Avengers Assemble!

Captain America, Iron Man and Thor have been favorites of mine ever since I was a toddler watching a syndicated show that aired their old cartoons from the 1960s, so no one has to twist my arm to have an Avengers-themed update.

Marvel Comics: New scratch-made sprites of Ant-Man, the Black Widow, Thor, Ultron (80s), Scarlet Witch, Ms. Marvel (Danvers), the Red Skull, Wonder Man and the Wizard were added to the Marvel Custom Sprites gallery and the GFX Generators (Wizard is in the “Other Marvel villains” character slot there). The 16×16 font from Captain America and the Avengers (the one used in the big screenshot up there) was added to the 384×224 Variable group pic in the GFX Generators.

Wonder Man and the Wizard were the last sprites I needed to complete the cast of Data East’s “Captain America and the Avengers” beat ’em up cast. I even resprited the Red Skull to (hopefully) be better than that edit I made years ago. Don’t expect the tributes to that game to stop, because I’ll probably replace more of those characters’ sprites.

Mini-logos – Ultron and Wonder Man logos were added to the Marvel gallery.

Stay aware: there might be a small additional update this weekend.

Anyone in the mood for some 2-D avenging should check out the Avengers: United Battle Force game built on the OpenBoR engine. O Ilusionista crafted this mod with more Marvel goodness than you’d think was possible in a fan game.

I’ll be at setting up shop at All American Comics and Cards (Warren, OH) (directions here) this Saturday during Free Comic Book Day, so stop on by if you’re in the area! I’ll have prints for sale, including a few copies of that Horror pixel art pic, and I’ll probably be sketching line art for future sprites. I almost quit reading comics in the mid-90s for a bunch of reasons (more on that in a later update), but the All American Comics shop is a big reason why I hung in there. Give them a shot if you can make it to either the Warren or Boardman locations in Ohio!

Action Comics #1 was published on this date in 1938, so I finally made a few more Superman Battle Hover sprites. Today’s variations are Action Comics #1 Superman, Sunshine Superman and the Superman from the “Universe of Evil” episode of the Superfriends cartoon. Basically, anything to avoid making a sprite of the Sentry. They’re in the GFX Generators and the Battle Hover gallery.

VGJunk just turned five years old this week and celebrated with a review of Captain Commando. Check it out if you haven’t already and follow the VG Junk Tumblr for bonus fun.

Artist, video game appreciator, action flick connoisseur and all-around cool cat Rusty Shackles also celebrated the anniversary of being alive and I’ll use this opportunity to plug his website and the Insert Quarter Bin Tumblr filled with video game/comic book mash-up that are actually funny and awesome.

There’s a Flash Sale in the Playstation Store this weekend and you’ll find popular gems like Hotline Miami and Retro City Rampage there alongside two personal favorites of mine: Double Dragon Neon (by WayForward) and Anarchy Reigns (by Platinum Games). The PS3 version of DD Neon lacks online multiplayer, but that didn’t stop me from loving the hell out of playing it.

TMNT: Leonardo and Michelangelo join their brothers in getting new sprites based on their 1989 arcade game fighting stances.
Technos: new scratch-made arcade/NES fighting stance sprites of Billy and Jimmy Lee arrive to face off against Jeff (a.k.a. the Lee Brother headswap enemy from the arcade game and Super Double Dragon) and Boss Willy.

Those new sprites have been added to the GFX Generators where the Lee Brothers and all four turtles have more extra palettes and an Ultra (NES) box was added to the GroupShot’s “Boxes, Flyer & Posters 160×192” set-up.

Side note: this update means that I’ve finally made sprites of the whole original Double Dragon cast.

The ScrollBoss Shop page has been updated with the game-related prints I’m also selling on my Illmosis site, including the new Horror vs. Horror (still trying to find a good name for that) select screen.

8×10 and 8×11 prints are $6 each, two for $10, and three for $15. I’ll have more pixel art prints in the near future, so keep an eye out for those!

The shop is (fictionally) run by Tina Fong, the newest fictional member of the ScrollBoss site team.

Tina’s had experience working in places where a rumble could happen at any moment, so she’ll fit in on this site. Of course, you never know when someone else will be behind the register…

I claimed that there wouldn’t be a DangerTerrorHorrorThon two months in a row, but that doesn’t mean I can’t have a small horror-centric update!

I drew a new pic of Splatterhouse’s Rick Taylor and converted it into pixel art portraits he can use in the GFX Generators. They’re in MSH Vs. and Vampire Hunter/Savior/whatever sizes. I also added a few Splatterhouse arcade sprites to the Splatterhouse sprite gallery.

I’ve finally started working on pixel art prints and here’s a preview of the first one I’ll be selling:

Everything in this print is scratch-made, including the background, and you’ll notice some new contestants in the selection grid and a few improvements in the older Jason and Freddy pixel art. I’ve ordered a test print of this for myself and will have it available for sale if it looks good. It will be on both the Illmosis prints page and a prints page that I’ll have on this site in the next update.

I planned to have a bigger update than this, but, well, I’ll get into that later. For now, here’s the newness:

New sprites of Adam Hunter (from Sega’s Streets of Rage, Vixen (DC Comics) and Monica Rambeau in her Captain Marvel uniform (Marvel Comics) have been added to the Sega, DC and Marvel galleries. Ms. Rambeau’s Captain Marvel logo being added to the mini-logos gallery. All three characters are in the GFX Generators where Vixen also has 3 more palettes.

The All AmeriCon convention hits Warren, Ohio again on July 18th (one day before this site’s 15th Anniversary) and I’ll be getting a table there to sell scribbles. Get info about it by checking out the Facebook page for the event. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that a few people I know from the internet will roll through, but I’ll announce that once it’s ready.

My plan is to get some pixel art things to sell alongside my usual scribbles and, possible, a mini-art book. To do that, I really do have to detach a bit from this site to work on those things and it needs to start not now, but right now. This site will still be updated at least once a month until the anniversary in July, though it won’t be as much as the crazy deluge of pixels I’ve been dropping on you for the past few months. Clean up work on the generators will continue to make way for crazy new features and a few things on the site will be fixed up. Some of the things I’m working on will also be sold through this site, because I want to make a game-related mini-book, too.

BTW: I had line work for one more sprite, but I might just save her for May. You’ll know why if you know who she is.

“This Valentine’s Day, lucky couples will find themselves in the sack. The unlucky ones will end up in a body bag. The DangerTerrorHorrorThon continues!”

Friday the 13th got its due in yesterday’s update, so lets celebrate Valentine’s Day with a horrorific twist!

Custom Sprites
Movies: Candyman and and the miner (My Bloody Valentine).
Capcom: two scratch-made Jill Valentine sprites in her MvsC3 fighting stance
Konami: A new scratch-made sprite of the Succubus from Symphony of the Night (replacing the old sprite edit)

Mini-Logos
– Movies: Candyman and My Bloody Valentine(1981)

Those bits of newness were added to the GFX Generators. The Candyman was also added to the Fake Screenshots in Mega Man NES sprite form.

That’s all for this weekend. Take care and keep having a great weekend!

Get ready for two days of the sort of horror-based pixel nonsense that rarely happens here outside of October!

Pamela Voorhees returns to physical (well, pixel) realm in search of her son only to find look-a-likes, doppelgangers and pretenders. Why, these men aren’t her son! What should be done about this mockery? Unfortunately, her answer is the only answer she’s known since Jason drowned all those years ago: “Kill them, mommy! Kill them!”

Custom Sprites
Movies: Pamela Voorhees
Namco: Rick Taylor (Splatterhouse, new pose)
Sega: Kid Chameleon as Manaix
Taito: Booster (Growl/Runark)
Tecmo: Hockey-masked thug (new to replace the 2013 sprite)

The GFX Generators were updated with the new items.

Here’s a few links to some cool stuff to keep that horror groove going:
Anyone disappointed that the real Jason didn’t show up here today should check out Rusty Shackle’s artwork of Jason Voorhees.

The Xiamat Tumblr has a very cool, low-color .GIF of Freddy Krueger that looks like he’s glitching his own NES game from the inside.

Seriously, just follow both of those Tumblrs if you want more of that goodness.

Also: be sure to check out Zombiepalooza Radio’s site and Facebook page!

Tomorrow’s tagline:
“This Valentine’s Day weekend, lucky couples will find themselves in the sack. The unlucky ones will end up in a body bag.”

Big changes are coming to the GFX Generators this year, but here’s a small one that may save you a few headaches. The GFX Generator now has a feature on the last page where you can adjust your choices of where the characters should be, hit the button, and see a reset version of the picture. You can even repeat one sprite/character in all the spots. Things like the character portraits and mini-logos will also switch with the changes. Unfortunately, character name text in the Mega Man NES select screens will not change, but there will be an option for that in the future if this new feature works. Site updates will continue to be a bit small while I work on things like this.

Meanwhile, people seemed to like how that new Raphael sprite looked, so now it’s Mikey’s turn:

I’ll probably wait until I have Don and Leo made before making full-on alternate versions (classic Mirage, 1988 toys), but he’ll have those palettes in the generators.

Flash Week draws to a close with a few more Rogues and a new pose.

Captain Boomerang and Golden Glider each get a new scratch-made custom sprite and mini-logo while Barry Allen and Professor Zoom/the Reverse-Flash get a shared new pose. All of these things have been added to the GFX Generators.

Flash week keeps rolling along! New sprites of Wally West (Justice League Task Force) and the Mirror Master have been added to the Custom Sprites gallery and GFX Generators. Mirror Master’s mini-logo is in there, too.
