generator uploads. I’d like to think Ryan Choi’s vengeful ghost made that happen. That’s been fixed so Slade can now cause kill off interesting characters on this site now. Hooray.

Comments Off on Thanksgiving Weekend update

November 23rd, 2010

First of all, the Splatterhouse revival game for the Playstation 3 and X-Box 360 is out today. Fans of Splatterhouse and blood-soaked horror in general should really consider giving the game a shot. They team worked hard to make a game that old-school fans would love and even includes the original arcade game and the Genesis/Mega Drive sequels as unlockable content. It looks like a revival game done the right way and that’s a rare, beautiful thing. But you don’t have to take my word for it…

Check out the official site if you haven’t kept up with it’s development.

I’m still working on this weekend’s update. Lots of new custom sprites, minilogos and GFX Generator features and additions are on the way and nearly all of it is comic-related. One new feature will make the GFX Generator backgrounds a bit more interesting.

November 9th, 2010

There are two reasons for this. The first is that I have paid artwork assignments to finish and I don’t have a lot of extra time to work on the site. The second is that I’d like a bit of time to actually play games again now that I have a PS3. The biggest reason is that I’d like to make a nice Thanksgiving weekend update and I’ll have the vacation days to do just that. The “Superhero” update I had planned will probably be scaled back and happen during this next update and will include that DC villain I have a preview shot of over there. Sorry for the wait but I’ll try to make up for it.

EDIT: (2010 November 14, 3:24 AM) – I just noticed that the so-called improvements I made to the GFX Generators in the last update also glitched up the minilogo screenstyles in the Vs. Maker. That is now fixed and I apologize for the errors.
