Growl (arcade)
200x100 GFX Company: Taito
Genre: Beat 'em up
Released: USA: 1991 JPN: 1990
From the intro
In the early part of the 20th century, a group of evil poachers recklessly hunted animals nearly to the point of extinction.

Gen (over the phone): Hello... this is a ranger corps. What?!... Understand. We will not fail to defeat them!

(Jetgun and Doll enter the bar)
Jetgun (audio sample): Drop dead, you scum!
(Doll throws a grenade and blows up most of the bar)
Player character: You won't get away with this.
Unlike most useless rescued hostages in video games, freed animals return the favor as lions maul their captors, elephants stomp poachers to bits and cute baby jungle cats ferociously stampede the unsuspecting ankles of rotten nogoodniks with deadly results.

The character names on this page come from Taito's Genesis/Mega Drive port of the game. The names of the enemies, except for the final boss, appear in the manual. The storyline in the manual goes into further detail by saying that the game takes place in 1998 (ignoring the "early part of the 20th century" bit of the arcade and Genesis intro) and says that the action starts in Machanga, the name of both a district and town in Mozambique.
Player Characters:
Burn (Growl) Gen (Growl) Jack (Growl) Khan (Growl)

Start Screen Character Select Set off a gunpowder barrel and watch the chump chunks go flying all over the place. Growl lets you shoot amateur lion tamers with an assault rifle that hadn't been invented yet. She wears leather in the jungle and talks like Mr. T while climbing a moving train. That's hot. Even the birds pitch in an assist in the beatdowns.
Game also appears in:
Taito Legends 2 (PS2)
