Currently busy with many things, including cooking up a few things for future themed updates for this site (and I’ll dedicate a whole post to that soon). I just wanted to make another update so you know that the site is still kicking.

Game Index – Adjustments were made to many entries and the engine itself, including one to the screenshot area. The main index page now lets you check out games according to genre. There are almost 100 games in there right now, so that took a while. Most of the games have at least one screenshot now.

games added: Altered Beast (arcade), Quartet (arcade), Rolling Thunder (arcade)

Sprites – More sprites were added to the following galleries: Superman (arcade), Vigilante (arcade).

GFX Generators – a recreation of the Metroid NES title screen has been added to those variable background screenstyles in the Vs. Maker and GroupShot generators.

Capcom: Avengers/Avenger Ryu & Ko (full ending pose).
Namco: Wonder Momo (Momo sprite)

All new custom sprites were added to their Custom Sprite galleries as well.

Before I go, here’s a minor extra thing to show off. I was testing out an idea I had and posted a .GIF of the result on Tumblr, but had to trim it down because the full version kept getting an upload error. Here’s the whole thing:

Game Index – These 1988 games were added to the Index: P.O.W. (arcade), RoboCop (arcade), Superman (arcade game by Taito) and Vigilante (arcade) added. The Superman and Vigilante text sections have a bit more content and commentary than many of the other index pages and is something I might try to do more often.

GFX Generators – What’s been updated:
GroupShot and Vs.Maker:
Capcom: Radd Spencer/Bionic Commando (new sprite)
Technos: Linda (new sprites and palettes), Abobo (DD2 sprite & new palettes), Double Dragons (doppelganger/shadow palette), Shadow Warriors (Williams DD2 headswap & new palette), Marian (3 new palettes)
Fakeshot Generator: new Mega Man NES-style sprite edits were added, including Radd Spencer, Nth Man (from Larry Hama’s Marvel Comic) and more DC characters whose name ends in man or woman, plus Dr. Sivana.

Articles – I just made some various fixes to the 1989 articles, especially an improved 1989 Game Index list. My plan is to make sure those pages are completely up-to-par before next year, the 25th Anniversary of 1989, the greatest year for video gaming (in my opinion).

Custom Sprites
Capcom – Radd Spencer (NES stance/uniform)
Technos gallery – Linda (new scratch-made pose), Abobo (improved sprites + DD2 version), Williams (hairswap).
Mega Man NES-style – a new gallery with all those crappy edits I made for the Fake Screenshot generator.
DC Comics – The old sprite edits of Player 2 Superman and the Mystery Woman from the Taito Superman arcade game were finally re-added after being left out when the galleries were redesigned. Wait, you don’t know about the Mystery Woman? Read the Superman entry in the Game Index!

Sprites – Superman (sprites and animations from the arcade game) updated.

Anarchy Reigns, the insane 3-D brawler by the equally insane Platinum Games (Bayonetta, MadWorld), was released this week.

I’ve been looking forward to this game for a long, long time for reasons that you see above. Everything I’ve ever seen about this game looks insane and seems to be geared towards people who love game play. Platinum seems to be one of the last developers to still embrace no-holds-barred creativity in games and they deserve some love for that. I’ve heard nothing but good things from the friends who imported the Japanese version and I’ll be impatiently waiting for my copy. It’s only $30, so it won’t be a terrible hit to the wallet or purse.

According to this Polygon article, Capcom Arcade Cabinet will be a series of digitally-downloaded (Playstation Store and X-Box Marketplace) faithful recreations (not emulated) of their earliest arcade games with all sorts of extra features. Players will be able to adjust things like the difficulty and even the hitboxes. For those who haven’t played the arcade versions of those early games in the Capcom Classic Collections, those early games can get notoriously cheap, especially Trojan. It begins with with the platformer, Black Tiger (a.k.a. Black Dragon) and more info is supposed to come out in February. I’m looking forward to seeing how far this program goes and if there will be any cool extras. The original Namco Museum series for the Playstation is still my favorite style of classic compilation and I wonder if these individual games could be a build-your-own Capcom Museum.

Like I said before, updates will be slow for a while as I work on the upcoming new sprite. Still, here’s a Tumblr post with a work progress GIF of the Marian sprite I made in the last 2012 update. I also had a post with the Abobo sprites with the work prog GIF and the sprites I used for reference.

Graphic Generators – I added 8 new edits to the Mega Man NES styles in the Fake Screenshot generators. The Ninja Warriors 16×16 font in the GroupShot generators was also fixed.

Yesterday’s update on Illmosis has the work progress animation for Abobo and the news page talks a bit about what I’ll be busy with for a while. It’s time to get the new member of the Illmosis network up and running. ScrollBoss will still have small updates and the ScrollBoss Tumblr will remain active, too.

Shadi added some new pages to his beautiful Arcade Quartermaster website! One of the new things is a shrine section for the X-Men beat-em-up by Konami. If you haven’t checked out his site before, browse the whole thing!

December 30th, 2012

This year is the 25th Anniversary of many great games and this update pays tribute to a few of them. I planned to have separate updates for them, but that big commission a few months ago forced me to condense them into this chunky tribute. To make it worse, a cold I caught right before Christmas robbed a few more days of work out of this update as well. Still, between this and the Mega Man NES-style screenshot generator I posted a while ago, I hope this is a worth tribute to 1987.

Graphic Generators – For those who missed the debut of the new Fake Screenshot generator and its NES-style pixel flavor,
Fake Screenshot: Rush, Eddie, a new Mega Man edit based on an MvsC win pose were added I also added more edits since the December 17th update.
Vs. Maker & GroupShot: Dr. Light, Dr. Wily, Eggplant Wizard, Pit, Wonder Momo added. Abobo (new sprite), Joe Musashi (Shinobi 1 sprite added), Marian (new Double Dragon 1 sprite), Mega Man (new palette and re-sized NES sprites), Radd Spencer (new sprite) updated.

Custom Sprites – this update’s additions are:
Capcom: Dr. Light, Dr. Wily, Bionic Commando (arcade version)
Namco: Wonder Momo
Nintendo: Pit, Eggplant Wizard and Monoeye from Kid Icarus
Sega: Joe Musashi (original Shinobi uniform)
Technos: new Marian sprite, new scratch-made Abobo sprite (to replace that crappy Hulk edit), slightly-modded/improved Lopar and Williams.

Sprites – Kid Icarus (sprites and animations from the original NES/Famicom game added).

Fake Screenshots – “Rokman (title screen)” was added. No, that’s not a typo.

Mini-logos – Dr. Wily, Dr. Light and Dr. Right added to Capcom section.

I’d like to thank everyone who has been enjoying the site this year, especially the those who have given feedback. Most of this year has been okay for me, but I’d randomly get some really good feedback right when I was feeling like a wet food stamp. You made me feel better and that caused me to push myself to make updates bigger (especially that Halloween update). I’d also like to thank those of you have been digging the Tumblr account I’ve used to show off weird things that didn’t quite have a spot on the site just yet or game-related thoughts that were rolling around in my head at the moment.

What’s up for 2013: I’m not going to talk a bunch of smack only for it to not happen, so I’m going to stay quiet on it. All I’m going to say is that I’ve been working on a bunch of things I’ve wanted to show you for YEARS, huge chunks of it were finished in 2012 and, time willing, 2013 might be when some of it is done enough to show. Besides the fact that people will pretty much swipe anything that you post on the ‘net if you preview it before the main project is done, it really is better if you see some of this stuff in action first. For now, continue to have Happy Holidays, including a Happy New Year!

With this day being the 25th Anniversary of Rockman’s release in Japan, sites are celebrating everywhere, especially with release of the Street Fighter X Mega Man fan game. I was going to save this for the bigger update that’s on the way, but I can’t just let Mega Man’s birthday go uncelebrated here.

This is a new generator that uses some fixes and improvements I made to the main GFX Generator engine. A few things still don’t work 100%, but I think you can still have some fun with it.
Fake Screenshot

I’ll make more Mega Man-style edits these if people tell me that they like this generator. Let me know if you like this generator and want to see more Mega-edits! There’ll be more Mega Man-related things in the “1987” update that will hit the site next week.

edit (2012/12/17, 9:42 PM EST): Minor quick-fix to the resizer so that the smaller sprites aren’t shrunken to nothingness.

I brought this up on Illmosis and I’m hoping to get a bit more help here, too. Raven Perez, writer/artist of hilarious, non-work safe comics like “Either Dojokes or Bacon Strips” and “Raven’s Dojo” has a Kickstarter for his comic and still needs help to hit his goal. He only has a few days left, but I still think he can do it. Raven’s Dojo has the same all-out craziness that makes so many older games fun to play, so I hope it appeals to you, too.

Please help him out by contributing and/or spreading the word about his worthy project!

Here’s a small update that includes a few things tied to that Old-School update from November, improves some X-Men in the GFX Generators, and sets up things for the upcoming 1987 update.

GFX Generators
Updated characters: Flashgal (improved sprite, added pistol and sword sprites), Mario (added in-game Mario Bros. palette with darker blue), Centipede (added five palettes), Colossus (added sprite), Cyclops (Added sprites, including infamous intro sprite), Storm (added sprites), Wolverine (added five sprites)
Updated screenstyles: Centipede background added to the GroupShot’s 160×192 set-ups.

Sprites – Updates to Shinobi (sprites added, layout reformatted) gallery.

Game Index – Ms. Pac-Man, Flashgal and Ghosts ‘n Goblins (arcade versions) were added. Shinobi (arcade) was in the system, but didn’t show up on the main game list for some reason.

The website now has a Shop page. I’ve had a ScrollBoss store set up on my CafePress account for years, but never really put it on the site until now. Why? Because I made a design for it that’s something other than the ScrollBoss S symbol.

Those who have visited the message board might recognize that. The F-Bomb shirt is sold through CafePress and is available in Men’s and Women’s modes. I’m also working on some things that will be sold as art prints, possibly on deviantART but definitely as part of my print collection at conventions.

This update is 100% old-school with games from 1985 and earlier. This is the second such update after the one in February with Pooka, Ms. Pac-Man and others. Oddly enough, that was before I even knew that Wreck-It Ralph even existed. Thanks to delays due to commissions and other projects, this update was pushed back to the month that the movie hit theaters. In other words, this is a really good time to celebrate the title and characters that built the foundation of video games. Besides, this site really needs more content from this era.

GFX Generators
New characters: Berzerk (Evil Otto and Robot), Centipede, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Junior, Dig Dug, Flashgal, Frogger (and Lady Frog), Fygar, H.E.R.O., Kangaroo, Luigi, Mr. Do, Pitfall Harry, Q-Bert, the Wizard of Wor.
Updated: Ghost Monsters (Gloved sprite, new palettes), Mario (new sprites & palettes), Pac-Man (two new sprites), Pooka (new palettes), Space Invaders (new palettes)
New backgrounds: A few new backgrounds were added to Create-a-scene, box tribute and Avatar 100×100 options, but the most important is the scratch-made arcade scene.
Updated screenstyles: Silver Atari 2600 box added to Box Tributes in the GroupShot. Ninja Warriors (arcade) 16×16 font added to the “Create-a-Scene 384×224 + text” in the GroupShot generator mainly because it looks like a big version of the typical font for old games.

Custom Sprites – The following galleries were updated:
Activision: H.E.R.O. and new Pitfall Harry sprite
Atari: Centipede
Data East: BurgerTime’s Peter Pepper
IREM: Mr. X from Kung-Fu Master
Konami: new sprites of Frogger and Lady Frog
Namco: New sprites added of Dig Dug, Fygar, Pac-Man and the Ghost Monsters
Nintendo: Donkey Kong, Donkey Junior, Mario and Luigi sprites
Sega: Pengo and Flashgal
Taito: Space Invader (cabinet art version)
Universal: Mr. Do

Mini-logos: Berzerk, Burgertime, Centipede, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Junior, Frogger, H.E.R.O., Kangaroo, Lady Bug, Mr. Do!, Pengo (in-game), Pitfall, Puckman, Stern, Sunsoft, Q*Bert, Universal, Wizard of Wor.

This really brought back some good, old memories, like the days when I’d go to Lawson’s to buy comics and candy after playing the Star Castle or Mario Bros. coin-op machine. There will be at least one more update like this (though not as big) like this in 2013 to help fix the balance of 70’s-early 80’s material on this site, but I plan to mix in more classic material like this into future updates.

December will have one more themed update to pay tribute to some 1987 games celebrating their 25th anniversaries. There will probably be a small update or two with random stuff in them, too. Be sure to stop by the Illmosis site to see new art projects and pixel art gallery pages with those “work progress” animations that show some of the things I did to make the sprites. Enjoy the update and the rest of your extended play weekend!

Tiny update!

I made a semi-quick sprite of Princess Python over the weekend and then made a sprite of the Ice Cream Man (one of my characters) to post on Illmosis. Both have been added to the GFX Generators. The Princess was added to the Marvel gallery and ICM was added to the Illmosis section on my sprite page.

Remember that second “old-school update” I promised? It’s going down later this month. Both expected and unexpected scratch-made sprites (and more) based on pre-1986 games will hit the site. This month seems a bit more fitting since Wreck-It Ralph just made its debut and many of the characters I planned to have in the update turned out to be in the movie. That era has been mostly neglected here, but this coming update will change that quite a bit.
