I can’t believe it. I’ve already bought it through Steam, installed it, and I just STILL don’t believe it. But it happened: Streets of Rage 4 is real and available now. I’m going to spend part of my weekend playing it (and Treachery in Beatdown City, which I still need to play through). Here’s the site update:

Custom sprites: Streets of Rage: New sprites: ‘Skate’ Eddie Hunter (new sprites to replace the scratch-made ones done in 2011), Roo/Victy, Antonio, Bongo (SoR1), Abadede (my 2017 sprite edited to have SoR1 gear), and the Streets of Rage cop. This finishes two things: the ENTIRE player and enemy list of Streets of Rage and all playable characters from the first 3 games.

edit: 11:25 AM EST: Roo somehow hopped out of sprite folder while uploading files, but has returned safely to the gallery page (thanks for the alert, EddieMountaingoat!) I forgot Antonio’s tiny glasses, but they’re there now (thanks to spriter @Zabuyaki for the heads’up on Twitter). I also updated SoR custom gallery’s 200 x 100 pic with all the playable heroes from 1 through 3.

All sprites have been added to the main GFX Image Generators, along with that SoR 1 Pine Pot background I teased some time last year. Why’d I wait so long to put the background out there? Because I wanted to show it in the Streets of Rage 1 Sprite Showcase first!

Long story short, I decided to start doing single game Showcases for a while and save the Showcade title for special episodes with more than one game (like last year’s episode 000). My current Showcase plan is to alternate between posting one all-new showcase (which I just did), then post an updated version of a showcase from episode 000 (which had Golden Axe, Final Fight, and Castlevania).

edit 2020/05/04: the following things have been added:
– Sprites: police car sprites added to SoR 1, Victy and 48x48p portraits added to SoR 3

– GFX Generators: the main GFX Image Generator now has the SoR3 cinema look added to the MvC ending, and the SoR 3 16×16 font (used in the “Group 384×224 w/ writing” screenstyle in the main generator) now has added palettes and the SoR3 8×16 font was added.

DC Comics: Deadshot, Deathstroke, Sinestro, Star Sapphire

Those were the last four DC Comics villains who needed scratch-made sprites instead of the old sprite edits made from Capcom sprites (though the edits can be seen in the characters’ mini galleries).

GFX Generators: All new sprites added, along with…
– MvC ending: frames based on Street Fighter Alpha 2 (with and without top) and Final Fight (3 font colors)

My day job is currently deemed “essential” so I only get to quarantine in my time off. That means I only get my normal amount of time to hunker down and work on things. Here are some little previews of things that aren’t quite read to show just yet.

No tricks here, all fun!

Custom Sprites
NuChallenger: Bruce Maxwell (Treachery in Beatdown City)
Marvel Comics: Misty Knight
DC Comics: improved Wonder Woman hands-on-hips pose (and new 1973 and 1995 outfits)
Horror: Tina Shepard (Friday the 13th pt. 7)
Portraits: Street Fighter Alpha 3 Vs. screen Wonder Woman

GFX Generators: all new sprites and portraits were added along with…
– End – Marvel vs. Capcom 384×224 (in main generator and MvC1): 3 new non-specific layouts

The wait is over and Treachery in Beatdown City is out now! Here’s the trailer from last year:

Tactical turn-based beats in the streets are now available on PC or Nintendo Switch, so run get it if that sounds like you’re thing (I gave to the Kickstarter and downloaded it with the quickness last night). Congrats to the whole NuChallenger crew, who have been fighting for YEARS to get this game made and out into the world!

(BTW: shout-out to the YouTube genius who removed the sizing options from the Share:Embed feature. Thanks for that step backwards!)

Though the site has been quiet for a while, I’ve been quietly at work on a lot of new things and it’s time to start adding some to the site. This update will definitely be updated multiple times through the rest of the month while I deal with this messy set of additions!

Custom Sprites
Zelda series: Link (A Link to the Past) fight stance and Super Famicom pose
Mario series: Mario running
Streets of Rage: Jack (SoR 1 juggler)

added 2020-03-21
Marvel Comics:new scratch-made versions of Iron Man and War Machine’s “Superior Tech” taunt in multiple armors from the original to Extremis/Marvel vs. Capcom 3, along with homage sprites based on the cover of Tales of Suspense #39 (drawn by Jack Kirby and Don Heck). That’s a whole lot of armor, but you’ll see even more Iron Man stuff later this year!

The new sprites were added to the main GFX Generator, where you can use them to make static/still graphics like the ones in this post!

Social distancing, self-quarrantining, shutdowns, and the disease causing it all, have had an impact on so many of us, and I’m going to start a list below of people who I’ve seen on various sites asking to share/repost/retweet/etc. I know the cash flow is kinda tight out there (and it was BEFORE this started), but please consider helping if you can.

Please check out FramePerfect, run by xocelotyouth, FGC streamer and friend from the Prime Central Station board. His job was an early part of the shutdown in Ohio, so any purchases or donations would really be helpful right now.

For the first time in the year 2020, THE NEWNESS IS ON!

Custom Sprites:
Sonic series: Tails
Shinobi series: Karasu (the Revenge of Shinobi)
Spawn: Spawn (original outfit)
Marvel Comics: Spider-Woman
DC Comics: Starfire

BTW: the last three galleries are linked in the looong-overdue Comic Books Custom Sprite gallery hub.

Mini-logos: McFarlane: Spawn, Sega: Tails

All new sprites and mini-logos were added to the image generator, along with two Image Comics covers added to the 88×136 pixel option (even though the Spawn sprite is way too tall to fit in the cover).

Finally, here’s a short video teaser for some of the things I’ve been working on for the site, future videos, and more.

What the things in the video mean will be explained as I get to them, because it’ll be a hell of a lot easier to show you than explain. In the words of Guru, “Peace out, we’ll be back, stay tuned.”

December 27th, 2019

It’s the final Friday of Final Fight’s 30th anniversary month, so this update is filled with new Final Fight sprites, including many you may have seen in a video a while ago, but there’s a whole new one, too. This update also features other beat ’em up characters and the debut of the NEW Brawlstreet crossover beat ’em up site header on the main menu (you may have to refresh a few times to see it). Let’s get into it!

Custom Sprites:
Final Fight: new sprites of Haggar (FF1 art pose), Axl and Slash (redone, better), Edi. E (scratch-made, FF1 waiting pose), Sodom (made from scratch), Poison (Capcom Fighting All-Stars alt), Dean, Bay Area Dog/Shiro
Double Dragon: Lopar/Roper (new, better standing sprite)
Streets of Rage: Dr. Zan
Kunio-kun: Misako and Kyoko – SD sprites of their Shin Nekketsu Kōha -Kunio-tachi no Banka outfits
IREM: the Vigilante. Kung-Fu Master was finally moved to its own gallery.
Technos: the red shirted bald enemy from Renegade

All sprites have been added to the main image generator, where you can make graphics like the ones I used to show off the sprites here.

December 15th, 2019

So after the uploading the “Toys and Trouble” and watching the Joe Bob Briggs Red Christmas marathon on Shudder Friday night, I woke up Saturday thinking that I’d be able to get some rest. Then I go to Twitter and see that people are talking about how it was the anniversary day of Final Fight. I knew December was the month (and had been planning something for it long ahead of time), but could never find anything about the exact day. Even now, I can’t find anything other than the month and the year. Anyway, I couldn’t let the day slip by, so I worked like mad all day to finish (as much as I could) and put it on Twitter and Instagram. It’s not on YouTube yet because it’s not the full version of what I wanted to do. The main thing is that I’ve now made sprites of every hero, enemy and ally in the game, including the characters already brought into the Street Fighter Alpha series. They’re all in the video below:

Things that had to be finished for this clip: the broken wall part of the logo, gradient FIGHT shading, spriting more of Belger’s room and fixing issues with Sodom’s sprite. The new sprites for Axl & Slash, Sodom, Rolento, Edi.E, and Shiro (the Bay Area Dog) aren’t in the galleries YET, but will appear later in the month.

While I’m talking about Final Fight, the “Guy vs. Mad Gear” video isn’t going to make it out before the end of the year. I think I’ve got about 85% of the sprites I need for it. Thing is, I’m just kinda tired. I tried to do too much at once this year (there’s STILL stuff you haven’t seen yet), was too worn out from day job work and it’s going to need more time. It’s probably for the best, because the Showcade video idea made me rethink all my other video ideas, so I think I’ll get that show going stable first before going back to that fight scene. I’ll probably try to take a REAL break after I’m done this year, but then I said that more than once earlier this year.

Stay tuned, though, because this site still has some business to take care of before this year is over!

First things first, if you’re reading this on the site’s main menu, your eyes aren’t deceiving you, the layout’s slightly different. I’ve moved the header, added some new header images (with many more to come) and rearranged a few other things, but I’m not done yet. Please expect more main menu mutations in the near future.

Toybox/ToyBoss: “Wait, there’s a toy section on this site?” Yeah, a small toy section was made for the site back when the game-related figures I wanted were in my ramen-life price range. That was an entire era of G.I. JOE figures ago (the Joe vs. Cobra/Spy Troops/Valor vs. Venom style that most of the customs are in). This was originally going to be part of the Karnovember update, but I kept wanting to make sure it debuted with new things, like new pics of the G.I.JOE Radd Spencer and Rolento customs, because I didn’t have a camera when I finished the last details on the figures and kept forgetting to take shots with the new camera. I also added some other quick pics, including a couple of Marvel beat ’em up and side-scroller teams that I’ve completed in Marvel Legends scale. I’ve got ideas for better photo set-ups in the future, so just know that I didn’t revive this part of the site just to let it rot again.

Game Index: added Spider-Man (arcade)

Custom Sprites:
Masters of the Universe: Mer-Man and Catra (Filmation designs)
G.I. JOE: Hawk (versions 1 and 2)
Horror: because it’s Friday the 13th, Jason has an updated version of the Pt. III outfit/Pt. VII Axe kill pose (seen on the NES cart box). The shading is now closer to the version seen in the Horror 3 vs. 3 print. I also condensed the Friday the 13th section so Jason and his mother have sub-galleries with their older sprites.

As usual, all the new custom sprites have been added to the image generators, and the fighter-scale image generator now has the series 5 G.I.JOE card added to the G.I.JOE layout (with an explosion obviously based on the new Hawk sprite’s shape).

Custom Sprites: Joe & Mac finally get fighter-sized custom sprites and their own gallery, but they’re not alone! It’s Karnovember, so the “Joe & Mac Returns” version of Karnov is there, too!

Mini-Logos: Guest pixel arist Sage Freehaven has sent more mini-logos to add! Since there’s now non-wrestling logos there, I made a main gallery for Sage Freehaven’s work and updated the original wrestling gallery. Also updated were:
Data East: Joe & Mac, Joe & Mac Returns
Compile: Compile’s logo

GFX Generators:
– added: Joe & Mac
– updated: Karnov, Sakura (MSH vs SF Sunburned palettes), Captain America (fixed/added U.S. Agent palettes)
