This Revenge of 1989 update, celebrating the year that many of this site’s favorite games were released, may not have a lot of new sprites, but it definitely has big sprites to make up for it!

Custom Sprites
Final Fight: Completely redone sprites of Mike Haggar, fight stance and hands on hips, in a hopefully better style added.
Golden Axe: Red Dragon, Blue Dragon (and Tyris Flare riding both) and Chicken Leg (edited from the 2018 Chicken Stinger sprite) added, along with adding sub-galleries for many characters

All new custom sprites were added to the GFX Image Generators!

Also updated

Sprites: Golden Axe gallery (GA1 arcade beasts, heroes on beasts and items)

Getting the new computer finished a few months ago made me want to experiment with different ways of making sprites, and the main new sprites were originally drawn in Clip Studio (instead of the pencil-paper-sometimes ink scans I usually make) before being shrunken to sprite size. Had to make adjustments to the ride/bizarrian Dragon after shrinking, but it’s pretty close:

I also wanted a better, unified set of sprites for Haggar for September’s Beat ‘Em Up Showcase (preview here), so I used Clip Studio trace my old sprites of him at 1000%.

I made changes after I shrank and made pixel art of the first two poses, along with drawing the head at pixel size, so I’ll bring those new sprites into the CS file, adjust the lines to fit the sprites for reference for future sprites, like Haggar’s arms up pose from the old Final Fight artwork.

I’ve done other experiments, but I’ll post about them later.

I used to say that it never feels like I’ve been doing this for more than 10 years, but after a year as crappy and time-distorted as 2020, it feels like I’ve been going for 15 years now. You may notice that this update is heavy on beat ’em up (a.k.a. belt scroll), and you’ll see why in a bit. For now, here’s the newness:

Custom Sprites
Bad Dudes: new sprites of Animal (+ Zombie Animal) and Hage Ninja
Battletoads (new separate gallery): Pimple (finally completing the playable trio)
Double Dragon: redone DDA stance Billy and Jimmy Lee (replacing the ones from the 20th ScrollBoss anniversary), classic stance Billy, Jimmy and Jeff
Kunio-kun: Misuzu (SD style)
Mega Man: new scratch-made MvC style Mega Man in Rockman Famicom cover art pose.
Rushing Beat: New Lord J taunt, and improved fight stance sprite, improved Douglas Bild stand sprite
Streets of Rage: new Max Thunder sprite (back turned) in SoR 2 and 4 designs
Undercover Cops: The Zan (Claude) sprite I teased in the gallery icon since January is done and in the gallery, along with Matt, completing the playable crew!
Marvel Comics: Black Widow (semi-remake of an old sprite edit pose), Crossbones (boss in DECO’s Captain America and the Avengers), Firestar (assist char in Maximum Carnage, but not in this outfit)
– DC Comics: Green Lantern Hal Jordan (scratch-made remake of the edit-based pose I made for him 20 years ago)
G.I.JOE: all-new Baroness fight stance (referencing her old sprite edit pose from the early days of this site)

Mini-logos
Marvel Comics: Crossbones (Captain America #363 cover), the Defenders
Capcom: Shadaloo (SCRI logo) and Street Fighter x Tekken

All new sprites and mini-logos have been added to the Graphics Generators, along with the brand-new (and long overdue) Beat ‘Em Up arcade background!

The “Memory Lane” page was updated for the first time in almost 10 years, mainly trimming a few things down and adding info on the image generators and videos.

Thanks to an incredibly kind Ko-Fi donation, I put enough money together to buy the latest version of MOHO (Anime Studio)! For the first time in half a year, I have access to all that old work I did for videos again, so I can get back to those video Works-in-Progress. Being without AS Pro 10 had one positive effect, because it forced me to dig deeper into using Blender (even if it’s the pre-2.80 version with the old Blender engine) and building the clips inside Vegas (instead of just using it as a clip assembler). All of those things will be used for the next Sprite Showcade:

Just in time for his debut in Smash, an all-new sprite in CvS-ish of Kazuya Mishima has been added to the Tekken custom sprite gallery and the image generators!

The 21st anniversary of the ScrollBoss site’s birth is on July 19th, 2021, and I’m working on new sprites (and more) for the anniversary update!

Back in late April, I finally finished the new system I’ve been buying parts for since mid-2020.

The old to the new

Trusty old system on the left, sparkly new system on the right.

This is the first PC I ever built from start to finish. Thankfully I bought my CPU, a Ryzen 5 3400G, last year, because you know how prices on anything graphics-related went and stayed through the roof. Still need another 8GB of RAM, but I’ve already got old program and games running at speeds and visual settings higher than I’ve ever seen.

I re-rendered a sprite display clip (Iron Man in the Hall of Armor background) in Blender on the new system in minutes instead of the hour+ it took back in January on my older system. Still need to install Vegas on the new system, but I expect video renders to pop off at similar ludicrous speeds. Still have to find my installation disc for Anime Studio 10 Pro and check into whether or not that program works in Windows 10, because the only update that’ll work for that programs permanently locks it to that computer (change of ownership, long story). I hope this means I can make more videos once I get all this straightened out.

Posted on other sites, forgot to post it here on “National Superhero Day”

Someone commented that I should make a print like this. If you agree, let me know, because this version was super-rushed after work (forgot to put Thor and some others in there).

My drawing hand feels better, but not great. I did a little pixel work last week to ease back into the groove.

heads-up: BigBadToyStore has some Storm Collectables back in stock, including those Golden Axe 2 skeletons: Page right here. Shout out to Preternia for the alert on Twitter!

It’s Alien day (named after mission LV-426 from the original Alien film) and here are some small additions to the Alien vs. Predator parts of the site:
Sprites: I finally went back and got idle sprites for all the weapons (that I know about), including the pipe found on the elevator, added some enemies and enemy palettes.
Game Index: fixed up some things and added the Round titles.
Character Profiles: Major Dutch Schaefer, Lt. Linn Kurosawa, Predator Hunter, Predator Warrior.

Also, I’ve still got that print in the shop:

Alien vs. Predator pixel art print

New River City Ransom/Kunio-Kun NES custom sprites of Dottie and Pee-Wee Herman (Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure), Dante (Clerks), Cheap Pete (Chris Rock), Alucard and Simon Belmont (Castlevania series), and Kiryu Kazuya (Yakuza series) have been added to that gallery and to the Shop generator, which also has two new shops: the Quick Stop from Clerks (and other fine View Askew products) and Chuck’s Bike-o-Rama (Pee Wee’s Big Adventure)!

edit: also (finally) added the scratch-made Lionel Ritchie sprite that appears in the upside down versions of the main index page and one of the April Fools main menu headers to the Music gallery.

I promised a ToyBoss/Toybox section update a while back, so here it isn’t. It’s here, but not everything I’d planned to do yet. I’ve added a few new photos, the beginning of section for how much of a game’s roster I have right now, and links to the toy-related custom sprite galleries. I also added links to toy sellers and/or makers I’ve ordered from and have seen that they won’t try to swindle you (unless you specifically order that Combaticon, then they’ll actually sell him to you).

One of those makers sells a dream-come-true item, the Articulated Icons line. the 1:12 scale (think Marvel Legends, DC Universe classics, most Storm Collectables figures) martial arts line, now famous for their Godfrey Ho-esque array of ninjas in various colors. I mentioned these figures a while back when I ordered my first ninja, a gray one that I will eventually customize into Sega’s Joe Musashi in his Genesis-era Shinobi gear. Now I’ve got 3 Brown ninja, Shokan in White ninja outfit, and a bare arms accessory pack (and I’ll be getting more).

They’re built for customization, so you can pop out the arms at the shoulder and switch ’em. They’re also super-poseable, so they’re good for drawing reference, too. They’ve got a sale going on for many of their figures, so jump on it while the jumping’s good!

Now that I’m kinda on break right now, I’ll be taking and posting more figure pics. I’ve been rebuilding after the loss of most of my Marvel Legends collection last June, and so I’m taking way more photos now instead of waiting for every roster to be 100%, being able to put together a really good set-up, or having a good camera. More toy section updates are on the way!

April Fools Day is tomorrow, and I’ll be adding some things to the image generators so you can make your own screenshots (along with the one-day return of the April Fools Day index pic on the start page).

“But I’m not even supposed to be here today!”

The first ever Superhero Sprite Showcade is up on ScrollBoss YouTube channel:

A huge thanks to AVPboy for letting me include that excellent CPS-2 sound remake of the Genesis/Mega Drive Batman’s first stage BGM! It sounds so good that I went back and sprited two thugs from that level that you saw in the first Batman clip.

The last two Superhero Sprite Showcases that people voted for last year are finally here in the same video, making it a Sprite Showcade, along with some bonus material at the end. I’m still locked out of my Anime Studio Pro 10 install, so the new clips were done with Blender, Magix Vegas, and combinations of both (like that quick panning shot with Iron Man, Hawkeye and Cap). The “pixel cover” format that made its debut in last month’s video are in this one, including tributes to some real comic covers. You’ll also see some sprites you haven’t seen before that aren’t in the sprite galleries or generators just yet.

DC Comics: Batman,Joker
Marvel: Iron Man and Whirlwind
EDIT 2020-03-27: Titanium Man added to the Marvel Gallery

All new sprites have been added to the GFX Generators! Whirlwind and Titanium Man are in the “Marvel Villains” character slot.

Still trying to take a bit of a break and give my drawing/spriting hand some rest, but still putting time in the lab, too.

Custom Sprites – Marvel: Storm (scratch remake of her Capcom Children of the Atom idle pose) and Monica Rambeau (resprited the pose inspired by Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16 by John Romita Sr. and Jr.)
Custom Sprites – DC: DC: Bronze Tiger

mini-logo – DC: Bronze Tiger

All new logos added to the GFX Generators, where you can make graphics and fake screenshots like the one at the top of this post

Been experimenting in the lab with more video stuff, too, including an old idea I had for comic cover style clips for the Superhero Sprite Showcases/Showcades. Those clips were done in right in Magix Vegas because I don’t have my Anime Studio Pro 10 issues fixed yet. Since it’s Black History Month, it’s all Black Superheroes, and I’ll eventually do a full vid of this in the future.

Congratulations!

Before the greatest game sequel of all time debuted, I had a Karate Champ-shaped hole in my soul because nothing really matched the one-on-one hype people had playing that. If you know the area where I grew up, the Fast Lane corner store had a Karate Champ coin-op there for a long time). The years passed and co-op games with a bit of competition had pretty much eclipsed Vs. game play in titles like Mario Bros. (original recipe, not Super), Gauntlet, Double Dragon, and Final Fight (which Capcom almost called Street Fighter ’89). When Street Fighter II hit, the combination of solid game play, amazing graphics and memorable characters had people hype about it, including people I didn’t even know were into games at the time. The mall arcades here weren’t dead at the time, but SFII definitely brought a lot of new life to them. I have so many great memories of playing this game and the rest of the series with friends, fam, and arcade heads waaay before online play became standard. Thanks to everyone who worked on the game!
