| This 2005 Compilation features 29 of Taitos hits, including Space Invaders, one of the most influential video games of all time, and two of its sequels. Phoenix, originally by Amstar, was one of the best Invader-style games and is included as well. You'll also find three of the most legendary single screen and scrolling platformers in Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands and the New Zealand Story. Jungle Hunt, one of the first side-scrollers ever (with a bit of parallax scrolling no less), appears along with Rastan, Elevator Action, Thunderfox, Ninja Kids and the scroller/fighter hybrid called Gladiator. Shooting gallery games include the Uzi-riffic Operation Wolf, it's sequel Operation Thunderbolt, the submarine game Battle Shark and the sci-fi based Space Gun. Extras include flyer scans, a hints and tips section for each game, descriptions, controls and pretty much everything you need to know about the game. My favorite extras are the interviews with Taito game designers Tomohiro Nishikado (Space Invaders) & Fukio "MTJ" Mitsuji (Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands) in which both pioneers explain the origins of their most famous games and their philosophies in game design. | |
