| Also known as bird's eye view, this is a viewpoint that has you looking down at the playfield. Top-down shooters usually scroll vertically (up and down instead of right and left), but not always. The viewpoint is mostly used in shooters (Commando, Ikari Warriors, Mercs, Gain Ground, Axelay and Gun.Smoke) and certain styles of action RPG's (Legend of Zelda and Golden Axe Warrior), but is sometimes used for beat 'em ups, like Capcom's Avenger. |
