Don’t expect more than one medium-sized update for the site in April. I need to get some artwork ready for the All-Americon Convention in Warren, Ohio on May 2nd. I’m still putting some big code rewrites together for the site along with working on some projects that you may like.

The people who have checked out the Bred SFA-style sprite set seem to like it. No one even complained about the kick and even I complain about that! A Dug sprite set will be added to the site in May with Jake and Simmons showing up a bit after that. I wonder who will be the first person to put them in a project.

Don’t be surprised if you see the look of the site randomly change a bit here and there. I’m slowly fixing a lot of things and the site will eventually have one completely solid look before getting a slight 10th anniversary update.

You know that Movie Poster graphic on the index page and the Jumping Side Kick graphic on many of the regular pages? Those will be gone some time this year. Here’s a preview of what will be replacing the Side Kick Pics:

Those aren’t the final version but it’ll look something like that. Expect to see lots with the original games along with re-created scenes, some crossover pics and a few surprises.

There isn’t a lot of new stuff in this update but a whole lot of work went into it.

Custom Sprite Downloads – the “SFAlpha” style Bred sprite set has been added to the Custom Sprite Download page. Yes, an entire set of sprites! There will be future updates to the set, just like the other sets on the page, but it has everything you need to bring Bred into a CPS2 Capcom fighter-scale fan game.

Sprites – The slightly new overall look for the main sprite galleries are done. There is still a lot to fix but all the main stuff is in there. Each gallery now has a box at the top with things like Game Index links. Many of the gallery layouts are just copies of the older versions but some have the more unified style that they’ll all have when they’re done. The games that had a few sprites on a company’s sprite hub page now have their own pages. The upcoming screenshot galleries use the same engine and will hit later this year.

Custom Sprites – The Capcom page gets recreations of Bred’s “OH MY GOD!” and “OH MY CAR!” sprites and the Strider Hiryu sprites that used to be on the Strider sprite page.

Graphics – Other – Bred’s word balloons were added.

You’ll also start to see a slightly different version of the ScrollBoss logo in most areas. I remade the whole font again and you’ll see more of that when I start to remake other logos for the site. That’s all for now. If you’re trying out the Bred sprite pack and want to leave some feedback about it, feel free to reply in this topic. I need to know if the format I’m using works for people before I put the Dug pack together.

edit:
I almost forgot about this other stuff that happened in-between updates:

First, check out two pics I added to Illmosis:
Tyris Flare in a fighting stance Douglas Bild from Rushing Beat Ran in his select screen pose.
That’s right. Douglas Bild from Brawl Brothers and Rival Turf in full color along with Tyris Flare in base color mode (coloring without shading).

The second thing is from someone awesome that you probably know about already, Rinry of Rinry Game Game. Check out this video and you may see something… familiar :)

Thanks, Rinry and Jot!

I finally got a video together of Bred in action using OpenBoR as a test engine:

This sprite test is still using early versions of a few sprites including the punch with a botched transition animation. It’s hard to play and purposefully get hit and it’s even harder to get close enough to Bred to make him do that knee strike, the main attack that I like in the set. The first version of the sprite set should be available later this month.

BTW: No, I’m not making a mod for OpenBoR. It’s just really great and easy for testing animations as they’d work in a game.

I updated Illmosis earlier today with an animation that will be on ScrollBoss in the next udpate (whenever that is):

I still don’t know when the whole set of sprites will be ready but I’m getting close to the end of it. Here’s a shot of a transition sprite I’m adding between the original falling pose and the knocked-out pose:

An in-progress pic of Bred's falling-to-KO transition frame.

Custom Sprites – Bred and Dug get two new sprites added to the Capcom page but there will be more. I’ll explain in a bit. A new Power Girl sprite edit was added to the DC gallery.

Logos – Avenging Spirit, Alien Storm, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Chinese Hero, Dark Seal, Joe & Mac, Kangaroo, Lady Master, Mappy, Magician Lord, Mutation Nation, Ninja Combat, Ninja Commando, Psycho Soldier, Strider (JPN & USA arcade, NES),

Mini-logos – Joe & Mac (separate logos, of course), Kage (the Legend of Kage), Kung-Fu Master, Mappy, Metroid (NES and Super Metroid style), Twinbee, the Punisher, Swamp Thing, She-Hulk.

So now there’s a Bred and Dug sprite on the Capcom custom sprite page. That normally wouldn’t be a big deal unless…

… I decided to make more. This is one of the things I posted a teaser image of a while back. I’m working on a Street Fighter Alpha-ish sprite set of Bred and a head-swapped Dug to go with it. I’m resizing arcade F.F. sprites by 112% and tracing the linework while giving it a more SFA look. Some poses, like the jump, are being redone altogether. This will not be an insanely fluid set of sprites although I am adding transition frames to every animation. This is a slow burn project since I’m also working on a comic book right now but expect Bred and Dug to be finished early this year. I already have a demo test of him using OpenBOR and I’ll try to make a video of this as soon as I can.

The Beats of Rage section, untouched for a long time, finally gets some new content to go with minor look upgrade.

Final Fight food

The Beats of Rage section gets a big new addition: all of the food and items from the arcade version of Final Fight. All of the bonus items have their proper scores and the food has already been calculated to fit the default 100 pixel long health bars in Beats of Rage and should work for games that use percentage health displays. There are instructions inside if you want to convert the food back to their original 144px. bar values. Item graphics were taken with Kawaks and are still in their original colors so you’ll have to apply your own palette. Please let me know if there are any problems with this set by replying in this news post.

Work continues on that boring behind-the-scenes crap that no one really cares about. The biggest project right now is the new graphic gallery script that will eventually replace all the old sprite pages. It has some nice little features in it including links to the Game Index. I’m still working on it but here’s a preview using the Alex Kidd page:
Image gallery test
This is the big reason why I’m not going to update the sprite galleries for a while since it’d make more work for me to convert the pages to the new gallery data style.

I’ve also been working on more of those rectangle graphics that you see in certain parts of the site.

Here’s a look at something else I’ve been working on:
You remember what happened to his car so he HAS to walk everywhere.
Hey, that looks familiar too!

The excellent Sega-16.com recently added an interview with Chris Bergstresser, former Sega production manager who worked on the Sega Channel. He currently runs Vector Entertainment and their Vector City Racers game. The Sega Channel did in the 1990’s what X-Box Live does now: send video games to your video game machine box through an interbutt connection.

This news source can’t possibly be more appropriate as AtariAge.com spreads the word that the upcoming Atari Flashback 2+, a plug-and-play Atari 2600 with 40 built-in games, can be pre-ordered from Atari at this link for $29.99. There’s a beautiful bonus item of an Atari t-shirt with a 2600 on it. Seeing as how some places on the internet will try and charge that price just for a “distressed” t-shirt alone, that’s not a bad deal at all.

Whip Ass Gaming has been on an update rampage so furious that I’m not even going to tell you what was added because something may get added as I type this. Just look for yourself and be sure to check out the Sound{e}scapes section.

Last, but not least, GM Spectre posted another new character teaser for the next update of his King of Fighters XX fighting game based on the UFGE engine. The game is an insane mixture of KoF, old-school gaming characters and internet memes that gets iller every time GM posts something new. The latest video is no exception:

Meanwhile, I’m still fishing through links on the site and replacing old Gamespy/ClassicGaming and GeoCities links. I fixed a few more tonight but it’s still going to be like “the rest of the broken glass” in that I’ll probably be finding more every time I try to clean up.

July 19th, 2010 will be the 10th Anniversary of ScrollBoss. I’m going to warn you right now that the first few updates of this year will probably be boring with very few sprites, sprite edits and things like that. The main reason is that I’m working on upgrades for sections of the site and you’ll see a bit of that in this update. The other reason… is something I’m not ready to announce yet. Here’s the newness of this update.

ScrollBoss Blog – The new ScrollBoss web log (powered by WordPress) will be getting a workout by serving as a blog, an eventual feedback outlet for things and the new engine for the site update news posts. If you’re reading this on ScrollBoss’ main menu, you’re really reading the weblog. The good news is that I can copy the old news posts and use their old dates to keep everything in order. The bad news is that I don’t think I can copy the responses. That old news (and responses) will be archived on the Old News page. The MugenBoss index page also got this update but it still looks ugly overall. That’s one of the sections I’ll be working on this year because the header is too damned fugly.

Tips and Cheats – The entire section has been modified to not suck as much. Each tip now has a link to the game’s index page if it exists. Added tips for Contra (NES), SoR3, Final Fight (SNES), Sonic Blast Man (SNES). Nothing that you couldn’t get from any decent code site but I may as well have it here too. I’m also trying to use more accurate tip descriptions like the Sonic Blast Man code that is always described as a level select even though it’s not.

Game Index and 1989 – Another code rewrite shows up on the Game Index’s main page and the 1989 Game List. Ninja Gaiden (NES), Sonic Blast Man added and the 1989 Game List was updated.

Logos – Sonic Blast Man added.

Mini-logos – Bayou Billy, Emma Frost, Vigilante (IREM) added.

Don’t even ask me how this blog is going to work because everything that I start mutates on it’s own. It’s mostly for posting ScrollBoss and MugenBoss updates but there will be some gaming news if it relates to the types of games featured on the site like side-scrollers, beat-em-ups, etc. I’ll try to kick out some fan game news here too. One thing that will definitely be here are posts where I preview things I’m working on for the site. I may even kick out some early versions of things for people to test out or just have fun with. It’ll be a secret since I’m pretty sure no one will read this frickin’ thing. But still.

All of the posts before this one are archived versions of old website updates. I’m not sure if I’ll ever get all of the old ones added. There is a grand total of 208 posts using the CuteNews system and that doesn’t count the 3 years of update posts I typed right onto mainmenu.html. Yes, I still have some of those saved somewhere.
