My original plan was to post yesterday’s sprites together with these two clip compilations today, but I just felt like splitting them up. These clips in each compilation were different reasons, including early promo vids, for learning how to use Anime Studio (now Moho), and for the upcoming Superhero Sprite Showcade or Comic Book Showcade (I’m still undecided on that right now).

The Marvel video is a mix of official Capcom sprites with my fan pixel work with a sprinkle of Data East’s Avengers game with the second Onslaught BGM from Marvel vs. Capcom as background music. The DC vid is all my work, including unfinished music I’m working specifically for the Showcade videos. Please forgive any sound issues, I’m currently using some cheap temporary speakers, so I couldn’t fine tune the audio before uploading.

Also: a gallery of custom portraits for Capcom’s X-Men: Children of the Atom is now up, with an improved Deadpool portrait and a newly converted Batman portrait, both with art by Jim Lee (like most of the portrait art is in that game).

Those portraits are also in the GFX Generator so you can make your own fake screenshots with them!

The Anniversary celebration finally wraps up tomorrow!

Comic book characters have had a heavy presence on this site since the early days, so today’s spotlight falls on superhero characters from Marvel and DC Comics. Back when I started the site, anyone who wasn’t Batman, the X-Men, or Spider-Man was considered an obscure character (sometimes by their own companies), but that didn’t stop me from making sprite edits of Green Lantern Hal Jordan (who was still dead and buried both in the literal AND wrestling sense of the word), Black Widow, and Taskmaster. Now I’m spriting everything from scratch, replacing all the edits I made from Capcom sprites while trying to add characters I’ve never sprited before, and this update is a combination of that!

Custom Sprites: new sprites (and new galleries) include…
DC Comics: all-new scratch-made sprites of the Atom, Firestorm, Power Girl, Steel
Superman (Taito): the unknown female character found in the game’s rom (something I found using Turaco and posted on the site back in the early ’00s) and the basic drones.
Marvel Comics: the Blob, Pryo, Sentinel (all three based on their Konami beat ’em up/Pryde of the X-Men pilot appearances), Spider-Man (improved scratch-made sprite in “Spider-Man the Arcade Game” pose), Mysterio, the Green Goblin

Mini-logos
DC Comics: Firestorm, Steel
Marvel Comics: the Blob, Mysterio, Pyro

All newness was added to the GFX Image Generators, where you can make pics like the ones at the top of this news post!

I planned to skip a day and post these sprites and something else on Tuesday, but I just wait. Is there still something coming this Tuesday? Of course, and if you didn’t get enough comic book content today, come back tomorrow for some video fun!

First things first, if you’re reading this on the site’s main menu, your eyes aren’t deceiving you, the layout’s slightly different. I’ve moved the header, added some new header images (with many more to come) and rearranged a few other things, but I’m not done yet. Please expect more main menu mutations in the near future.

Toybox/ToyBoss: “Wait, there’s a toy section on this site?” Yeah, a small toy section was made for the site back when the game-related figures I wanted were in my ramen-life price range. That was an entire era of G.I. JOE figures ago (the Joe vs. Cobra/Spy Troops/Valor vs. Venom style that most of the customs are in). This was originally going to be part of the Karnovember update, but I kept wanting to make sure it debuted with new things, like new pics of the G.I.JOE Radd Spencer and Rolento customs, because I didn’t have a camera when I finished the last details on the figures and kept forgetting to take shots with the new camera. I also added some other quick pics, including a couple of Marvel beat ’em up and side-scroller teams that I’ve completed in Marvel Legends scale. I’ve got ideas for better photo set-ups in the future, so just know that I didn’t revive this part of the site just to let it rot again.

Game Index: added Spider-Man (arcade)

Custom Sprites:
Masters of the Universe: Mer-Man and Catra (Filmation designs)
G.I. JOE: Hawk (versions 1 and 2)
Horror: because it’s Friday the 13th, Jason has an updated version of the Pt. III outfit/Pt. VII Axe kill pose (seen on the NES cart box). The shading is now closer to the version seen in the Horror 3 vs. 3 print. I also condensed the Friday the 13th section so Jason and his mother have sub-galleries with their older sprites.

As usual, all the new custom sprites have been added to the image generators, and the fighter-scale image generator now has the series 5 G.I.JOE card added to the G.I.JOE layout (with an explosion obviously based on the new Hawk sprite’s shape).

The Beat ‘Em Up genre is really proving its naysayers wrong this year. As someone running a fan site in honor of those games for almost 20 years, I thought this would be the perfect time to gloat celebrate this new wave of appreciate of digital side-scrolling brawlers. This site has seen beat ’em up-themed updates over the years, but I think I need to do more to rep the genre, so expect to see more updates like this in the future. Today’s newness is dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Data East’s Bad Dudes, but you’ll find a 90’s brawler in her newest outfit, a character from a new beat ’em up, some superheroes, and some characters from Capcom’s Beat ‘Em Up Bundle!

Custom Sprite gallery updates:
Bad Dudes: Blade and Striker (fight stance), Dragonninja, Mini, Kunoichi (finally got a good standing sprite!)
Captain Commando (new separate gallery): Ninja Commando and Brenda & Carol
Other Games (independent): Nikki Rage from Raging Justice
Streets of Rage: Blaze Fielding (Streets of Rage 4)
Marvel Comics: Spider-Man and Namor (both scratch-made and in their Spider-Man: the Video Game fight stances)

Reminder that the new Horror print is now in the shop!

Kickstarter alert: Bushinden: a combat platformer with beautiful pixel art!

Arcade Quartermaster just added three new shrines: Taito’s PU-LI-RU-LA, Data East’s WIZARD FIRE, and Athena’s CASTLE OF DRAGON!

This year’s Free Comic Book Day hits this Saturday, ScrollBoss is having multiple updates this week. Each update will be filled with comic book-related things, including a few items that I promised a while back. This update isn’t purely comic stuff, but I think there’s enough for a comic fan to enjoy anyway.
