No site updates until the October 29th. I’ll try to have something horror and monster-themed ready but I can’t make any promises.
No site updates until the October 29th. I’ll try to have something horror and monster-themed ready but I can’t make any promises.
I have some artwork and commission projects that need to get done so the update is kind of light. Luckily I finished something before things got thick…
Custom Sprite Packs: Ladies and Gentlemen, the set is complete:
Jake’s SFA-style sprite set is now ready to be downloaded. This completes the four-man group of lowest-level thugs from Final Fight. There will probably be additions and improvements to these in the future but it’s good to have the basics of the whole group finally done. This will also be this year’s last Custom Sprite Pack for Project:Drone. Things are getting busy like Kid ‘n Play so it’s time to put that project on pause. I don’t know how many more drone characters I’ll take a shot at next year but I have a few ideas.
GFX Generators – The following backgrounds were added to the GroupShot Maker:
Apocalypse Now! (MSHvsSF and XMvsSF versions)
SFA3 stages: Cody, Rolento, Ryu and Sodom
Darkstalkers: Demitri
Justice League Task Force: Wonder Woman
BTW: Check out Illmosis this coming weekend if you’re a Pac-Man fan. That’s all I’m sayin’ for now.
I have no idea how many people read the site’s weblog but I figured I’d add this as a separate note tonight since there won’t be an update until next week. The first two videos I made for the SFA-style Bred and Dug sprite sets just had music with no SFX because I couldn’t get that issue ironed out on my system. I finally have that sorted out and this is the result:
YouTube.com: Thugs sprite test
This video won’t go public until next week’s site update where Jake is added to the Custom Sprite Pack page. It’s not great but it’s just meant to show what they can do including surprise me with a jumpkick. It will take me a while to get the hang of making everything I want in videos but getting the sound capture to work was one of the main things keeping me from making more videos for this site. Expect to see more ScrollBoss videos once I get everything working smoothly.
Custom Sprite Packs– a sprite editor who goes by the name of Laslunder has sent a Work-in-progress Cody sprite pack that matches up with the sprite in my Street Cody sprite pack. They’re not 100% finished but will help boost the efforts of anyone who wants to make a whole sprite set of Cody in street clothing. He has WAY more edits in there than my pack has! I planned to update my Cody pack after I made the Jake pack but Laslunder’s work nudged me to work a bit on mine again so my Cody pack been updated as well. There are some new and improved sprites but here’s the important stuff:
![]()
Improved standing animation with better handwraps.
![]()
new Cyclone Kick.
If you downloaded it before, download it again because almost everything has been improved. The improved sprites and SFA3 portrait were also added to the Graphic Generators. Be sure to check out Laslunder’s pack, too!
NOTE: Those downloaded the PrimeOp Cody pack before 1:30 PM Eastern Standard Time should re-download it again. I just made some fixes to the collar in the last few frames thanks to some sound advice from Kiwi.
Custom Sprites – The new and updated Cody sprites were added to the Capcom custom sprites page.
Game Index – Gauntlet (NES) was added. Cody also made some improvements to the game page scripts because he had to be involved somehow.
Beats of Rage – the main font from Captain Commando (Arcade) added to the downloads. You can spell Cody’s name with those letters.
Thanks to Sidd the Kidd for letting me know that a version of the Evolution Engine (EvE) for beat-em-ups is available for download I plan to check this out when I’m not swamped with projects. It looks mighty, mighty powerful. Check out the demo videos to see what the engine is capable of!
Custom Sprite Downloads – the “Simons (SFA-style)” sprite set is finally done and available on that page. ALSO: please re-download Dug because the earlier version had a few pixels cut off the boots in two frames. Those have now been fixed. I’d have made a video to show you Simons in action but my internet connection is still messed up. You’ll have to wait a while longer for Jake because I have some other projects that need some serious attention. The wait won’t be all that long since the new stuff is mostly just hair and goatees. I’ll probably make one last demo video for them using the OpenBoR engine.

Finally, I had Clash at Demonhead on the brain after reading the Scott Pilgrim books and seeing the film and finally noticed that I didn’t have ANYTHING about that game on this site other than the game’s logo. It’s odd because it’s one of the many games that I could only rent and never saw in stores during it’s run right along with River City Ransom and Ogre Battle. I think some graphics from it were part of the infamous “Lost Folders” situation from 2005 after horrible HD crash. This update rights that wrong in many of the following section updates:
Sprite Index– new Clash at Demonhead page with a few sprites and animations.
Game Index – Clash at Demonhead (NES)
Company Index – Vic Tokai
Logos – animated Clash at Demonhead (only the main loop)
Mini-logos – Darkseid and Deadshot
1989 – Hey, guess what game was added to the 1989 list? Clash at Demonhead? Well, yeah.
GFX Generators – Vs. Maker now crops portraits according the screenstyle. I planned to do this sooner but delayed it because I also planned on re-arranging the screenstyle data file structure because they’re getting messy. This lets you use the bigger portraits (like the Vampire Hunter/Savior 2 win portraits) and crops them so they don’t cross over into parts of the screen they shouldn’t be in.
New characters: Apocalypse, Dhalsim

Captain, Ninja and Baby were updated to have the proper sprites to recreate the scene. Baby Commando’s sprite in the game isn’t complete so I made a partially filled-in edit of it just for use with the group pose. Just keep him in the back and covered up. I’ll get that finished some day.
Minilogos – Dhalsim
This is going to be the last weekly post for a while. There are some other projects I need to get done (including a commission) so it’s time to switch gear to that for a while. The next update should be in two weeks which should give me enough time to finish the current commission, work on some art and finally finish those Simmons sprites. Maybe my internet connection will be fixed by then so it won’t take nearly a minute to upload three screenshots that total to 5.28 KB. So updates will be every two weeks again. I still plan to do that superhero-based update this year and there could be more surprises depending on how many things I can get finished. See you in two weeks.
BTW: Please go to the theater to see Scott Pilgrim.
So the last update reeked of weak sauce because I’m also working on art commissions. That’s partly because I worked on more than one thing. This week’s update does the opposite by being pure GFX Generator updates. Again, it’s not much but it’s better than just updating one character.

New Vs & GroupShot characters: Jin Saotome, Shadow Lady (Chun-Li palette + minilogo)
New GroupShot-only characters: Pure & Fur, Saki Omokane
New sprites + palettes: Morrigan, Roll (Capcom), Venom
New palettes: Superman
GroupShot stages: TMNT Vs. stage updated (now 100% remade), Golden Axe – Select Player, MvsC: Moon and H.Q. of Evil, Justice League Task Force: Daily Planet and Gotham rooftop, Brawl Brothers player select screen
Hit the GFX Generators page and have fun.
Speaking of Jin, if you’re ever ripping his sprites from MvsC, know that neither in-game palette shows all 16 colors at once. P1 mixes kneepad and jumpsuit whites and P2 mixes the jumpsuit’s black with the black linework from the P1 palette. I had to get both versions of every pose and use some recolor-fu on the P2 sprites to map the main black pixels to a new 16th color. If you had fun reading that, just imagine how much fun I had doing that. Just remember that I do these things for you because I care. I really do.
Also: XuhanShi, one of the two fine people I’m doing commissioned art for, has been added to the Special Thanks section of the credits page. I put part of that money straight into paying my Dreamhost account for this and my other sites. That helped keep the lights on in this site so I think he deserves a spot in the Special Thanks section.
I’m working on some very cool art commissions right now so today’s update is very light. Don’t “Aww” at me because one of those commissions went towards paying for the Dreamhost account this is on.
Gfx Generators – If I only had time to do upgrade one character, I may as well make it a pain-in-the-butt like Iceman (with his color-cycling self). Iceman gets alt-palette power and the other sprite he uses on the Vs. Screen.
Game Index – various entries have been fixed, improved or completely rewritten. Adding the in-game intro text until a while after I started the index so I’m now adding it to earlier games.
new: Streets of Rage (Genesis)
improved: Forgotten Worlds (arcade), Pocky & Rocky (SNES), the Revenge of Shinobi (Genesis), Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis)
I want to get all the earlier entries up to code with intro text and other things before I change up the engine a bit. That’s it for this week. Gotta get back to work on the paying gigs!
There isn’t much for this week. There was a bit more code improvement here and there
Graphic Generators This week’s update brings in the last stragglers from “X-Men: Children of the Atom” so the roster is complete now.
* = character has alternate palettes.
New Vs. and GroupShot characters: Omega Red*, Sentinel*, Spiral*
New GroupShot-only character: Solid Snake !
Sprites – Renegade (arcade) page added with at least one sprite per character. Alien Storm’s page gets the other set of palettes for the heroes’ standing sprites. The second player portrait for Avengers (Capcom) was finally added.
Game Index – Alien Storm (arcade), Avengers (arcade), Golden Axe (arcade) added. Golden Axe was also added to the 1989 game list.
Links – I added Super Sprites to the links section after reading my site reports and finding out that they link to me. Most of my website traffic reports are filled with hotlinkers (or attempted hotlinkers) on busy sites so it pushes the legit links right off the page. Send me a message if you want to trade links so I can link back to you.
I found two interesting links thanks to GameSetWatch:
the Asskickers, a new beat-em-up game in the works thanks to AGO Games.
IWADON: Hiroyuki Iwatsuki Tribute Album – this remix album in tribute to the Natsume composer includes tracks from Ninja Warriors Again, Pocky & Rocky, Wild Guns, Spanky’s Quest and more. I haven’t heard everything yet but the Stemage remake of the Ninja Warriors intro is COLD BLOODED.
Last, but not least, Rinry of RinryGameGame fame on reaching 10,000 subscribers on YouTube! Check out her Thank You video in this link. Keep up the good work!
Look, we all had fun last week except for the poor, dumb idiot who had to upload all that nonsense to the site over a connection that can barely make it through a whole YouTube music video. He did not have fun and I know this. Most of today’s update is the unfun stuff that I need to do to make the site better.
Game Index – Engine update includes listing multiple companies along with links to Company Index pages on the Game Index page. Capcom Classics Collection volume 2, Pocky & Rocky (SNES) added.
Company Index – Jaleco (who I thought I’d added already) and Natsume were added to the index.
Logos – Kiki Kai Kai (arcade), Pocky & Rocky (SNES), Spartan-X (arcade) added. A contributor by the name of Randomish sent logos for Spartan-X and Spartan X 2 (Famicom), Edono (S.Famicom), Nightmare Busters and the unfinished SNES Batman game by Software Creations.
Site work: I finally finished removing the gray gradient backgrounds from the last hundred or so 32 x 32 portraits seen in the Company, Game and S-File pages. You can’t tell in most places because I copied the gradient as a background pattern that appears behind those graphics on the page but it’ll be more obvious once I start using them in things that have unique backgrounds.
GroupShot – Unknown Soldier (MvsC edits made to look more like the in-game characters) and Dieter (Brawl Brothers/Rushing Beat Ran).
I won’t be able to make any big updates for a while. I, and many other people in this area, have been going through some internet connection problems since late June. They’ve been slowly getting worse to the point where I usually can’t watch a whole music video on YouTube without my connection dying at least once. I usually have to unplug and replug the power to the modem to get it to kick back on almost right away but the connection just stays out for a while every once in a while. I clocked my upload speed at midnight and it ranges between .20 and .12 Mbps, less than half of what I’m supposed to be getting. A few files randomly fall through the cracks every time I upload and I found this out the hard way during the July 19th update. I didn’t have any big updates planned right away but this also keeps me from uploading any large files and I’m pretty sure that no video uploads to YouTube will make it all the way through. Expect updates to be a bit light until this gets resolved.
