Commando (arcade)
200x100 GFX Company: Capcom
Genre: Shooter, Run and gun
Released: USA: 1985 JPN: 1985
Commando is Capcom's earliest entry into the overhead run-and-gun genre. The game became one of the most influential in the game type. Super Joe goes on to be a popular name as he's said to be the hero in the arcade version of Bionic Commando and the Speed Rumbler, even if he barely looks the same in either one. This game eventually became a series which includes Mercs and Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 (for the X-Box 360 Live). If sources (as in Wikipedia) are right, the upcoing Bionic Commando revival will reveal that Super Joe and Joe Gibson from Mercs are one and the same. Considering that both share the same first name, hair color and uniform color, it's probably one of the most logical gaming retcons ever.
