River City Ransom (nes)
200x100 GFX Company: Technos
Genre: Beat 'em up
Released: USA: 1990
The term 'Cult Classic' is thrown around with little thought these days, but many beat-em-up fans agree that the term definitely applies to River City Ransom. This game is an English language localization of Technos' third Kunio-Kun game, Downtown Nekketsu Story. After making the most influential features in the beat-em-up genre with both Nekketsu Ko-ha Kunio-kun (localized into Renegade) and Double Dragon, Technos added RPG elements like character attributes, shops, in-game cutscenes and a less linear style of level layouts. Even the fighting engine is more advanced and allows you to carry weapons from screen-to-screen (which rarely happens even in arcade games) and knock weapons into enemies. This game also has one of the better localizations in NES history with both the sprites and the memorable dialogue. Even the gangs and their members were cleverly renamed to fit various themes. As weird as it is for one of the most ambitious and imaginative beat-em-ups to be on the NES, it shouldn't be a surprise that it's from Technos.
