Not a dream, not a hoax and not not an imaginary story: the GFX Generator v.2 test with the Marvel Super Heroes Vs. screen is now on the site! It’s a test and a few things don’t work, but the new portrait palettes feature is up and running. Everything in it uses different data files from the main Vs. Maker generator and only has a few characters, but each one is guaranteed to have everything (mainly compatible portraits) they need to fake a decent Vs. screen from MSH. Besides modding a lot of old portraits to work with with the palette feature, there are two new portraits:

Superman’s portrait is from the Dan Jurgens/Brett Breeding art for Superman #73’s cover, Samus Aran’s portrait is based on art from official art for Metroid II and both feature multiple palettes. There won’t be alt palettes for all portraits and one major reason is mentioned in this post. The short version: portrait palettes are usually a pain to make.

Another update? Hey, I’ve got to make up for all that lost time, right? RIGHT.

New scratch-made sprites of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman have been added to the DC custom sprite gallery and the GFX Generators. There aren’t a lot of costume variations this time, but I’ll eventually make them.

Anyone who hasn’t been here in a while should check out the update from a few days ago, especially they’re a fan of Double Dragon.

edit (2016-03-26)

Wonder Woman update, including three added outfits!

I’m done (mostly) with the commission I was working on, so the site is back in active mode. Between Double Dragon’s announced return as a fighting game mode in the upcoming Kunio-Kun game and Hardcore Gaming 101 deepening their articles on the Double Dragon series throughout March, I figure the 22nd day of this month would be perfect.

Custom Sprites – the Double Dragon series finally gets its own custom sprite gallery and new sprites of both Billy and Jimmy Lee, Marian, and Linda. You might have seen the Lee Brothers’ sprites in some preview .GIFs, but I’ve tuned them up a bit since then. I also improved the earlier sprites of Williams and Roper a bit and their out on the streets, too. All of that newness is also in the GFX Generators with a lot of palettes. I’m not done with the Double Dragon characters, so expect more redone sprites, different outfits and added characters soon.

I’ve wanted to rewrite the GFX Generator engine for a while so I could add things that the current version can’t do. It’s been a side project since last year and you’ll finally start to see some early versions of it this Spring. I made a blog post to talk a bit about that new version, including why part of it almost drove me insane (well, more than usual).

The #GameAudioGDC Bundle – Part 2 is a free 10 GB download of high-quality and royalty free (a.k.a. hassle free) sound effects suitable for video games and videos. They’re from packs sold by Sonniss, so that’s only the tip of the iceberg of what they have to offer.

Steam has RPG Maker VX Ace for 90% off!, so any game makers may want to check that out.

Crowdfund round-up:

Moira – a magical adventure with a look inspired by classic GameBoy games and the heart of an SNES action/adventure game!

I’m still working on a commission, but I had time here and there to get some pixel work done. Check it out!

Custom Sprites: DC (Amanda Waller), Marvel (new scratch-made Black Panther, in a pose similar to the old sprite edit), Video System Co. (Glen from Karate Blazers)
Logos: Karate Blazers (ripped from tiles for accuracy with the black pixels)
Mini-Logos: DC (Amanda Waller), Marvel (Jean Grey), Video System Co. (Video System, Karate Blazers)

All applicable newness has been added to the GFX Generators.

I always feel like I’ve done a good job on a sprite if WizzyWhipitWonderful picks it to display during those CPS-2-style music tracks and this is no exception. Check out this new hype track done by WizzyWhipitWonderful (composed by Antoine Pickens of LiveWire Productions):

Be sure to subscribe to WWW’s YouTube channel for continued exposure to that sweet, sweet CPS-2 audio flavor!

My commission work should be finished some time in March (at the latest), so expect the next batch of newness then.

The site will be going on a short pause for a while, but this update is here to give you a taste of what you’ll be seeing this year.

More games and game series will get their own custom sprite gallery pages, like Streets of Rage did in this update. Axel, Blaze, Max and Electra have new sprites to kick off that new gallery page. Meanwhile, Kung-Fu Master’s Thomas’ new scratch-made sprite and Jose from Ninja Baseball Bat Man hit the IREM gallery. I doubt that I’ll be able to have ALL the old sprite edits replaced with scratch-made work this year, but I plan to come close to it. These things, along with two IREM-related minilogos, have been added to the GFX Generators.

I have a lot of things to work on during the site pause. I have a commission assignment I’ve been working on, a new version of the GFX Generators (see this Tumblr post for details), and more things like this:

I plan to finally knock the dust off of the ScrollBoss YouTube channel this year and part of my January has been spent working on material.

Zweifuss, sprite ripper and creator of that massive Street Fighter III: Third Strike site, needs help renewing the site for another year. Please donate to the cause if you can, especially if the site has helped you. Any SFIII stuff you see on my site, including sprite edits that started as SFIII sprites, come from his rips

Shout out to Jessica for the feedback https://quitday.org/ and http://www.ffsonline.org for the link help!
(edit: links deactivated, don’t seem to be what they used to be anymore)

I’ll still be active on Tumblr and Twitter, posting stuff like this:

To quote Guru, “Peace out. We’ll be back. Stay tuned.”

edit: I was going to save this clip until later, but, as ol’ Jack Burton says, what the hell…

This is just a small update to fix a few things I didn’t like or add minor things I didn’t have enough time to make for earlier updates.

DC Comics: Green Lantern Hal Jordan’s sprite
Sega: Adam Hunter (Streets of Rage/ Bare Knuckle)
Movies: Pamela Voorhees (played by the late, great Betsy Palmer)

Mini-logos: Friday the 13th (part 1, with the bloody 13), Child’s Play, Evil Dead and Evil Dead II in the fancy font style were added to the Movies gallery

All these things have been added to the GFX Generators so you can make your own fake screenshots and other graphics with them.

I put most of the fighting-scale sprites I made in 2015 into a single pic. You won’t see all of the variants, nor will you see all the animation frames, the secret sprites I made for future projects (looks shifty) or commissions. It’s still a crapload of sprites, though. Click on the pic below to see a bigger version:

Plans for 2016? I’m working on the overhaul for the GFX Generators (got sprite placement working a few days ago, will be back at it this weekend) and hope to get those done for spring 2016. The small videos on the YouTube channel were just practice and 2016 will be showtime. There WILL be more pixel art prints for me to peddle. Still replacing edits with fresh scratch-made sprites.

Be sure to check out the 2015 wrap-up site posts from Shinju Forest and VGJunk!

Take care, have a Happy New Year and thanks again for checking out the site!

Seeing as how it’s Christmas Eve, I thought it’d be a great time for an update with toy sprites!

New sprites of Evil-Lyn, Scarlett, He-Man, Jem, Lion-O, Grunt, and Faker have been added to the Toys and Cartoon and G.I.JOE galleries, along with the GFX Generators (where you’ll see even more palettes for Scarlett and Grunt). I also fixed the sprite of G.I.JOE’s “Flash” Gambello, because he was far too short.

BTW: Steelheart and Cyborg were going to be part of this, repping SilverHawks and Super Powers respectively, but I used them in the Cyber Week updates so the site wouldn’t be going so long without updates. Don’t worry, you won’t have to wait until next Christmas to get more toy-related sprites here…

the Night City Assault beat ’em up Kickstarter only has a few days and is halfway to its goal, so check out the campaign, try out the playable demo and help it out if you can!

Merry Christmas!

Disappointed in the lack of cybernetics I saw on Cyber Monday, I’ve decided to try and make up for that by celebrating cyber-related characters and games for the entire week. Check back with this post for updates every day!

Tuesday:

Cyborg, in classic flavor, is now in the DC Comics gallery and GFX Generators (where he has extra palettes)!

Wednesday:

A new sprite of Kamaitachi from Ninja Warriors Again (from the beautifully developed SNES/SFAM game by Natsume) has been added to the Taito gallery and GFX Generators (where the Mego WGS style in the GroupShot generator finally has a Taito character bubble set)! Kunoichi (my old version of her need to be redone) and Ninja won’t show up in this theme, but they’re on my to-sprite list.

Thursday:

Welcome your new cyborg gang overlord, Martha from Technos’ beat ’em up, Combatribes. She’s been added to the Technos gallery and GFX Generators along with two versions of the Combatribes logo has been added to the mini-logo page.

Friday:

Partly pixels, partly real, a new sprite of Steelheart, from the SilverHawks cartoon and toyline, has been added to the Toys and Cartoons gallery and the GFX Generators! The SilverHawks logo has been added to the Toys and Cartoons mini-logo gallery.

Reminder: the prints in the shop are on sale until this Sunday, November 6th. 8×10 and 8×11 prints are $4.50 each while the 11 x 17 prints $8.50 each. There’s a wider variety of prints on the Illmosis site print page, so check that out, too!

First, let’s wrap up November’s business.

I planned to make a bunch of sprites based on my own characters to celebrate the main Illmosis site’s anniversary month, but a lot of things got in the way. The biggest is that I wanted to redesign many of the characters I was going to sprite. Two of those characters made it through, though: Exponent and Hostyle. Along with a new sprite of Nutroll, they kick off the long overdue Illmosis character section in the Illmosis gallery. You’ll also see a lot of sprites that were only on the Illmosis site until now. The out-of-scale Endless Duck sprite from 2011 was finally added to the ScrollBoss section, too.

I’ve also made a new SFA3 portrait for Karnov to replace the old E.Honda-edited version to rep Karnovember a bit more.

Finally, the prints in the shop are on sale until this Sunday, November 6th. 8×10 and 8×11 prints are $4.50 each while the 11 x 17 prints $8.50 each. Anyone looking for a wider variety of prints should check the Illmosis site print page, because it goes beyond the video game theme of this site.

Cyber Week will continue with… actual cyborgs? Word! BUT WHO? Even more mysteriously, which characters will segue into another round of themed updates later this month? No one really cares, but stay tuned anyway!

Friends, it’s that time of year when we give thanks to someone who has brought so much joy into our lives and made us the people we are today. This man has given so much, but always asked for much more in return. So let’s celebrate gaming’s favorite fire-breathing, Tyrannosaurus Rex-beating strongman and master of cameos, Karnov! Be sure to check out the Karnovember on Tumblr to see more Karnov appreciation!

I’ve improved the “Karnov: Bad Dudes stance” I made last year and added outfits from Fighter’s History and his cameo in Street Hoops. These sprites have been added to the Data East gallery and GFX Generators. A Karnov’s Revenge-style Karnov logo and the Fighter’s History mini-logos have been added to the Data East mini-logo page.

edit: I don’t know why I kept referring to Street Hoop as Street Hoops, but I’ll clear that up in the other parts of the site once I get the chance.
