In case you hadn’t heard, the Treachery in Beatdown City Kickstarter campaign was a success! The tactical brawler that’s part-beat ’em up and part-RPG will be finished and see the light of day. Congratulations to everyone in the Nuchallenger on being rewarded for all the hard work you’ve put into the project!

Updates will be small and far apart until after July 6th, the 2014 All-Americon convention in Warren, Ohio. My artist’s table has already been paid for, new line art is on the way and I’ll have prints for sale again. Stop by my table even if you don’t want to buy anything, because I’ll have some pixel art previews again. Getting ready for the show is going to take a lot of work, so I need to concentrate on that for a while. I can’t promise a big site anniversary update on July 19th, but I’ll do what I can to make it fun.

I apologize for the large gap between this and the last update, but I hurt my back at work a few weeks ago and the irritation was distracting enough to making site and sprite work difficult. My hit points are aren’t back to 100% just yet, but enough that I can get back to pixel and line art duties again.

The Kickstarter campaign for Treachery in Beatdown City is in its final week and still needs your help!

The game is a beat ’em up with tactical rpg elements and an 8-bit spirit. You can still walk and brawl in the streets of East Fulton, but powerful attacks are dealt out though quick menus, and more devastating moves can be learned from NPC’s. This game brings a lot of new ideas to the table and I’m really hoping that it gets funded. Besides, I can’t front on a game with an attack called “Dusty Elbow,” the kind of move done by the son of a plumber (if you will).

There are still some $12 early bird pledge slots available, so jump on it while you can and if you have the money to do so. Spread the word if you like what Nuchallenger is laying down by letting people know about the Kickstarter!

April O’Neil was added to the TMNT gallery and Emma Frost (the White Queen) was added to the Marvel gallery. Both characters have been added to the VS Maker and GroupShot GFX Generators. Speaking of the generators…

All four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles now have SFA3 portraits.

One more thing:

the improved Detective Comics #27 sprite is now in the DC Gallery.

edit: along with forgetting to mention that I’d updated the Crime Fighters entry in the Game Index last week, this week’s update adds a few more sprites, including the third boss’ intro and the seventh boss’ tribute to Platoon.

Custom Sprites
Konami: Crime Fighters hero added along with mohawk and domme enemies.
Capcom: Final Fight’s heavyweights added.
Taito: Tony Gibson (Crime City) added.

Mini-Logos
– Astro City: Astro City, Samaritan
– Marvel: Captain America (’80s)
– Sunsoft: Tough Turf
– Taito: FairyLand Story
– Illmosis Network: The Revenge of 1989

GFX Generators – The new mini-logos were added to their proper characters (Capt. America, Ptolemy, Samaritan) and the following characters were added:
– Konami: Crime Fighters and Crime Fighters – Enemies (with two drone enemies)
– Capcom: Wong Who, G.Oriber, Bill Bull added to Mad Gear thugs
– Taito: Tony Gibson (Crime City) added

Bad News: those portrait/s I teased on Tumblr over a week ago aren’t in this update.
Good News: I saved them for a semi-themed update for next week. They’ll appear along with a very timely sprite. You’ll also see a better version of the sprite in this post added to the site then, too.

Breakin’ News

Treachery in Beatdown City, the tactical beat ’em up with an 8-bit look, has been relaunched on Kickstarter, so help out if you can!

First, it’ll be a while before there’s an update as I get my new PC system set-up together. I’ve got the basics set up right now, but I still have a lot of things to re-install, program compatibilities to test, etc. While I have some new material done (including some new 1989-related scratch-made sprites and portraits), it’s not enough for a decent update. Sorry for the delay and I’ll be back to slinging pixels in early April.

I made a quick group of articles in late 2009 called, “The Revenge of 1989” to talk about game-related things of that year. 2009 was the 20th anniversary of that year and, even then, I was plotting to make sure I’d have something decent to show for the 25th anniversary. There will be multiple updates this year to do just that and this update starts with a revamp of the original articles and a little something extra.

Why am I celebrating this year so much? That video is only a hint at how many of the things this site celebrates just happened to have been made in 1989. So consider the next ten months a party as, from this day until December 31st, 2014, this site will try to give 1989 some long overdue respect. New articles will be added (including a series of awards), new sprites will be made of that year’s characters (I think it’s time I finally sprited the rest of the original Mad Gear gang) and more random crap that I can’t hint at. There will be still be non-1989 themed updates, but those games will be the focus of the year. Here are the other things you can find in this week’s update.

Custom Sprites – Kunio-Kun added to the Technos gallery. Grandmaster Meio added to the Capcom gallery. Raymond Broady (Crime City) added to the Taito gallery. Alex Kidd and Kasumi (the Revenge of Shinobi) added to the Sega gallery.

Game Index
– Added: Mega Man 2 (NES)
– Updated: Crime City (arcade)

SpritesCrime Fighters gallery updated with a lot of sprites and a few minor animations.

Mini-logos – the Revenge of Shinobi added to Sega section, Crime City added to Taito section.

GFX Generators – Guy and Cody were updated with a few SFA sprites and sprite edits. Here’s how the new scratch-made sprites look.

Alex Kidd, Grandmaster Meio, Raymond Broady were added to the Vs. and Group generators, Kasumi’s sprite was added to the Zeed/Neo Zeed char slot and Kunio was updated with his new sprite. Check out the goofy thing I just added to the Vs. generator, though:

It’s the Janken battle stage from Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle. Now you can set up your own Rock-Paper-Scissors battles. I’ve made all three Janken poses for Alex Kidd, but you’ll have to use your own memory to figure out the other characters who, like Ken, have win poses similar to rock, paper or scissors.

That’s all for this update. While some of these updates might be far apart, know that some I’m putting extra time into this while working on some other neglected projects. Feel free to leave a comment about your own favorite video games from 1989.

A few enemies from 1988 games have hit the site: Giant Soldier (Capcom’s Bionic Commando) and Emperor Zaas (Taito’s Superman arcade game). They’ve been added to the GFX Generators and the Custom Sprite Capcom and DC galleries.

Mini-Logos – Alex Kidd (in Miracle World and Enchanted Castle styles) added to Sega section. and Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari added to Technos section.

Logos – Added a bunch of Alex Kidd logos, the SMS Double Dragon logo and Blaster Master (NES)

Game Index – Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari (Famicom), Dragon’s Crown (PS3) added, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle (Genesis), River City Ransom (NES) updated.

Company Index – Atlus added.

Things are moving slowly these days because I’ve got quite a few things in the lab that I can’t show right away. Here’s a sneak preview:

I’ve been working on an improved version of that section and it’ll hit the site in early February.

BTW: I updated my DC & Marvel LittleBigPlanet 2 item giveaway level. I added some new items I’d made a while ago and forgot to add, including a Lex Luthor symbol much like the better one in the new DC Comics DLC pack. I used new items from that pack to make the level look a bit better, too.

Merry Christmas! Here’s a tiny update with two toys: Pizzazz, leader of the Misfits from Jem and the Holograms, and B. P. Vess from COPS. They’re in the Cartoons and Toys Custom Sprite gallery and in the GFX Generators, where Gilius gets a “Santa Gilius” palette. Have a Merry Christmas or whatever holiday you celebrate!

My big plans for the Halloween update were cut short by commission work. One of the sprites that you’d have seen in October would have been Jason Voorhees, inspired by the fact that NECA went crazy and made a SDCC exclusive glow-in-the-dark figure colored like the NES sprite. The weird part is that someone e-mailed me to ask if I had a Jason sprite without knowing I’d planned to do one. Unfortunately, I ran out of time, so I didn’t do it. Then I decided to check and see if there was a Friday the 13th before the year was over and, sure enough, there is. So instead of just having Jason show up on Halloween, he’s here on his own special day. If that wasn’t enough, I’ve got new sprites of other hockey mask-wearing characters, including a new Rick Taylor sprite. This is Splatterhouse’s 25th anniversary year, so things just worked out just right.

GFX Generators
New Characters: Jason Voorhees (pt. 3 sprite, two palettes), Casey Jones (TMNT), Ninja Gaiden enemies (the hockey mask-wearing enemy with multiple palettes)
Updated Characters: Rick Taylor (new scratch-made Splatterhouse 1 standing pose), Jennifer (improved sprite, brown palette)

Custom Sprites – Splatterhouse’s Rick and Jen were added to the Namco page, Jason was added to the new Movie-related gallery, Casey was added to the TMNT page and that hockey mask guy from Ninja Gaiden was added to the Tecmo page.

Breakin’ News

The U.S. Playstation store has quite a few Capcom games and items on sale on the cheap tip. The Dungeons and Dragons compilation, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Marvel vs. Capcom Origins are $7.49, $3.49 if you have Playstation Plus. Spelunky has the same $3.49/$7.49 price scheme, too. The PS3 and Vita versions of Dragon’s Crown, my favorite game of the year, is on sale for $29.99, too. Jump on that while the gettin’ good.

EDIT: News hit this weekend that Capcom will be de-listing Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and all MvsC3 and Ultimate MvsC3 items (DLC) from PSN and X-Box live very soon. You only have until the next PSN Store update to get those things and Live users have a bit longer. Read about it on Capcom-Unity.

Good Old Games (gog.com), home of non-DRM computer gaming, has a gigantic sale going on that I’m not even going to try and list. You just need to check it out A.S.A.P. if you’re interested.

Before I go into the update, I’m just letting you know that the Project Sen Kickstarter still needs help with less than three days to go.

GFX Generators

Sen, the star of Project Sen, joins the generator, along with Betty, one of the three starter warriors from Sega’s Gain Ground. The good guys from Bad Dudes, Blade and Striker, have all-new sprites (not Guile/Cody edits like the earlier stuff). SNK’s Ryuhaku Todoh and Hon-Fu were quietly added to the generator a while back when I was doing some behind-the scenes work on the character files.

Custom Sprites – Two new scratch-made Bad Dudes sprites added to the Data East gallery. Gain Ground’s Betty was added to the Sega Gallery.

Game Index – Gain Ground (arcade), Ghouls ‘n Ghosts (arcade), Kuri Kinton (arcade) added.

Logo Index – Gain Ground (arcade static and animated) added.

Arcade Quartermaster had a big update (new Mortal Kombat II and Virtua Fighter shrines), so check out the newness there, along with the updated shrines (including the MK I shrine)!

Siliconera has been posting translations of interviews with the M2 team about their work on Sega’s 3D Remaster series for the Nintendo 3DS. Anyone who thought those games were just cheaply-modified emulations will learn that the project is quite the opposite by reading these interviews. The latest one is about Sonic the Hedgehog, but one of the more interesting ideas in the interview is the Giga Drive. What is it? I’m not telling you jack squat, because I couldn’t do the idea justice. Just read the article!
