18 years ago, I started this site with at the public library with Tripod’s free site builder, screenshots from the PC version of Sega’s Smash Pack (made on a friend’s computer, didn’t even have my own PC yet), and a bunch of tips and tricks I’d scrawled in a notebook. Seemed like it’d be a fun thing to do on the internet. Multiple hosting moves and weird ideas later.

The theme of today’s update is… every theme, including the lack of a theme. Characters from games, a few from comics, some 1989 icons (to rep the Revenge of 1989), an obvious crossover face-off (outside of Crossup Beatdown), a horror villain (before October’s DangerTerrorHorrorThon), an eighties cartoon character (before the usual Toy and Cartoon update near Christmas), a new original character for the site and the return of a character born in the long defunct Minus World section. It’s like a Whitman’s chocolate assortment of this site’s usual habits, so here’s the map that lets you avoid that one weird cream candy that makes you scrunch up in the face.

Custom Sprite additions
Bomberman: all-new Bomberman action pose
Final Fight: Cody (Street Fighter V stance)
Megaman: Bombman
Shinobi series: Joe Musashi (Revenge of Shinobi title screen)

All new sprites have been added to the main GFX Generator where you can make your own pics and fake screenshots! Other things added to the generators today:
– characters added: KoF Sports team added, Mojo (Marvel)
– characters updated: Mai Shiranui

While I’m at it, all prints on the site are on sale until the end of the month!

all 8 x 10/ 8.5 x 11 on the site are now $4!

11×17 inch prints are $8!

That’s the main part of the update. Some small preview additions to the Vs. Horror pt. 2 pixel print, an unfinished promo video and a thank you message are behind the cut. So, if you don’t read that, I’ll put an extra “Thank you” here to let you know that you’re appreciated!

“You see, Jason was my son… and today is his birthday…”

Just a bit of pixel art to hold you over until next week!

As posted earlier this week on the main Illmosis site, I finally drew new inked artwork of classic-era Mega Man!

That new Mega Man pic has just been added to the prints area of the shop page!

The Youngstown Comic Con takes place at Youngstown, Ohio’s Covelli Center next weekend, July 7th and 8th! In case you’ve missed the earlier site posts here, I’ll be in Artist Alley again, but, sadly, only on Sunday the 8th.

Don’t worry, it’s not just about comic books, as a lot of the other artists and vendors will have video game merch, and there’s always tons of video game cosplay going on. In fact, some of my earnings last year didn’t make it out of the building because I bought a loose copy of Gauntlet IV for the Genesis!

I’ll have a lot of the prints you see on the site along with the mini pixel art prints that I only have at conventions:

They’re only $1 each and… hmmm… a few seem to have a some sprites and backgrounds that aren’t on the site yet. Yes, a few of ’em find their way into future site updates.

Arcade Quartermaster just dropped its July update with a trio of beat ’em up shrines: Legionnaire, P.O.W. and, a personal favorite of mine, Karate Blazers!

That’s all for now. See you in July!

I need to work on new prints to be ready for the Youngstown Comic-Con (I’ll only have a table there on the Sunday the 8th), so ScrollBoss will be KINDA quiet until after the convention. Conveniently, this site’s 18th anniversary will hit a little over a week after that. There will probably be small updates here and there, especially when I get pixel art or game-related prints done.

Until next time, here are a few previews:

The long-awaited Raging Justice is out now! I bought it for PC/Steam and had fun playing it. There are tons of nice little combat touches, including knocking characters into the background, enemy arrests (with bonus points for catching foes who have warrants out for them). No, it’s not a stat-building, free-roaming game like a lot of other modern Walk ‘n Brawls, but I know a lot of other people who prefer arcade-length games; the can be played through with a visiting friend and short enough for a non-marathon stream. Check this out if that sounds like your kind of party!

Time for a mini-update! New Kunio-kun/River City Ransom style sprites of Mary Jane Watson, Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong have been added to the custom sprite gallery and the image generator. Shout-out to artist the Dopest Robot for the idea! I also added one of the most important shopkeepers of all time: Fred G. Sanford, owner of the Sanford and Son Salvage empire.

BTW: there was an update a few days ago with some Superman-related sprites.

This is update is mostly themeless, but it’s also on the day that Action Comics #1000 hits the stands, so there’s a bit of Metropolis flavor in there.

DC Comics: Superman (Action Comics #1 interior and Kingdom Come battle hover), Black Lightning, Lex Luthor (battle armor), and Toyman (Superfriends version).
Mini-logos: Mario added to Nintendo, Scorpion, Kitana and Cage added to Williams/Midway, Toyman added to DC Comics

GFX Generators (Fighter scale): Avengers 2018 and X-Men 2017 have been added to the Marvel Legends box tribute. Of course, all new sprites and mini-logos have been added to this generator, too.

VGJunk site celebrated its 8th anniversary by making and sharing a visual novel!

Arcade Quartermaster’s new shrines for the month are Arabian Fight, Arabian Magic and Cannon Dancer/Osman!

RageQuitter’s Earnest Evans series shrine was updated with more info!

I planned to have a small update this week, but I’ve got some line art to make for someone. Still, I figured this would be the perfect day to show a preview from the next Vs. Horror print. No surprises here…

The sprites in this print will have a slightly different shading style and won’t stick so closely to the 16-color limit of older sprites. Don’t expect to see those exact sprites added to the sprite galleries or generators, at least not for a long time after the print debuts.

Do expect to see an update with things being added to the galleries and image generators next week, though. Hold tight until then!

The only April Fool’s trick involving the site happened to me yesterday when I thought I’d spend the whole time making 8-bit style sprites. HA! You’ll read about that in a bit.

GFX Generators – The oft-neglected Fake Screenshot generator (with 8-bit graphics) gets some love today. I spent much of yesterday untangling a bug in the engine that messed up font selections on a few screens (esp. the Mega Man boss intros). I also added sprites to:

– Custom 8-bit sprites: Dr. Bones McCoy, Dr. Herbert West, Dr. Clayton Forrester, Dr. Giggles. They were meant to be scratch-made Mega Man-style doctor sprites, but they really seem like more of their own thing.
– RCR/Kunio-Kun NES customs, media: Agent Dale Cooper and Shelly Johnson from Twin Peaks
(edit 10:20 PM:)

– RCR NES edits/customs, game chars: Pit (Kid Icarus classic)
– RCR/Kunio-Kun NES customs, media: Batman

Also: I cleaned up the the links section a bit. FINALLY!

Sorry, but I’m a bit low on time here. I’ll be back later to add them to the sprite galleries (and possibly throw in a new sprite). The new River City Ransom NES sprites are now in the gallery. The others aren’t because… I don’t know what style they are, really. They were supposed to be like Mega Man doctors (Wily and Light), but don’t. I’ll figure it out later.

Be sure to check out the news in last week’s update post if you haven’t been here for a while, as it includes new fighting-scale sprites and a preview of an upcoming pixel art print!

Most of what I’ve been working on lately isn’t ready to show yet, but you’ll get a preview later in the post. I still have some new things done for the site:

Info Center: more small additions, fixes and improvements were made here and there to the new items system
S-Files: new profiles for Akira, Gil, Glen and Mark from Karate Blazers
Vernacula-X: new separate pages for pro wrestler and power-up, new images for boss and ninja.

Custom Sprites:
Growl: new scratch-made sprites of the Rangers (Gen, Burn, Khan, Jack) and the Dolls.
Rolling Thunder: new scratch-made sprites of Albatross and Leila from Rolling Thunder 2

GFX Generators:
– Dan Hibiki: thanks to a site visitor who wanted Dan’s CvS sprites and told me that Kong’s rips fit the same size as other sprites, Dan has CvS sprites now!
– the Marvel Legends box now has the Spider-Man box style. It’s easy to get pics of the outside of the box, but I have to get and scan my own box inserts, and getting classic Beetle (yes, I know who the Beetle is) let me do that. I still need to get a classic Taskmaster Marvel Legend to do the new Avengers box, though.

Work on the sequel to the “Horror vs.” print (with Freddy vs. Jason) is on the way and here’s a preview:

Even if you saw the preview I posted on Twitter and Instagram a few days ago, this one has a few changes, including some changed characters. I’m still not 100% sure about the “roster,” but I’ll talk more about that at a later date.

I’ll be at the Youngstown Comic Con at the Covelli Center this year, but only on Sunday, July 8th (I’m still working part of the weekend at my day job). It’s mostly a comic convention, but you’ll be sure to find video games and game-related stuff there, too. I finally got Gauntlet IV for Genesis at last year’s con. I’ll have both line art and pixel art prints, along with sketch cards and mini-prints that I don’t have on the site yet. If you can make it to NE Ohio on July 7th and or 8th, please check out the Youngstown Comic Con!

Celebrating the release of the live-action Black Panther movie with an update featuring T’Challa, his friends, and his foes I know, some have been both friend and foe, but this isn’t the time for that argument, I’ve got an update here.

Custom Sprites: the Black Panther, the Dora Milaje, Klaw, and Nightshade were added to the Marvel gallery. T’Challa, the Dora Milaje and Nightshade have multiple sprites, so be sure to check out their mini-galleries!

mini-logos: Klaw and Nightshade
**edit** added Jungle Action-era logo for the Black Panther

The new stuff has been added to the GFX Generators, where you can make your own graphics!

Last, but not least, this is the short (and kinda rushed) version of an idea I’ve had for almost two decades now. One of the sprite sets I wanted to make for M.U.G.E.N. was the Black Panther and I even had an idea for a fancy intro storyboard for it. I never got around to making a whole sprite set, but the intro (and the perfect theme song to use for it) has been stuck in my head ever since. Again, this was rushed (outside issues ate up a lot of time I’d rather spend working on this), but consider this a down payment on the full version I want to make some day.
