… is not gold, but most of this mini-update is!

Brand new sprites of Iron Man’s Mk. 1 and Mk. 2 armors and Moonstone (original outfit) have been added to the Marvel custom sprite gallery and the GFX Generators, where the Iron Man armors use the same palettes as the classic Capcom sprites (I added an all-iron palette for that Mk. 1 armor). Moonstone also got a mini-logo.

There will be a few more Avengers mini-updates this week because I spent most of yesterday drawing line work for sprites in this update a few you’ll see in future updates. I was at All-American Comics in Warren, Ohio during the Free Comic Book Day event and I was concentrating so hard that I didn’t notice the news cameras filming a piece about the event

You can see me at the :35 second mark wearing a gray hat and my Minus World Skull shirt. Now you know who the guy is who randomly pops up on the Shop index page. I didn’t realize they were right there until the filming was over and the cameraman was getting ready to leave. Always remember that the pixel mines struggle is real and the concentration of a Shaolin monk is needed to survive the rugged conditions. You’ll see more fruits of my in-store labor throughout this week!

Avengers Assemble!

Captain America, Iron Man and Thor have been favorites of mine ever since I was a toddler watching a syndicated show that aired their old cartoons from the 1960s, so no one has to twist my arm to have an Avengers-themed update.

Marvel Comics: New scratch-made sprites of Ant-Man, the Black Widow, Thor, Ultron (80s), Scarlet Witch, Ms. Marvel (Danvers), the Red Skull, Wonder Man and the Wizard were added to the Marvel Custom Sprites gallery and the GFX Generators (Wizard is in the “Other Marvel villains” character slot there). The 16×16 font from Captain America and the Avengers (the one used in the big screenshot up there) was added to the 384×224 Variable group pic in the GFX Generators.

Wonder Man and the Wizard were the last sprites I needed to complete the cast of Data East’s “Captain America and the Avengers” beat ’em up cast. I even resprited the Red Skull to (hopefully) be better than that edit I made years ago. Don’t expect the tributes to that game to stop, because I’ll probably replace more of those characters’ sprites.

Mini-logos – Ultron and Wonder Man logos were added to the Marvel gallery.

Stay aware: there might be a small additional update this weekend.

Anyone in the mood for some 2-D avenging should check out the Avengers: United Battle Force game built on the OpenBoR engine. O Ilusionista crafted this mod with more Marvel goodness than you’d think was possible in a fan game.

I’ll be at setting up shop at All American Comics and Cards (Warren, OH) (directions here) this Saturday during Free Comic Book Day, so stop on by if you’re in the area! I’ll have prints for sale, including a few copies of that Horror pixel art pic, and I’ll probably be sketching line art for future sprites. I almost quit reading comics in the mid-90s for a bunch of reasons (more on that in a later update), but the All American Comics shop is a big reason why I hung in there. Give them a shot if you can make it to either the Warren or Boardman locations in Ohio!

I planned to have a bigger update than this, but, well, I’ll get into that later. For now, here’s the newness:

New sprites of Adam Hunter (from Sega’s Streets of Rage, Vixen (DC Comics) and Monica Rambeau in her Captain Marvel uniform (Marvel Comics) have been added to the Sega, DC and Marvel galleries. Ms. Rambeau’s Captain Marvel logo being added to the mini-logos gallery. All three characters are in the GFX Generators where Vixen also has 3 more palettes.

The All AmeriCon convention hits Warren, Ohio again on July 18th (one day before this site’s 15th Anniversary) and I’ll be getting a table there to sell scribbles. Get info about it by checking out the Facebook page for the event. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that a few people I know from the internet will roll through, but I’ll announce that once it’s ready.

My plan is to get some pixel art things to sell alongside my usual scribbles and, possible, a mini-art book. To do that, I really do have to detach a bit from this site to work on those things and it needs to start not now, but right now. This site will still be updated at least once a month until the anniversary in July, though it won’t be as much as the crazy deluge of pixels I’ve been dropping on you for the past few months. Clean up work on the generators will continue to make way for crazy new features and a few things on the site will be fixed up. Some of the things I’m working on will also be sold through this site, because I want to make a game-related mini-book, too.

BTW: I had line work for one more sprite, but I might just save her for May. You’ll know why if you know who she is.

The Flash and the Reverse-Flash get SFA3 portraits! They’re in the custom portrait gallery and the GFX Generators (their SFA3 name graphics are also ready for the SFA3 Vs. Screen). Quicksilver was feeling a bit neglected, so he gets a portrait that fits the X-Men:Children of the Atom Vs. screen in the Vs. Maker generator. The picture comes from the Jim Lee X-Men card set art, a source of many of the real game’s graphics.

Just posting a quick update before I’m off the internet and back to moving into the new place:

They’re only the GFX Generators right now, but they’ll be in the galleries once I’m back on the internet. The reason for the update are in this Tumblr post (along with a .GIF). We’ll return to the Revenge of 1989 when I get back!

The move into the new apartment has just begun, so I didn’t have time to make a full update. However, here’s a new sprite that will be part of the next update:

I’ll be back in a few weeks with a real update!

I’ll be in Artist’s Alley at the All-AmeriCon convention in Warren, Oho this Sunday, the same convention that comic creators Darryl Banks and Jim Steranko will be! To celebrate that, I’ve made sprites based on their creations. Kyle Rayner, a character created by Darryl Banks and Ron Marz gets a hovering sprite and Madame Hydra (a.k.a. the Viper) now has a sprite based on the iconic pose from Captain America #111. Kyle also has his first Green Lantern cover logo while Viper has her Eaglemoss figurine logo (does she even have an official comic logo?) and a name graphic for the X-Men: Children of the Atom Vs. Screen. They’ve been added to the proper DC and Marvel sprite galleries along with the GFX Generators.

Bad news: Due to history repeating itself again, I’ll have to move to a different apartment sometime this month. The owners have to rip through this apartment to fix something that was messed up in another apartment, so it’s time to move again. I don’t have an exact date yet, but I’m pretty sure it’ll completely screw up the July 19th anniversary update. Yeah, just like last year, too. Keep your fingers crossed.

Good news: I’ve set up a page on Illmosis where you can buy prints of some of my pictures. There are only a few game-related prints so far (including the Tyris Flare pic), but there will be more in the future.

April O’Neil was added to the TMNT gallery and Emma Frost (the White Queen) was added to the Marvel gallery. Both characters have been added to the VS Maker and GroupShot GFX Generators. Speaking of the generators…

All four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles now have SFA3 portraits.

One more thing:

the improved Detective Comics #27 sprite is now in the DC Gallery.

edit: along with forgetting to mention that I’d updated the Crime Fighters entry in the Game Index last week, this week’s update adds a few more sprites, including the third boss’ intro and the seventh boss’ tribute to Platoon.

Some of Superman’s supporting cast members and enemies popped up during the comic updates a while ago, but I saved the Man of Steel himself for this update.

Custom Sprites – One scratch-made of Superman goes a looooong way. I edited it into a few Superman-like characters and here’s how they’re arranged in the custom sprite galleries:
DC Comics – Superman, Captain Marvel, Icon, Ultraman
Marvel Comics – Gladiator, Hyperion
Sunsoft – Sunman (Never heard of his game? Learn about it from the Lost Levels website)

Mini-logos – Icon was added to the DC Comics section, Gladiator was added to the Marvel section, Sunman was added to the Sunsoft section and Beans vs. Cornbread was added to the Illmosis section (more on that in a bit).

Those sprites and minilogos were added to their characters in the GFX Generators.

If you play LittleBigPlanet 2 and want some DC and Marvel shape items like the Superman symbol, the Avengers A and the recently-added Eye of Agamotto, check out and queue my item giveaway level on LBP.me and snatch ’em up.

BTW: be sure to check out Arcade Quartermaster to check out the new comic-related shrines, including that Superman arcade game from Taito, the Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon arcade game and the Neo Geo Eightman game.

So, that “the War Begins Again” project I’ve been talking about for a while is now live and it’s an all-new version of the Beans vs. Cornbread site with the first page of the comic and a bit more. I’ll need to concentrate on BvsC and preparing for the All-Americon convention in July, so this site is going to be a bit quiet until ScrollBoss’ 13th anniversary on the July 19th. There’s also a possible month-long commission project on the way as well, so I’m going to be all-around busy for a while. You still might see a few tune-up posts here and there before then, but there won’t be any big updates.

Naturally, the July 19th update will feature some new scratch-made sprites and the focus will be on game characters. While I have a few planned and sketched out, I’d like to hear if there are any characters you want to see sprites of in the anniversary update. They need to be characters originally from platform, beat-em-up or action rpg games from the 16-bit era and don’t already have a custom sprite in the custom sprite galleries. You can leave a response in the comment section here, on the Tumblr, or tell me on Twitter.

… you won’t be able to tell from this small update.

GFX Generators
VsMaker: Added X-Men: CotA name graphics for more Marvel characters (and a few others). There’s an issue with player 2 characters and that screen, but it’ll require a new thing for the engines and that might be a while.

New characters: Professor X, Magneto’s Acolytes, Forge
Updated characters: Magneto (spites added)

Mini-Logos: Marvel Super Heroes – Secret Wars and X-Men vs. Street Fighter (Secret Files) added to Marvel section. Those logos were added to the GFX Generators and work nicely with their counterparts in the Comic 88 x 136 layout in the GroupShot generator.
