This is the third of this week’s comic book-themed updates timed with the release of Free Comic Book Day (which is tomorrow) along with Iron Man 3. As much as I planned to have much more done for today’s update, I had to put in extra hours at the day job and that cut down on production time. Hopefully the character selection will make up low character count (and tomorrow’s update will definitely make up for that).

GFX Generators – New characters were added to the generators that use fighting game sprites:
DC Comics – Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy
Marvel Comics – the Super-Skrull

I also added an edited Wolverine sprite so he’ll have another in his orange and brown outfit. The new sprites won’t in the Custom Sprite galleries until tomorrow because I’m tired and a bit lazy.

There will be another update on Saturday with more comic and super-related sprites, including the Lois Lane sprites you may have seen in a few other places. Here are links to the news posts for issue 1 and issue 2(New sprites of Splinter, Shredder, and more) (Bravoman sprite and Iron Man’s Hall of Armor for MUGEN). I think I’ve saved the best sprites for last, but that’s not my call. It’ll definitely be the most in one shot, though.

One last thing: if you go to a comic shop for the special free comics, do your shop a favor and buy a few comics, too. The shop actually has to pay for those free comics and they’ll probably be swamped with soulless, grubby buttscrapes who’ll just get the free comics and leave. Buy something to help them out if they’re a good comic book with people who are nice to you. Don’t be a buttscrape, people.

GFX Generators There has been a major change to the menu set-up. Palette selections are no long found underneath the sprites on the second menu page. Don’t panic! Select everything else and go to the next page just as before. You’ll now see a new page to select the palettes, but with previews of the sprites to go along with them! The old system was just to avoid making another menu page. It might seem wasteful to have another page, but there will probably be new features (portrait palettes, eventually) added to the engine that would work nicely on this new menu page.

GroupShot: 88 x 136 pixel comic book cover added

Currently has Archie (with Capcom and Sega logos), DC 1980s, Marvel 1980’s, and Udon (Capcom). There’ll be more new cover set-ups like this in the near future, but let me know if there are any that you really, really want to see.

Capcom: Anakaris (2 new palettes), Chun-Li (more CvS sprites), Mega Man (MvsC sprite, 2 new palettes)
Marvel: Psylocke (4 new sprites, new palettes)

Mini-logos – Black Tiger added to the Capcom section, Dark Adventure & Violent Storm added to the Konami section. DC (swirl), Justice League of America (original), Justice League (Giffen/JMD/Maguire era stencil 2), Static, Teen Titans (1980s) added to DC section. Marvel, Fantastic Four added to Marvel section. Bravoman (TG-16 style) added to Namco section. Ninja Warriors and the New Zealand Story added to Taito section.

Custom Sprites – Mega Man NES: Meteor Man (movie), Galaxy Trio (Gravity Girl, Meteor Man, Vapor Man), Ip Man/Yip Man (Donnie Yen version, 2 poses)

Note: the new sprites and mini-logos were added to the GFX Generators, too.

Game Index – Black Tiger (arcade) updated and fixed.

I (finally) have LittleBigPlanet 2 for the PS3 and I’ve been enjoying it for about two weeks now. If you’re on the LBP.ME site, check out my page at scrollboss. I have a lame LBP1 test level and a LBP2 comic book logo/symbol shape giveaway level right now. I’ll eventually have a similar giveaway stage for game-related items for things that aren’t SMB, Sonic and the other things already heavily represented in LBP.

Heads up! In honor of G.I. JOE: Retaliation hitting theaters soon, a small G.I.JOE-themed update will hit next week. Yes, updates two weeks in a row! Expect to see new G.I.JOE and Cobra custom sprites along with some other Joe-related things.

Last, but certainly not least, Happy Birthday to Flying Omelette, owner of the Flying Omelette game site with shrines and an oddity section with more more weirdness than five Minus Worlds stuck together with Crazy Glue!

Here’s a small update that includes a few things tied to that Old-School update from November, improves some X-Men in the GFX Generators, and sets up things for the upcoming 1987 update.

GFX Generators
Updated characters: Flashgal (improved sprite, added pistol and sword sprites), Mario (added in-game Mario Bros. palette with darker blue), Centipede (added five palettes), Colossus (added sprite), Cyclops (Added sprites, including infamous intro sprite), Storm (added sprites), Wolverine (added five sprites)
Updated screenstyles: Centipede background added to the GroupShot’s 160×192 set-ups.

Sprites – Updates to Shinobi (sprites added, layout reformatted) gallery.

Game Index – Ms. Pac-Man, Flashgal and Ghosts ‘n Goblins (arcade versions) were added. Shinobi (arcade) was in the system, but didn’t show up on the main game list for some reason.

The website now has a Shop page. I’ve had a ScrollBoss store set up on my CafePress account for years, but never really put it on the site until now. Why? Because I made a design for it that’s something other than the ScrollBoss S symbol.

Those who have visited the message board might recognize that. The F-Bomb shirt is sold through CafePress and is available in Men’s and Women’s modes. I’m also working on some things that will be sold as art prints, possibly on deviantART but definitely as part of my print collection at conventions.

Tiny update!

I made a semi-quick sprite of Princess Python over the weekend and then made a sprite of the Ice Cream Man (one of my characters) to post on Illmosis. Both have been added to the GFX Generators. The Princess was added to the Marvel gallery and ICM was added to the Illmosis section on my sprite page.

Remember that second “old-school update” I promised? It’s going down later this month. Both expected and unexpected scratch-made sprites (and more) based on pre-1986 games will hit the site. This month seems a bit more fitting since Wreck-It Ralph just made its debut and many of the characters I planned to have in the update turned out to be in the movie. That era has been mostly neglected here, but this coming update will change that quite a bit.

I’m still incredibly busy with commission work, so I didn’t have the time to make a big Avengers update to celebrate the DVD/Blu-Ray release. I was able to cook up some quick “Marvel Essentials” frames for the 160×192 and 100×100 styles in the GroupShot Generator.

Full updates will start again in late October. Be ready!

I know that I had an update on Thursday, but I figured I’d add a few more things.

GFX Generators What’s new in addition to yesterday’s update.

Updated Characters: Yellowjacket sprite and Goliath mini-logo added to Ant-Man/Giant-Man character, Captain America (MSH GEM use pose), Hawkeye (new sprite edit), Hulk (new palettes, including Red Hulk), Iron Man (PROTON CANNON!!!). The Erik Josten version of Goliath (before he became Atlus) was added to the Other Villains character slot.

Custom Sprites: One new Yellowjacket (Pym) sprite, one new Hawkeye pose & improvements on Loki.

Mini-Logos: Goliath, Loki, Mandarin and Wasp. Those logos were added to their GFX Generator characters, too.

If this is the first update you’ve seen this week, check out this previous post to see the much bigger update with new things in it.

I hope you enjoyed these Avengers Week updates. I pretty much ran out of steam after my sinuses decided to explode on Thursday night, so I wasn’t able to make everything I planned to make. Have a good weekend!

GFX Generators There’s a new group named “NEW” that has all the latest characters who were added or updated so you don’t have to scroll through over 100 characters to see all that newness. You’ll still find the characters in the normal places they’re supposed to be, but the NEW section is there for your convenience.

Marvel Characters: Ant Man/Giant Man (separate character with new sprites), Loki (all-new), Hulk (redone “original Hulk” edit), Quicksilver, Wasp (new sprites and many new palettes). Bill Foster/Goliath added to the Other Heroes character slot. Mandarin added to the Other Villains characters slot.
Screenstyles: A brand-new scratch-made Hall of Armor background was added to the “384×224 scenes” and “Avatar 100×100” screen layouts in the GroupMaker.

Wait, who is that guy hiding behind the Hulk? It can’t be. No one makes fan art from that game. It can’t be…

That’s right. It’s Ryu and Ko from Capcom’s Avengers. Yes, even the version from the flyer with the white shirt is in there.

Custom Sprites
Marvel Comics: new scratch-made sprites of Giant Man/Goliath/Black Goliath, Quicksilver, Mandarin and Loki. New outfit variations and shrunken sprites for the Wasp were also added.
Capcom: Ryu and Ko from the old Avenger beat-em-up.

Mini-Logos
Marvel Comics: Quicksilver
Capcom: Avengers

The Avengers movie, this Avengers update and most of the Marvel-related items you see on this website wouldn’t be possible without one man who always deserves credit and thanks.

From the credits of Marvel Super Heroes by Capcom

If you’ve ever beaten Capcom’s Marvel Super Heroes game and wondered who Jack Kirby was, it’s time to learn. This post on Badass Hall of Fame says it all much better than I ever could, but let me give you the short version of it. Jack Kirby brought a sense of all-out action to comics. Most artists, good and bad, had poses that looked like you were about to see something happened or it already happened. Jack Kirby’s work is the pure happening. You can see that punch happening with the same brand of power you might see in some of your favorite sprites in video game attacks. Have you noticed how many games have animations where the Jab attack has the non-punching fist ready to deliver the next hit of the combo? You can find that in Jack Kirby’s fight scenes. While many people consider reality to be the end point of all creativity, Jack Kirby created a style and manner that is beyond reality nearly everything good about comics has a touch of that Kirby magic.

Take a bit of time to check out KirbyMuseum.org to see what I mean. Look at his fighting poses, then look at some of your favorite fighting game frames, especially Capcom CP2-era sprites.

More like crap-tastic, amirite? This update pays respect to the release of the new Captain America: First Avenger movie by hitting you with content based on characters from Cap’s comic along with Data East’s “Captain America and the Avengers” arcade game. Non-comic book fans won’t be left out thanks to a classic beat-em-up bad guy crashing the party since this is also the 11th Anniversary week of ScrollBoss. Gotta have some gaming stuff in there somewhere!

The Announcement: ScrollBoss is on hiatus until further notice. There won’t be another update for a while and updates won’t be regular when they start up again. I have some important projects that require a lot of time so I’ll have to put this site on pause for a while. The main thing is that it’s time for me to hit the drawing page again. One of the main reasons that I kept working to make sure that the GFX Generators were loaded with options was because I wanted you to keep having fun as the site was inactive.

ScrollBoss will NOT be neglected. I have some coding improvements in mind and it’s nearly impossible to do them while also trying to get enough content for a site update. I can work on those things on the side until the time comes to un-pause ScrollBoss again. I also have some bigger things pixel-related things that I could never do because I had to keep doing smaller things to make sure I had an update. There will be previews of these things on the weblog and main menu. I’m still taking sprite and pixel art commissions (because it costs money to have this site hosted), posting ridiculous screenshots on the Tumblr and you may see some new scratch-made sprites appear on Illmosis.

ScrollBoss will be active again before the end of the year and it’s going to hit hard. Until then, please leave any feedback in the comment section of this topic. Thank you for reading and thanks for stopping in.

GFX Generators – Slight improvements were made to the engine but the only one you’ll notice is that the transparent shadows no longer overlap and make darker areas.

New characters: Adon, Birdie, Dee Jay, Fei Long, Gen, Karin, R. Mika, Rose, Sakura, Shadaloo Dolls and T.Hawk from Capcom’s Street Fighter. Marian, Abobo & Burnov from Technos’ Double Dragon games (Neo Geo fighter sprites).
Updated chars: Double Dragons (Neo Geo sprites added), Jubilee (mini-logo & X-Men:COTA name graphic), Zangief (new sprites)
GroupShot scene updates: Golden Axe vs. 01 – improved shadow transparency
VS. Mode “Custom Scene” backgrounds: Italy from Street Fighter Alpha 2, Code Red and On The Hilltop from X-Men vs. Street Fighter.

Game IndexCaptain America and the Avengers added.

The next update update will be in about two weeks from now. That puts it close to the 11th Anniversary. It won’t be anywhere near as big as the 10th Anniversary but there will be medium-large announcement about why it will be the last ScrollBoss update for a while.

Another reminder: the ScrollBoss Tumblr, Scroll like a Boss, exists, is active and has more than update post links. I’ve been posting screenshots that make me smile for all sorts of right and wrong reasons along with videos and reposts of cool game-related stuff I like there.
