Shake a hand, shake a hand, because it’s that time of year again! I can’t afford to give out toys to all of my friends, so I make an update based on my favorite toys (mostly from the 80s), including toys based on preexisting licenses. This year, G.I.JOE and Masters of the Universe made some strong comebacks, even if some were ridiculously hard to find on store shelves. That’s enough from me, go open your presents!

G.I.JOE: Clutch (v.1 toy, v.1 comic, v.2 tan recolor)
Street Fighter: Chun-Li, Ken and M.Bison (all G.I.JOE figure v.1, made from parts of preexisting Joe and Cobra bodies with new heads)
Masters of the Universe: Zodac (last figure needed for original line-up of figures), Hordak (highly-requested)
Thundercats: Tygra (finishing the original crew of adult Thundercats who weren’t ghosts, sorry Jaga)

All new sprites added to the main image generator!

Whatever it is that you’re celebrating this time of year, I hope it’s a great time for you!

BTW: this WON’T be the last site update for the year… stay tuned…

First things first, if you’re reading this on the site’s main menu, your eyes aren’t deceiving you, the layout’s slightly different. I’ve moved the header, added some new header images (with many more to come) and rearranged a few other things, but I’m not done yet. Please expect more main menu mutations in the near future.

Toybox/ToyBoss: “Wait, there’s a toy section on this site?” Yeah, a small toy section was made for the site back when the game-related figures I wanted were in my ramen-life price range. That was an entire era of G.I. JOE figures ago (the Joe vs. Cobra/Spy Troops/Valor vs. Venom style that most of the customs are in). This was originally going to be part of the Karnovember update, but I kept wanting to make sure it debuted with new things, like new pics of the G.I.JOE Radd Spencer and Rolento customs, because I didn’t have a camera when I finished the last details on the figures and kept forgetting to take shots with the new camera. I also added some other quick pics, including a couple of Marvel beat ’em up and side-scroller teams that I’ve completed in Marvel Legends scale. I’ve got ideas for better photo set-ups in the future, so just know that I didn’t revive this part of the site just to let it rot again.

Game Index: added Spider-Man (arcade)

Custom Sprites:
Masters of the Universe: Mer-Man and Catra (Filmation designs)
G.I. JOE: Hawk (versions 1 and 2)
Horror: because it’s Friday the 13th, Jason has an updated version of the Pt. III outfit/Pt. VII Axe kill pose (seen on the NES cart box). The shading is now closer to the version seen in the Horror 3 vs. 3 print. I also condensed the Friday the 13th section so Jason and his mother have sub-galleries with their older sprites.

As usual, all the new custom sprites have been added to the image generators, and the fighter-scale image generator now has the series 5 G.I.JOE card added to the G.I.JOE layout (with an explosion obviously based on the new Hawk sprite’s shape).

Custom Sprites: Roxy and Stormer make mischief on the outrageously new Jem gallery page, a new scratch-made sprite of Roadblock (v.1) joins the G.I.JOE page, Man-at-Arms finally appears on the Masters of the Universe page and Buttons McBoomBoom tries to steal the show on the Toys ‘n Toons hub page.

All of this has been added to the GFX Generator, where you’ll find a new “2018 Deadpool” option for the Marvel Legends box and (finally) word balloon options for the Kenner Super Powers tribute!

Keep an eye out for this year’s “Unfinished Business” update, which will drop before 2018 comes to a close.
“Why, is there going to be something special about it?”

There’s your answer.

Time for toys and time for cheer!

Custom Sprites
G.I. JOE: Stalker, Duke (new pose), Storm Shadow, Zarana
Masters of the Universe: She-Ra, Trap Jaw, Stratos
Toys and Cartoons: Aja and Shana (Jem), Matt Trakker (M.A.S.K.)

All these new sprites have been added to the main graphic generator, along with the new G.I. JOE 128×192 pixel layout used to display some of the new G.I.JOE sprites up there. It replaces the cruddy, shorter version I did a long time ago. I’ll be adding more versions of that card in the near future.

Wherever you and whatever you celebrate, I hope you have a happy one!

What started as a Marvel vs. Capcom-themed update turned into a free-for-all crossover, causing me to add more updates with Tekken on Wednesday and SNK on Thursday. It ends tonight with Mortal Kombat and DC Comics facing off again!

And since I said tonight’s the night, that’s all for these crossover, I – – hold up, wait a minute… I can feel it now. A week of having whole universes invading my updates have sharpened my senses a little. Here comes – –

Ha! Saw you comin’ this time! It’s the last night for this theme, so just step on out now.

Oh, snap, Duke must’ve heard there was a Street Fighter crossover and wanted in again after the Street Fighter x G.I.JOE series. Rash and Zitz from Battletoads seem to be hungry for crossovers again, too, after Rash got a taste of Killer Instinct. Okay, you’re in, too. Here’s all the update details:

Custom Sprite galleries updated or added-
Mortal Kombat: new, with remakes of the MK2 versions of Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kitana, Jade and Noob Saibot
DC Comics: Black Canary (new pose), Black Manta, and Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman
GI JOE: Duke (v.1)
Rareware: Zitz and Rash
portrait: SFA3 Vs. Batman portrait

All newness has been added to the main GFX Generator, where you can make your own fake screenshots, too!

Unfortunately, I can’t fit all of these names into the post title. Seeing as how this won’t be the last time this crap happens, it’s going to need a name.

Crossup Beatdown. That’ll work. From this day forward, any time this sort of crossover madness happens on this site (and it will), that’s the name I’ll use. This edition of Crossup Beatdown is over, but beware, because you never know when it’ll happen again. However, if you checked out every update as they happened, your multi-universal senses may have sharped a bit, as have mine. We’re one with many cosmoses now, and that’s a pretty cool deal if you think about it.

Thanks for stopping by and don’t forget that there’s a new X-Men print in the shop!

You know, I think you’ve been a really good group of girls and boys this year, so I think I’ll let you open your gifts early this time. No corduroy pants and hats this year, it’s all toys!

Toys and Cartoons: Teela, Beast Man, Panthro, Rom: Spaceknight, Megatron, Kimber Benton
G.I. JOE: Snake-Eyes (figure 1), Cobra Commander, Destro, Cobra Trooper
DC Comics: Supergirl, Martian Manhunter (the sprite seen in the JLA pixel art poster)
Marvel Comics: Doctor Doom (Secret Wars ’84 outfit)

All those sprites are also in the new, main GFX Generator, along with two new toy card tributes and a new MotU font:

As always, many of the sprites, especially the Cobra Trooper, have extra palettes in the GFX Generator that aren’t seen in the main custom sprite galleires. After all, there’s no such thing as having too many Cobra Troopers!

(edit)
Elsewhere…

Arcade Quartermaster is getting 2017 started early with a group of new shrines: Star Wars arcade (hey, Star Wars toys are also a favorite), Outfoxies, Narc and Outrun!

Thanks for the stopping by and I hope you have a good time, no matter which holidays you celebrate!

Today is the eighth month’s ninth day, which mean this site celebrates 1989, the greatest year in video game history*!

This site even has a sub-section dedicated to the year for reasons you’ll see mentioned there. Then again, you’ll probably figure out why once you see all the stuff I’m celebrating (and there’s still a lot left out). Everything in this update is linked to that magical year when many of this site’s favorite games, series, consoles and more debuted. Unfortunately, there’s so much stuff that I couldn’t even fit it into 3 screenshots, so, as a first, the sprite preview is a video!

Custom Sprites:
Capcom: Quick Man added to Mega Man section.
– – Final Fight: two new scratch-made Cody sprites!
– – Strider (new separate section): (a new Tom Pooh sprite (and redone colors on the hand-up pose) in the Strider section

Nintendo: Tatanga (Super Mario Land)

Sega: scratch-made E-SWAT’s police ICE armor and enemy unknown/File 96 enemies
– – Golden Axe: resprited Tyris Flare fight stance
– – Shinobi: new scratch-made Pink Dragon and redone Kasumi sprites

Sunsoft: Tuff Turf’s heroes and lady added.

Technos: new standing sprites for Kunio, Riki, Hasebe, Alex and Ryan

Games(other): Prince of Persia (original) added.

DC Comics: the Joker in the 1989 NES Batman stance
Music: new gallery starts with new Chuck D (Public Enemy) sprite and older sprites and sprite edits.
Toys ‘n Toons: Marge, Lisa and Bart Simpson. The Simpsons cartoon started in 1989!
G.I. JOE: Snake-Eyes in his version 3 (1989) outfit
TMNT: Krang (in his standing pose from the 1989 beat ’em up)

Mini-Logos: Prince of Persia (Jordan Mechner), Public Enemy (Music) and the Simpsons (Television) added.

The new custom sprites and mini-logos have been added to the GFX Generators.

My apologies to any fans of 1989 games who were left out, like Mendel Palace/Quinty, Double Dragon 2(NES), Astyanax, Crime City, and dozens more. There are too many good 1989 games to celebrate and many of my older sprites needed to be redone. Let me know about your favorite 1989 games and characters in the comment section!

* – 1989 being the greatest game year is hyperbole mostly for fun, but also designed to drive disagreement-induced hits, but at least this website admits it.

The first anniversary update was all gaming characters, but now it’s time give a few comic and toy license characters some love!

Custom Sprites:
DC Comics: Black Canary (an early version was seen in the site promo videos)
Marvel Comics: a new Wasp sprite. Don’t worry, I’ll make more outfits for her later!
TMNT: Shredder (same pose as the 2013 sprite, but redrawn & resprited to look much better)
G.I.JOE: Snake-Eyes and Scarlett. BTW: an early version of Scarlett’s sprite was in the unannounced new banner displayed only on July 4th this year.

All sprites were added to the aforementioned GFX Generators (the old GroupShot and Vs generators). Wasp’s new sprite has slightly different colors than her 2011-2012 sprites, but I remade all her old palettes, because Jan’s gotta switch things up. Snake-Eyes’ new sprite also has multiple palettes.

Also: that Chun-Li pic I drew last month is now in the prints section of the site’s Shop page!

So we saw video game heroes yesterday and 80s nostalgia today, but things take a turn for the sinister tomorrow with an all-villain update!

Seeing as how it’s Christmas Eve, I thought it’d be a great time for an update with toy sprites!

New sprites of Evil-Lyn, Scarlett, He-Man, Jem, Lion-O, Grunt, and Faker have been added to the Toys and Cartoon and G.I.JOE galleries, along with the GFX Generators (where you’ll see even more palettes for Scarlett and Grunt). I also fixed the sprite of G.I.JOE’s “Flash” Gambello, because he was far too short.

BTW: Steelheart and Cyborg were going to be part of this, repping SilverHawks and Super Powers respectively, but I used them in the Cyber Week updates so the site wouldn’t be going so long without updates. Don’t worry, you won’t have to wait until next Christmas to get more toy-related sprites here…

the Night City Assault beat ’em up Kickstarter only has a few days and is halfway to its goal, so check out the campaign, try out the playable demo and help it out if you can!

Merry Christmas!

Today marks 15 years of this site’s existence on the outskirts of the internet! Most of today’s update centers on sprites that I wanted to redo from scratch, but there’s also a new ScrollBoss character (you’ll see more from her in future updates) and sprites based on the games of late, great Iwata-san.

Custom Sprites
HAL Laboratory: Lolo and Lala (Eggerland series) kick off the new gallery.
Nintendo: Balloon Fighter added.
Sega: a new scratch-made Shiva (Streets of Rage series) sprite added.
DC: Green Lantern Hal Jordan
G.I.JOE: the Baroness
Illmosis Network: The new gallery starts with “V” but my other characters will be added later.

Mini-logos
Nintendo: Balloon Fight

All of those sprites were added to the GFX Generators

I’m still a bit worn out from the past few weeks and the yesterday’s great convention, so I couldn’t write the big, detailed “Thank You” post that I wanted to make yet, but will get that together this week. For now, I’d just like to thank everyone who visits the site. You’re one of the biggest factors that kept me going through that whole time. ScrollBoss has been here since the days when these older games were looked down upon by a lot of people and I’ve tried to let this place be a lighthouse for anyone looking for place to appreciate older action games and pixel art. I still have a lot of new things on the way for this site, so I hope you keep visiting every once in a while!
