Spider-Man: the Video Game (arcade)
200x100 GFX Company: Sega
Genre: Beat 'em up
Released: USA: 1991
From the game's JPN flyer
Jumping in the air, crawling on walls and clinging to the helicopter, the 3 comic book heroes and a heroine are pursuing Dr. DOOM, an incarnation of evil, by fully utilizing their ultranatural abilities.
From a city full of high-rise buildings, they proceed to Dr. DOOM's castle in pursuit of the stolen "SORCERER STONE" by boarding a helicopter. However, VENOM .... a formidable enemy, the "ARMORED FORTRESS," "FLAMING CAVE," and a final scene await you. Can you destroy the doctor, your ultimate enemy?

The game is a side-scrolling beat 'em up and the fighting engine finds its own spot between the post-1989 pure input (Final Fight) and contextual (Double Dragon, TMNT) styles. There are two buttons, attack and jump, and pressing both at once while on the ground delivers a crowd-clearing attack (at the cost of some health. Regular jump kicks are performed by pressing the jump button and releasing it before pressing the attack button, while forward air attack requires the player to hold the jump button while pressing attack before reaching the max height of the jump. At certain points in the game, the camera pulls back (thanks to the Sega System 32 hardware) and the game becomes a wall-crawling platformer (with a hint of Capcom's Strider).

Trivia time: Hawkeye and Namor were very active in the arcade beat 'em up scene in 1991, as they also appear in Data East's Captain America and the Avengers (were Namor's role is non-playable, but still helpful). The giant Namor sign in chapter 1 features the logo for his then-new comic series Namor. The book was being written and pencilled by the legendary John Byrne, whose art of Namor appears on the Japanese flyer for the game and even the pic on the in-game sign looks inspired by his style. In Chapter 4, after you fight (and are annoyed by) the Sandman, you'll enter a castle room filled with weapons and suits of armor. One of those weapons is a golden axe that will look familiar to Sega fans, especially if they've played The Return of Death Adder (another of Sega's System 32 games).
